I searched the tech board here about removing rust from chrome and came up with all sorts of good ideas, most involving liquids with acid in them. More is better, so I brushed some muriatic acid on a chrome wheel rim with rust spots on it. Figured how can I go wrong...it's special acid that I used to clean tile grout that won't burn your skin if you stick your fingers in it. The rust is gone but now the chrome has hazy blotches on it that won't polish out with a tube of scratch remover I have. Will this polish off with rubbing compound or something, or did I remove the outer layer of chrome?

The funny part was when it tried some Brasso on it before I rinsed the acid off and created smelly chemical smoke...
