What do you guys use for backstops?

I was checking out a bullet trap over the weekend, a "Do-All" model for .22 rifle (non-magnum) rimfire rounds. It was pretty heavy, 29.99. Comes with one target clip.

Was wondering if a home-made one might be just as good, and additionally it mentioned about non-air rifle use, no indication why.

Appreciate any replies.

Most homemade non metal traps use Duct seal to stop pellets

I use both duct seal in 1 trap and phone books in a second. but behind all the traps i have a 3' square of 7/8" plywood just in case. don't need no holes in my plaster. Also duct seal is much quieter than the metal traps and captured the lead dust from exploding pellets(after they go splat on the metal)

Reason why I asked..

Gander Mtn has a Do-All .22 rimfire BT222 model for 29.99 on the shelf.

www.do-alltraps.com

Seems about 50% less than the same model elsewhere, not sure if it's mis-marked or what. Not set on getting it, but it did seem like a nice clean simple solution.

Decent trap(i have the cheaper $19.95 version

July 26 2006, 3:42 AM

from Sportsmans Guide. But it is LOUD when the pellets hit the steel backstop. I prefer the silent traps they mke much less noise and capture all the lead(quietly) too.
This is an OAK silent trap i bought from auction for $35 it came with 3.5lb of duct seal inside all I have to do is clean out the lead every once in a while and smooth down the seal evenly again. It should outlast me!

Inside my garage 15 yards or 45 yards if at end of drive. I use a old large phone book. It stops ricohcets and you can recover the pellet if you wish. I have a larger back stop behind the target taped or stapled to the PB.

Cheap, thick and it works.
