A special thanks to all those that helped pull off our 2nd National event this month! It has been quite some time since we have hosted any National events and we hope to be able to host one National event each year. We are truly blessed to have such a hard working powerlifting community that rallies to help at these kind of events.

This event was quite a challenge considering that there were only 45 entries by the post mark deadline; then ended up with 125 entries by meet time.

I must commend Larry Traub and his crew for pulling off a last minute qualifier to bring 25 lifters from St. Xavier High School, Kentucky. Larry and his crew left at 10:00pm on Thursday night and arrived around noon time on Friday afternoon--driving a non air-conditioned school bus. Larry is not only a great lifter (nearly 700 lb deadlift at age 50; 9x Masters Champion) but a great inspiration and coach for these young guys!

I will post updates until I cover all of the weight classes:

114 class-
(14-15)
1st place: Tyler Baines (St. Xavier HS) 307.5 k total
(16-17)
1st place: John Conner (Racine, WI) 312.5 k total
(18-19)
1st place: Jeremy Scruggs (Fort Worth, TX) 505 k/ 1113 lb total--- Jeremy had an awesome meet!
American Record Squat (177.5 k/ 391 lbs), Bench (105 k/231 lbs) and two misses at an American Record: 112.5 k/248 lbs; Deadlift (222.5 k/ 490 lbs) and a 3rd attempt miss at 227.5 k/ 501 lbs)
2nd place: Marc Barbier (Nicholls State) 387.5k total
continues to show marked improvement at national meets
3rd place: Jeremiah "Snoop" Welch (LA Tech) 317.5 k total

123 lb class
(16-17)
Joshua Roberts (St. Xavier H.S., Kentucky) 375 k total
Andrew Blessinger (St. Xavier H.S., Kentucky) 352.5 k total
Dan Nitzken (St. Xavier H.S., Kentucky) 312.5 k total
(18-19)
Gilbert Montes (Cactus, TX) 490 k/ 1080 lb total
missed an American and National Record Deadlift on his 3rd attempt- 225 k/ 496 lbs- lifted nicely at this meet!
Mike Hafenbrack (Yutan, NE) 475 k total, up from the 114 class, coached by James hart, also had a very nice day on the platform; he had a nice 177.5 k/391 lb squat and tried a 207.5 kilo deadlift to try and catch Gilbert Montes

132 lb class
(14-15)
1st place Brad Deville (Deville, LA) 395 k total went 8 for 9 in his first national meet at the age of 14. Pretty amazing 14 year old...319 lb squat, 176 lb bench, 374 lb deadlift for a 870 lb total!! He was coached by Christy Newman and Jon Magndie. But he will have to lose his nickname "Muffin"-- Christy says he got that nickname as a toddler--maybe we can call him "Biscuit".
2nd place Russell Johnston (Racine, WI) 352.5 k total, also had a pretty good day on the platform for such a young guy!
(16-17)
1st place Daniel Brignac (St. Amant, LA) 392.5 k total- he had to out last an excellent effort by David Norris who had the winning pull up and was red lighted due to a hitch. Daniel has a neat story. I taught him in first grade, he is profoundly deaf, and has a cochlear implant. Not only has he worked hard to excel in Powerlifting, he has a 4.0+ GPA in honors classes, scored a 32 the first time he took his ACT (Jr year), and even plays the tombone in the schools marching band-- then busted his behind loading plates as soon as he finished lifting!

2nd place David Norris (St. Xavier, Kentucky) 380 k total
Had the winning pull ripped up but seemed to have got a little excited and over exagerated and hitched as he locked out.

(18-19)
1st place Aaron Phillips (Racine, WI) 470 k total had a great day! He went 8 for 9. A very balanced attack 180 k squat, 105 k bench, 185 k deadlift.
2nd place Nick Trzaskus (St. Xavier, Kentucky) 445 k total
May have been a bit closer if he didn't hadn;t missed his 2nd and third benches---172.5 squat, 90 k bench, 182.5 k deadlift.
3rd place Charlie Blessinger (St. Xavier HS, Kentucky) 427.5 k total--went 5 for 9.

(Juniors)
1st Place MARCUS WILLIAMS (LA Tech)---WHAT A PERFORMANCE--AND HE JUST TURNED 20 ON MAY 10!!! 648k/ 1428 lb total!!!! 247.5k/ 545 lb squat(Open and Junior American Records), 125k/ 275 lb bench, 275.5k/ 606 lb deadlift (American and Open Record/ American and Open total record) I had overscheduled IPF judges......but by the week before only had two on Saturday and when Dr. Billy Jack Talton came in on Sunday I had the three necessary to judge world records. Marcus' attempt had two IPF ranking judges therefore paperwork can not be completed to be submitted....His coach Trey and I discussed this prior to the lift. Marcus will have a free entry and free room on me at the 2004 Mens Nationals in Baton Rouge. My apologies--I have a strong feeling that you will see Marcus at the Mens World Championships.
2nd Place Micah Kiletico (LA Tech) 537.5 k total....Put together a nice meet! missed a Junior American Record bench 142.5k/ 291 lbs.
3rd place Danny Blanchard (Nicholls State) 477.5 k total in his first national meet and went 8 for 9! Nice Job!

Look for more updates as the week goes by! Complete results are on my lap top and will be transferred to excel and emailed to all lifters in my address book and I'm sure posted on this site as well as Powerlifting From the Bayou.
