I have a 1 year old Clydesdale with OCD a growth problem which courses his joints in his legs to swell with fluid, because or the rich grass it is bad at the moment and I dont want to put him on bute if I can help it as he will need a lot of anti inflammatory over the next 3 years and wondered what has worked for you. We are moving him to a poor grazing but need a shelter put up first which will help him but that is to slow and needs something now to reduce the swelling before it does him any permanent damage.

I think MSM is a natural anti inflammatory, but if your vet has advised you to use bute I think you would be wise to do so.

I have used bute on him he has had 2 courses of bute lately but for such a young horse and with the side effects of bute i am looking for a good alterative as he is going to need an anti inflammatory most of the time for the next 3 years the stronger the better what has worked for you.( the vet sees him regular at the mow monthly)

What about natural bute - like no more bute or bute X. Have used that. I have used that in the past.

And yes also agree MSN is an antiinflammatory.

what about Arnica - google it and see if it is what would apply to you.

Good luck

Turmeric is also a natural herbal anti-inflammatory.

If your worried about long term use of bute why not ask you vet about danolin. Its a anti-inflammatory & painkiller, but gentler on the gut and better for long term use.

I have a mini who had bone spavins and arthiritis as a 18 months old, he quickly devloped an intolerance to bute and so had danolin instead. He then at age 3 got OCD in his shoulder..

Due to all his problems he isn't 100% sound.. but happy kicking it in the field and being a spoilted 'large dog'.. he is stabled in winter and gets danolin in the winter to keep him going and i think he'll have to be on the painkillers every winter for the rest of his life to keep him comfortable. Vets agree this and danolin is his best option there as its better for long term use.

Oh and he's 7yrs old old now.. and still going strong when he wants to... (ie kicks, runs off and generally being pest! lol) but he's happy and carefree... he'll be back in his danolin this winter but i think that is something that isn't going to change and vets have said that..

Another good thing that helps is a good joint supplement... Dinki gets naf 5* superflex all year round and it does make a big difference to him.

Hi i have spoken with NAF and they have recommend feeding NAF Superflex MSM and NAF D-Tox i have also contacted no bute and they have recommended to use a double dose when he is bad and normal dose after to maintane him. i will speak to my vet about danolin. at the moment i have him on no bute but like the sound of the NAF products as they are designed to help there joints and support healthy growth were as the no bute just reduces swelling thank you for your advice hopfully one of these will suite him and save him having bute and keep him pain free ruth
