From the end of the Second World War until the early 1980s, the US did not operate any sort of wheeled AFV in any significant numbers, except for the limited-use V-100 Commando armored car. The advent of the USMC’s LAV-25 series changed all of that; currently it has evolved into the Stryker system. The LAV itself has not been ignored by manufacturers, even if the actual renditions have been less than stellar. It would appear however, that the recent Trumpeter release has “got it right”.
Eduard has now brought out a set to detail the basic LAV-25 version for the Trumpeter kit. Beginning with the upper hull/superstructure, there are screens for all of the engine compartment intake and exhaust grills as well as protective screens and shields for the exhaust muffler and its pipe. Head-lamp and rear-view mirror mounts, storage brackets of various types and tie-down straps are also provided, as is a complete driver’s external wind-shield to include wiper blades and clear film for the glass. There are also periscope guards and various types of handles for the different hatch lids and doors. Different styles of racks and straps are also given for the jerry cans, while there are clamps and brackets for the various pioneer tools. Finally, there is a wire cutter and bracket to protect the driver.
The turret receives screens for the bustle storage rack as well as retaining straps. There are also racks for ammunition boxes, wire cutters and brackets, a new perforated flash suppressor for the 25mm gun and caps with chains for the smoke grenade launch tubes. The hatch lids get some details in the way of levers and locking handles.
