I tend to be a little dylecix about gears, but I believe the generator gear rotates conterclockwise as viewed from the right, or cam side of the engine. 12v Sportster and Big Twin generators are physically intechangeable. I used a 12V Sportster generator in a '69 Shovel without changing rectifiers for several years, but could not guarantee they are 100% identical. They looked the same and worked the same, which was good enough for me. Oddly, the Shovel rode much better in the dirt after I put the Sportster generator in.
