...I think it's important to have a skid plate, but that's just me. But the engine cases on a Harley are the most valuable part of the whole drive train. Not necessarily bcuz of replacement cost but they hold important matching numbers associated with your VIN.

It may never happen that you come across a bump or a pothole big enough for you to bottom out and damage them, but at the very least you'll have road spray consistently working on sanding them down. So in all likelyhood, you are right that some people want the maximum "cool" factor and don't care as much about preserving their valuables.
