A few weeks ago I asked some Questions about this kit, Go a reply, and proceeded with looking up more pictures and information. I did not like the kits bridge arrangement the big height finder dishes the fore mast looks, this and that around the model. And a few extra parts around. Off I went. besides the bridge I have added a lattice tower to the after structure, two new cranes an SPS48 radar, copied from my USS Virginia CG. Here are a few shots of the changes I have made so far.
Hope you like it, I've posted in Ship Chat also.
Comments welcome.. and yes there will be some artistic license as well.
On a couple of points if you could. the loction of the signals ( bridge) for the signal flags? I was going to put up the Albany's Call sign, but am not sure of the down side for the flags. and maybe could tell me what the crane like structures are just forward of the bridge and forward of the after deck structure. Possible missle handling cranes for loading and unloading from storage?
Thanks for looking,
One of my plans, and I know the Albany was decommished before the ciws and Harpoon deployments, but as she sits. she look under armed. And I may fringe on history a little the this and my USS Long Beach also
Thanks for you offer. Any advise or info is alway helpfull.
The flag bags are parts F3 in the kit. If you look at the later photo that Mardis posted, they are at the after end of the second level from the top, where there is a line of bridge windows at the forward end.
Armament-wise - it is what it is. The ship's main battery is the Talos launchers on the main deck, fwd and aft. Point defense AAW is assisted with the two Tartar launchers on the sides of the fwd superstructure - Assembly D (E13, 14,17) in the kit. The ASROC launcher (D46/F31) is for killing a submarine that should never get that close, and there are the two 5" 38 cal gun mounts on the sides of the after mack (parts E40, E41) for last-minute surface engagement.
The purpose of the ship is to take those long range Talos missiles to the theater and shoot down enemy aircraft 75 miles away. Nothing else really counts.
I'm not sure about your cranes, but they should not be for handling missiles outbound. Missiles are loaded onto the rails from the doors in the superstructure, parts E19. The E42 parts are probably for loading Talos into the magazines. They are loaded much faster than any crane would handle them. I believe the E4 cranes are for putting boats into the water from that upper boat deck.
Thanks Rick for the flag bag location, I was looking at som pictures but just could not figure out the terminal end. One down.
Still boggled by the crane type units for and aft, knew the kingpost aft of the second Mack was for boat handling, and are the 2 on the aft structure at the base of the taller illuminator, I had to add those. Thats way I wounded about the other 2 for storage loading. On the kit there are 2, what appear to be long hatches either side of the cranes. Many years ago I saw a new clip of a Talos or a Terrier loading on to the launch rails, fast, but in light of the new systems, cumbersom, but then they were stored horizontally, not vertically as now.
Rick thanks for your help! The model is at the stage were I am adding the "little" pieces, a lot of little pieces... Now also I can add my signal flag lines. Oh ah one more thing, brain fade here, the US Flag flys from the for mast when at see? I know, not from the bow or fan tail.
The cranes you are referring are boat cranes that were also used during UNREPs to handle fuel lines
I found a photo on line of the USS Chicago refueling USS Towers DDG-9 at:
and another at the same site of the Chicago in Sydney harbor using the cranes to lower the Admiral's Gig...
John, just awsome pictues and cruise narritive. I see the kingpost cranes in use, still my question is about the units fore of the aft illuminator tower and fore of the bridge.
[IMG][/IMG]may haps this picture will help.
I'll post shortly some other updates.. And to the puriest. I find that I can not bring any undated weapons to this build. No good location.. to me at least the Navy used up the available spaces on the deck.
John, Thanks again for you information
