Item #501, Grunddeckung-Ground Cover. Natural birch-seed leaf material for diorama use. Price: $5.00 USD, plus $4.75 for Priority Mail shipping within the USA; prices similar for international orders.

One of the biggest problems facing diorama, figure and vignette modelers is the depiction of natural items in “scale”. In the old days, kitchen spices were the norm when it came to portraying such things as dried vegetation and fallen leaves; of course, they still have their uses. But since “looks” are everything, modelers have always wanted some way to depict an actual “fallen leaf”. To the rescue, as she sometimes does, comes Mother Nature.

Birch-seed has tiny components that look, for all the world, like three-pointed leaves. The material is a natural brownish-tan color and has an uncanny resemblance to scale fallen leaves. It is virtually ready to use and simply needs to be properly fixed to a given area of a base. While available “in nature”, not everyone can easily find this material, so some after-market manufacturers do the leg-work and package it up for modelers. This means that time spent hunting for it can be better spent working on a model; all the modeler has to do is purchase some and open a bag, something that’s easily done.

The product comes in a small re-sealable plastic zip-lock bag, about three-by-four inches in size. It appears to contain enough material to cover most of an 8 x 10-inch area if used wisely. However, I can’t see that anyone would only cover a base completely in fallen leaves, so the material given should last for several projects. So, I’d say that value for money is certainly there. However, when one adds shipping, the value becomes less. That’s why I’d suggest ordering more than one pack of this item at a time, or piggy-backing this item onto another from this manufacturer; then it makes more economic sense.

So, again, Ausfwerks has provided a simple, easy-to-use, time saving product. Not bad, eh?

Recommended.
