Hey guys my 85 FXR went to shit last night. I had just filled up with gas (of course) fired her up and had a very loud and nasty backfire and a sound like something broke in the front rocker box. It did start and it idled good enough that I was able to make it 1/4 mile to the walmart lot. I'm going back to get her this afternoon. I think the valve might have dropped and smacked the piston. She only has 40k for miles but I think the previous owner just ran the shit out of her and did zero maintenance. He was more concerned with chrome apparently as I have a ton of the crap on a shelf that I have taken off. Anyhow Im looking at a rebuild or purchasing another fresh motor from J&P. The J&P mill is the stock 80" black wrinkle finish and is going for about $4800. S&S has a big bore upper end kit for about $3500. Or I can have a local shop do it but I have no idea what it will cost.
I'm thinking about picking up the stock motor and just go completely through the bike with a new wiring harness etc. I have wanted to chop her to have the same stance as the bike in Harley and the Marlboro man. I don't want a clone just really like the stance of the bike. Also thought about just parking her and picking up another bike (can never have too many)and saving her for later. Anyhow just looking for a bit of input on which way to go.
