Hi
Good to hear this forum is still about the music and Pat's talents as a guitarist and songwriter! The things that really count, not some crappy tabloid media circus some people seem to love getting roped into! I can't be bothered with it anymore, they're a good band and the music's brilliant, write about that for a change!
Anyway......Pat's playing tonight with Shambles, in Plymouth. He'll be doing the rest of the tour. Quite a good one this year. Lots of gigs abroad!
Pat is a genuine, passionate musician. He loves his guitar, loves writing songs and can sing as well.
When he gets on stage and starts to play, it looks as though he was born with a guitar in his hands, don't you think?
A few people have said that his guitar is like an extra limb, a part of him, he's so comfortable with it, so fluid and very talented, a natural talent. He has worked hard to get where he is now.... Started playing guitar when he was about 11 / 12 ish - his Dad bought him his first guitar. What a Great Man - "Here you go Pat, got you a guitar, thought you might wanna have a go!" And....what do you know....He was a Natural, loved it and started playing straight away.
At 16 he went to Music College, where he hooked up with some good musicians and formed a band with them. These guys have become very good friends of Pat's and they still hang out together, (they now have formed their own bands) . In fact, up until just a few years ago, pat was still in a band with Rob (one of his former college band mates) called "The Six Cold Thousand", now known as "The Rebecas". This is really, really good band, check them out on MySpace.com.
Shortly after leaving College, he played bass with a band called "Five Hundred and Crave" (this is going back a few years now).
He then joined "The White Sport", playing both guitar and bass on the album: 'Songs The Postman Can Whistle' - a great album, have any of you heard it? (Adam, Shambles Drummer, used to be in "The White Sport" as well, small world!).
Pat then joined "Whitey" and a few other bands....He was kept extremely busy, getting asked to play guitar by a number of artists: "Ed Laliq", "Seb Rochford" - 'Acoustic Ladyland', who was the drummer on the 1st Babyshambles single - 'Babyshambles' with Pat on Bass and Pete on Guitar...
At one point he had to start turning offers down as it was getting a bit ridiculous.....He didn't care if they were signed, already huge, had money, had none...etc, etc... he just wanted to play guitar and that is what he did!
Then, of course, more recently he joined Babyshambles (as you are all well aware!)
So, as you can see....he's had quite a varied musical background...
He Loves listening to: Jimi Hendrix, Dinosaur Jnr., Sonic Youth, The Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, Nirvana, The Stone Roses, The Clash, Lemonheads, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Blues, Jazz (He's quite clued up on any genre of music really. Fortunately, he has good taste!!).
Well, I hope this answers a few questions....
Hope you enjoy

wow - thanks for all of that info Nadia! It's really interesting to know more about his musical background. That was really cool of his father to give him a guitar.... I did actually try to teach myself the guitar at one point.. but ended up stopping!
Yes, i would say that Patrick really does seem like a natural on the guitar - i dunno, he just seems to do all these amazing things with it; sometimes i watch him play and i think "how does he come up with that?". It's so good.
I've heard the White Sport album - wow! I love it. I remember James came online at the end of last year saying that it was scheduled for release in March - which has obviously gone now. It's a shame actually 'cos i think it deserves a proper nation-wide release, but hey.
Anyway thanks once again for the info!

i love pat's guitar playing. it's so different from the rest of the indie ciruit. that bit in killamanjiro, the paul epworth version, about a minute in, where it all goes funny - it's brilliant! and up the morning, in general...great song, it reminds me of the manics around 'everything must go', strangly.
do you know if babyshambles are looking to sign a new record deal? it's strange having such a decent band seemingly on a limb

Why did you stop?? you should start taking lessons again!
Pat played his guitar every day, without fail for many years....
He still plays it at home as often as he can and never stops trying out new things and learning! Yeah, he's a fantastic guitarist, but he'll be the first to say you should never stop learning and growing and practice practice practice. It's the only way.
He reads books, scores, scales, he won't become complaceant and think, well....I can play the guitar, I don't need to learn anymore.
No, he is gonna be one of those guitarists that just gets better and better over the years. Just think, what will he be doing in 5 - 10 years? Blowing us away even more with his mad, amazing fucked up guitar sounds! lol
Glad you guys appreciate it. I think the same when I watch him play....wow, how does he do that? Some of it is impromptu, experimenting on the spot. No 2 songs will sound identical at 2 different gigs, know what I mean? He just seems to know exactly what every note sounds like and exactly which ones to play - quite extraordinary, really.
It's so good for me to be able to actually say these things and express how I feel to people who understand.
He doesn't like it when I talk about how amazing I think he is, he's very modest and thinks I'm just saying it 'cos I'm his girlfriend,,,blah blah blah which I'm not.
Anyway, he's gonna read this so......he's gonna get all embarrassed! Bless xx
So, we have some White Sport fans...I agree, it's a great album
Cheers

