Stutzen accuracy issue

.177 Gamo Stutzen, less than 500 rounds cycled thru it.

Tech Force, air gun rated scope, mounted using Beeman one-piece scope mount with internal stop properly secured. set at 12x for 'zeroing'. mount has been "lapped in" for secure fitting into mount.

powerplant securely mounted in stock.

35 yard range at 1" bullseye from sandbagged assisted rest.

pellet selection: Gamo Hunter, Beeman silver sting, Crosman pointed premier, Beeman bearcup and Beeman silver Bear.

shooting 3 per group. (shot 3 groups of 3 rounds per group)

the BEST (read that smallest) group shot was just under 3"! that was with the Crosman pointed premiers. i would not think 35 yards is too far to expect 'good' or even 'excellent' accuracy from a rifle of this quality.

since this is a 'Stutzen' rifle, (a full length stock with a slot for an underlever cocking feature.) it has a forward mounting screw on the barrel itself to secure the forward part of the stock to the barrel/powerplant. would that be a source of problems in getting and keeping a "zero"? i would think it could.

what other issues might be affecting it's accuracy?

If possible try more pellets......w/edit

My Big Cat won't group with the Crosman pointed, Beeman Silver Sting or the Gamo hunters. I have never tried the other two you mentioned. If you can, try some RWS or JSB pellets. My BC shoots the RWS Superdomes and Super-H-Points pretty well, as in 3/4 of an inch or less at 30yds. But, as we all know, each gun is different. Try to stay away from the "pointed" pellets. Few of them shoot very good, especially at longer distances, with the exception of the Predator Polymags (made by JSB).

As for using a bag rest. Are you placing your hand in between the bag and your gun? Many times this will make a huge difference in accuracy.

Sorry, can't help with the forward stock screw possibly affecting the accuracy. I have no experience with that type of setup.

Edit: Duh, I forgot to ask if you checked the crown at the muzzle. Make sure there are no dings or burrs. If there are, you'll need to have it re-crowned.

"You've come far, pilgrim."------"Feels like far."
"Were it worth the trouble?"----"Ah, what trouble?"

It took my Gamo Stutzen at least three full tins

November 5 2009, 9:04 PM

of pellets to go from just fun plinking to the kind of accuracy needed for target shooting at that range.By then, even it's trigger has broken-in,too. Mine works great with Crosman domes from just-about-anywhere...better still with JSB Express. Domed pellets always work best for me,especially at 30yds. or greater. When the gun breaks in,it's going to be well worth your efforts. I hope you like it,if not,you can e-mail me!
