BISON DECALS
BD-35095, French 2eme D.B. Shermans (2). 1/35th-scale water-slide decals with instructions.
Partnered with their other new release allowing the modeler to replicate the very colorfully-marked Shermans used by the Free French, Bison has released this second set for tanks of the 2eme Division Blindée, or 2nd Armored Division. This sheet provides for a single M4A1(75), an M4A3(76) with a variation and an M4(105). So, it does not duplicate the types seen on the other sheet. This means that only three tanks can be modeled, since the M4A3(76) choices use some of the same markings. The markings are as follows and can be viewed by following this link:
http://www.angelfire.com/pro/bison/35095.html
M4A1, 'Meknes II', 12eme Cuir.
M4(105), 'La Moskowa', 501eme RCC.
M4A3(76), 'Champagne',12eme RCA.
M4A3(76), 'Flandres', 12eme RCA.
Again, the tanks are very colorfully-marked with names, Tac numbers and divisional insignia. Other items include bridging classification circles, French registration plates (matricules), small tricolor flags, shipping labels and Allied aerial recognition stars. Kits are available for the M4A1 and M4A3 from various manufacturers, while the M4(105) will have to be kit-bashed or converted using an after-market item. In that regard, the modeler will have to search for a conversion. The manufacturer has also noted an irregularity on the instructions. 'Moskowa' is described as an M4A3 (105) Sherman, but it is actually an M4(105). In addition, I noted that the date for the employment of Champagne, listed as July 1944 is far too early. Not even the US Army had M4A3(76) tanks at the time. The references cited in the instructions say September of 44, a much more plausible date. None of this effects the usefulness of what the manufacturer provides.
The designs are printed in Russia by Begemot. Their quality has been, and continues to be, excellent. Edges are crisp, colors are well-saturated, and registration is extremely good. Carrier film is thin, matte and cropped close to the designs edges. The instructions cover one side of an 8 x 11.5-inch sheet of paper and are in monotone. The modeler is given a web address to down-load and print a color version, but what is supplied is more than adequate to the task. In addition to placement and color notes, small details unique to the individual tank, such as stowage or track types are also noted. In order to help with design placement, a map is given, which cross-references the designs with an alpha-numeric call-out.
So, more colorful markings are on hand, allowing fans of the Free French units, as well as normal Shermanaholics to try something different.
Highly recommended.
