I brought down a cottontail with a crow magnum at 30 yds where the pellet clipped the spine and still made it to the skin on the far side of the animal.
It's a balance to work out. If ME is low (7-12fpe)my thinking is .22 at close range or .177 out to 25-40yds, depending on energy and ability. For larger animals than cottontails and squirrels, I'd go close range with .177 to get max penetration to the vitals. If you're at 15 or more fp, out to 35 or 40yds the .22 will knock out small game where before they ran around and kicked with .177. If you're at 20 or more fpe, why would you go with anything smaller than .22? At this point you've got tons of energy, larger wound channl and rather flat trajectory.
