my '91 softail has two gas caps on the fatbobs. The left side cap is a ratching left hand thread cap. The right cap doesn't ratchet. I've had the bike since new and replaced 5 left caps. I finally replaced the right cap, not that anything was wrong with it, it just looked old and scratched up next to the left cap. So when no. 5 started rattling and driving me crazy. I did this. Screw the cap on lightly stop before it ratchets, then I marked the cap next to the speedometer with a sharpy. I then removed the cap and drilled a tiny hole thru the side where you grip the cap (so your going in a 90 to how the cap normally sits). I then took a small long sheetmetal screw I found and screwed it into the cap. No one notices the little screw and it's been like that for years and doesn't rattle. Just don't strong arm the cap when you put it on.