...yeah Matt (w1klo) i know what you mean about that middle part of Killamangiro (single version). It's like when you watch the video of that part and it's like got that kinda jaded feeling... i can't really explain it, but yeah it's good.
as for me - why did i stop playing guitar? well to be honest i didn't really get that far. hehe. And anyway, i was more into all that a few years ago, but i've moved on, and right now I'm not sure i'd want to learn the guitar anymore..... Anyway - i'll leave the guitar playing to the experts - like Patrick!
I love 'Up The Morning'. It's probably my favourite song on the album (although i love all the songs!). It's like this rising thing at the begining and then when the guitars come in - wow! It's a really beautiful song.
Hey Nadia, i was wondering about the songwriting process? Like, do Patrick & Peter sit down and write a new song together from scratch; or do they have their own invidual lyrics/riffs and stuff and then bring them together, if you see what i mean. For example, i know that the first few lines in 'Boozin and Bandin' were used later in '8 Dead Boys'.

Thanks for all that background on how Pat started playing.
He's probably one of my favorite guitarists because of his distinct sound and i never get bored with his playing because he's always improvising and doing different things...
I'm really amazed at his dedication and motivations as well, practicing so much when he was young. I started playing and i like playing but i only pick it up nowadays when i'm really bored. I guess i would be more inclined to practice if i was naturally good at the guitar like Pat seems to be.

well i've got the whole album in mp3, but it hasn't been released properly. I think it's only available on limited released Vinyl. But don't quote me on that. Even though i've got it, i'm still half-hoping it'll be released in the shops one day, so i can get a proper copy! It's a class album.
er, you could email James Mullord for a copy. or possibly ask Adam?? i dunno.
this is what James said a few months ago about the album:
is Pat self-taught, or did he have lessons? i know some people say you shoudl never have lessons, because the more lessons you have, the less you'll be able to develop your own unique style.
I've had a few guitar lessons, but then i stopped because i wasn't getting much out of them (and i didn't really relate to the guy teaching me, i think that was part of it). i stopped playing for a while and am just getting back into it right now.

Hi, i'm sorta in a similar position to Pat when he first started playing guitar. I'm 14 now nad have been playing for about 8 months already. I got my first electric guitar for my 14th birthday, I taught myself for 7 and a half months, and have now had 2 lessons. I've just become obsessed with guitar playing, I play about 4-5 hours every day, and I love every moment of it. I've become so obsessed I've now got seven guitars, speaking of which I discovered a video recently in which Pat is playing a guitar that looks just like mine, so I'd find it really great if you could pretty pretty please ask Pat if he plays a Yamaha AES-1500? I think that's what he was playing in the video. A big, orange guitar in the style of a Gretsch. Thanks very much!

Oh i'm sorry, I forgot to bookmark this site and lost it, I figured out what the guitar was anyway, but I do have another question. I read Pat plays a 1960 Jazzmaster, and was just wondering if he has made any modifications to it? Does it have stock pickups and tuners? Bridge etc. If you could ask him I'd really appreciate it, and I hope to hear more of his great guitar playing soon!

I can't wait to buy the White Sport album when it comes out on the 31st, Andrew Aveling is a fantastic vocalist.
Patrick epitomised the unique Babyshambles sound for me, and made Down in Albion as special as it was. Not to mention the fact that he just looked cool as fuck when playing on stage, something that Mik doesn't quite have. So yeah i wish him good luck on whatever he's doing these days.

i have to say the scatting analogy is quite priceless.
but i go hope pat comes back soon, either to shambles or with whatever band as long as he's playing guitar. He is so talented... i was watching some old bs live videos and he was sooo good.

I was at this gig and didn´t know that Pat had left and i have to say i never understood that one player could make such diffrens. I really hopes he comes back to Babyshambles and everythings is alright with him.
The media makes u sick, i can´t understand how in earth they could try to "hide" babyshambles music and just talk a lot crap. Here in sweden almost none had ever heard the music at all! Really hopes they light up the music and try to do their job instead just talking crap, crap, crap.. grrr.
Hugs
