...when you apply them, some plastic is displaced by the rivet depression and has a tendency to raise up just enough so that when the paint is wet polished with micro mesh, it sometimes catches the rivets and exposes the silver base coat. I like the fact that it comes out unevenly.

Turns out semi-random form is more difficult to create that symmetrical. The key for me is to make the weathering look as if it occurred naturally rather than applied intentionally.
