EDUARD

35798, Tiger I Initial Production. 1/35th-scale photo-etched brass for DML kit. Price: $24.95 USD.

It is difficult to believe that DML’s ground-breaking Tiger I Initial Production kit can still benefit from an after-market etched brass set. But, Eduard is betting that it can, if this set is any indicator.

Eduard has seen fit to provide engine deck grill screens (which DML did not include in the kit for reasons that are no longer valid). However, they do not have the folded-down edges the parts warrant (which DML did figure out how to do in their subsequent Tiger I kits). Other major items include new front mud flaps with scale-thickness folded edges on the base parts and three different tread plate patterns to laminate on top. These last items are in the DML kit, so it’s puzzling as to why Eduard repeats them. It would have been just as well if they provided the base parts and instructed the modeler to laminate the DML etched parts over them. But I digress…

New rear mud flaps are provided, again repeating what is included by DML in the etched parts in their kit. The remaining parts include the usual very easy-to-use one-piece tool clamps, as well as jack and gun tube bore swab staff holders. The jack block gets new brackets, lifting handle and reinforcement strips, while there are parts for the tail station-keeping lamp and the Bosch head-lamp. Some turret interior bits are provided including an MP38/40 rack, internal gun travel lock, a few equipment racks and some other details. The engine compartment gets detailed plates for the radiator faces, while the Pz.Kpfw.III-type stowage bins also get some detail bits in the form of mounting brackets and clasps for the lids. There are no parts for the other types of bins in the kit.

Altogether this is a nice set, but is probably over-kill considering the kit it’s aimed at.

Recommended.
