Ive recently come across this charity that rescue French horses from the slaughter house, and in Sep/Oct I will be in the position to afford and have the time for a horse and after a discussion with my mum she said she would be very interested in enquiring about a horse from that site(seriously shocked!) But! I wanted to know if anybody has a rough idea of how much it would be to transport a horse from France to the UK? And how long would quarantine be and vet bills?

Its actually cheaper than you realise, my horse coming from Holland with John Parker international is costing me £375+vat.
All they need is health papers that have to be done by a ministry vet. Obviously update vaccs aswell. Real easy from france,no quarantine or anything from the EU.
It would all depend on mileage etc, but my miniature stallion has just gone the other way - to Belgium. There was no quarantine, just a compulsory veterinary health check and then off he went on his travels. We used a well known carrier from Wales and he arrived fit and well. Now obviously he was a mini, but the whole deal door to door with vet and docs was 250 euros - about £230. Mr Jones did all of it. The horse left, the horse arrived - simples! as the Meercat ad says!!! email me if you need his details - even if just for a quote. He has a really good reputation and was cheaper than many of the others that I contacted.Owen Jones -http://www.nebostud.com/transpor.htm

Wow that's a lot cheaper than I anticapted! All the horses are vaccinated, wormed and vet checked prior to travelling while syill in France so that makes its easier. Simples! I love that Meerkat!
Is Mr Jones from Hurn Bridge?
Rachel please be careful. I'm sure there was some publicity last year about a so-called charity bringing french "rescue" horses to the UK and they aren't really rescue horses at all. They go round buying up cheap horses direct from the farmers and sell them at a profit to the Brits, who like to to think they're rescuing something.
wouldnt trust none of them rescue places abroard. Money making scam if you ask me! Check out the equine section site, asking £1000 euros for some old, broken down, skinny mare. Its insanity!
Well call me insane then. The horses are priced per kilo of meat they produce so the fatter the horse the more it costs. And I've always said if I get another dog or cat I'd get a rescue, and its now the same with horses.
I'm going to ingnore this post now as I fear I will just be critised for any of my actions, if you look on the website there are plenty of stories of horses that have been re-homed or unfortunatly lost, I have messaged the mangers of the site and they have been very helpful and not a hint of a scam or anything like that, and they have warned me about the thorougher examination of potentional homes.

There is an interesting article in the current issue of "Horse" magazine about these so-called "rescue centres". It would appear that most of them are actually unscrupulous dealers . . . best to avoid . . . .
if its just from france you find lynette luck to be the best and cheapest from cornwall i have dealt with them hundreds of times http://www.equinefreight.co.uk/ they are brilliantly priced compared to others for transporting in the uk too, any other country then owen jones of the nebo stud is your man hes taking a stallion and mare ive sold out to sweden for me the end of this month he collects them takes them back to his yard until they leave the country and he does all the paper work as do the lucks transport http://www.nebostud.com/transpor.htm
Helpful post for me thanks, I was also interested in knowing how much to transport horses to France (rather than the oppsoite way) as i expected it to be about £500 each, and I have 5 of them, so that is better than anticipated
france isnt that expensive, for the 2 to go from new forest to nebo in wales they keep them there and do all the paper work then take them both to sweden is £380 dont think anyone not even johnny can get near that price
Nebo was recommended to me by several "mini" friends, and is well known and used throughout Europe within the Mini world. I did not get to choose who took my boy, so I was worried!!!!
They arrived on time, took all of his "luggage" and were very sensitive to the fact that I was pretty upset. Hard to say "goodbye" to the little man. I only sold him as I am getting old and falling to bits!!! The new owners were very pleased with how he was on arrival, so I can only speak as I find!!!
If you want to give a rescued horse a home why not contact the charities in this country? I know it's hard to think of horses going for slaughter but many of them are being sent for a reason.
Did anyone read in the Sunday mail about the over breeding of Race horses/foals that are being sent to slaughter? Whats up with getting horse/pony from this country? In France its normal 2 eat horse meat just like we eat Cows,pigs,lamb,fish... I would not eat horse but aslong as its been kept in good conditions like any animal I dont mind.
