Desperately trying to get my Corsair Mojo back, I pulled this project out and went back to work on it. The lighting here at home isn't good enough to finish my 72nd scale Corsairs, but its just barely good enough to work on this in the sun room.

Here's the underside, showing the mods done to the intercooler flap:

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

The laminated styrene "plug" to add continuity to the fuselage "Dishpan" area:

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Here is the spliced together, 360-degree "Wrap Around" cowl flap installation:

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

What may or may not become 4-piece tail wheel doors:
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

The MK II Rudder Antenna Post. Also note the panel lines added for the life raft (?) compartment, found on roughly the first 100 Corsairs built, including the one dredged from Lake Michigan:
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

The Forward Antenna Post installation and Fuselage Tank Fuel Filler Cap:
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

And finally an overall shot. Finished model will be closed canopy, so the cockpit is just the stock parts, nothing more. The canopy frames are painted black on the insides. Boy, That was Fun.

Hope you Likee. Thanks for Shopping!!

... Is she gonna have wing walkways? wink.gif

The mother of all Corsairs. Nice to see one being built.

[linked image] We stole the eagle from the Air Force, the anchor from the Navy, and the rope from the Army.
On the seventh day while God rested, we overran his perimeter, stole the globe, and we've been running the whole show ever since.

You know it, Baby!!

December 5 2011, 3:41 PM

And it will be an orgy of Tamiya tape, x-acto blades and Model Master Flat Black, too!! The basement will be covered in a haze of black fog from all the airbrushing, ha ha.

I'll take pictures of all that just for you, LOL

Nice to see that you're back in the GNW, just in time for the wet (kinda this year) winter! Hope to see the latest at an upcoming club meeting!

Ah, The older sibling

December 6 2011, 3:12 PM

Another one for the Corsair Family. Simple conversion and yet different enough.

How many different Corsair variants are you up to now?

Looking good so far.

Hi Michael,

December 6 2011, 4:44 PM

'Fraid i'm still stuck in the "First Generation" Corsair mind set. Here's a breakdown:

1) 1/72nd Brewster F3A-1: Finished (Came back from the dead)
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

2) 1/48th Vought F4U-2: Finished (could stand to be re-photographed however)
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

3) 1/72nd Vought F4U-1A: Close to being done (seat belts; god i hate doing those. Some other minot stuff in the cockpit, then gear doors, antenna, done.)
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

4) 1/72nd Vought F4U-1D: in the weathering stage (doing the worn spot welds, then i gotta do the exhaust satin on the belly- Yuk!)
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

5) 1/72nd Goodyear (?) FG-1D, one of 4 Iraq Corsair Projects: windscreen blending phase; after that elevator trim tabs. Gonna be "The Mad Cossack" off the Barracudacals sheet. Oh, i also f-ed up the sleeves for the gun barrels so i have to re-install some new ones. D'OH!!
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

6) 1/72nd Vought F4U-2, another Iraqi Corsair: Need to build that little generator cooling intake; then tailplanes, elevators, and tabs, and windscreen.
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

7) 1/72nd Goodyear FG-1: wings done; fuselage not assembled yet. It'll be the very first Goodyear Corsair. Three tone with insignia in 6 places.

8) 1/72nd-1D: Mfg. TBD; Markings TBD but most likely USS WASP or FRANKLIN

9) 1/48th Vought F4U-1, 02153: building the pushrods for the elevator tabs now, then will come the windscreen.
[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

So: 2 done, one almost done, one pretty close to done, two close to primer/paint, two.... not even close. i work on one till i hit a roadblock and get frustrated, then move to the next one.

I'm considering another 48th scale Birdcage in Gloss Sea Blue. Partly cause you never see them, partly cause it would cover all three paint scheme variations of -1 Corsair.

Corsair Madness continues.....Sure, i have no focus but at least i have a theme.

Quite a List

December 6 2011, 6:08 PM

"The list is long, but distinguished" as the joke goes. Your list is similar to mine:

F4U-1 (EARLY & LATE)
F4U-1 WITH P&W R-4360
F4U-1A
F4U-1WM
FG-1A WITH BUBBLE CANOPY
F4U-2
XF4U-3A, -3B
F4U-1C
F4U-1D
F4U-1D TWO SEATER
F4U-4, -4P
F4U-5, -5N, -5P
AU-1
XF2G-1 WITH -1A CANOPY
F2G-1, -2

All in 1/48th scale.

Thanks for the offer

December 7 2011, 11:01 AM

I need to do an inventory and see how it compares to my variant list. I know I have a couple of Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1/2s, -1As, -1Ds, also one each of the Hobbycraft kits (bought before the Tamiya kits came out), an Arii -1A I started to superdetail ages ago, the Minicraft/Academy -4, Hasegawa -4, -5, and AU-1.

It's funny, my wife asked me why I have so many kits of the same plane. I said they are different and the ones in the same boxes will be modified to be a little different. Of course, she can't see the difference between the PBJ-1, JD-1, JM-1, and BD-1. At least she supports my hobby.

Hasegawa Vs. Heller F4U-4/-7 Front End

December 9 2011, 1:44 PM

Hey which company do you think did a better job at the -4 nose bowl, with the oil cooler inlet??

Is the Academy -4 even worth considering (cowling only)?

Here is a pic of my Academy/Minicraft F4U-4

December 9 2011, 9:51 PM

It is not the best angle, but it shows the scoop. IMO it has a bigger opening than the Hase -4 and is closer to the correct shape, though not right either. I don't have the Heller kit to offer an opinion on that one.

Thanks Michael!!

December 16 2011, 9:54 PM

i was wondering because i have a Hasegawa -4 i'd like to build as an early version, and i was wondering what sort of demand would exist for an improved cowling to replace that found in the kit; i'd heard stories from some quarters that the Heller -7 nose bowl was good, but like you i haven't seen it.

Looking good, Dave.

Glad you're back in the US.

My only comment is that your light source seems kind of crazy. Are you using mixed light sources, such as part tungsten and part CFL, or daylight? I ask because there seems to all sorts of colors going on in the background.

Looking forward to seeing this one finished.

Happy Modelling! Roy

Lighting (or more accurately lack thereof)

December 9 2011, 1:39 PM

Hi Roy,

This isn't how i'd prefer to illuminate my work. i simply threw down a piece of pistachio-coloured construction paper, and the lighting is from the overhead lamps on the ceiling, which i THINK are incandescent. I dialed up the exposure and dialed back the contrast and saturation in iPhoto afterwards, since the pics were seriously dark when i first saw them.

The shots were mostly taken in the daytime, so indirect lighting coming in (it is the sun room after all) from the outside also played into things.

Working on the elevator trim tab pushrods now. i really really hate this part.
