ratchet top tranny questions

hey guys, i am working on a 1957 ironhead which had the tranny chopped off and mated to a 1965 4 speed ratchet top. it has a 3" open BDL drive. i am having trouble with the clutch shell crawling out with the releasing disk when i pull the clutch lever (which was the customer's complaint, along with a main seal leak). what this affects is that when i put the bike in gear the bike will creep forward and gets alot worse when i rev the engine even after adjusting the clutch adjusting screw/clutch cable yatta yatta yatta. i took the tranny off to replace all the seals and found that one of the clutch hub's fingers had been broken and half ass welded back on. the tranny had solid roller bearings intalled vs "caged style" bearings. i went ahead and replaced the clutch hub with another one which was given to me by the customer for our "parts stash". it just happened to have the "caged style" bearings installed on it so i went ahead and slapped that on. i put everything back together, turned the bike on and observed the clutch shell as i pulled the clutch lever several times. still does the same crap. it seems that the clutch shell crawling out with the clutch disks doesn't allow the clutch to fully disengage. i took off the clutch again and saw that the bearing plate doesn't retain the clutch shell in anyway like the orignal one that came with the tranny did. ok, so i took off the bearing plate and put the original bearing plate back along with 3 new retaining springs and a couple more for good measure. put it all back, turned the bike on.....same crap!! i'm out of bullets so my questions are as follows:

solid roller bearings are better than caged bearings right?

is the bearing plate supposed to retain the clutch shell?

what would cause the clutch shell to crawl out with the releasing disk when i pull the clutch?
