RE: Walt Moryn Glove

Response to jc higgins walt moryn

"Late 50's" would be about as close as 100% sure on a date as I could guess. The only documented J.C. Higgins Walt Moryn glove I can find is a 1958 model, with a model number of 1674. It's possible they may have produced these a year or two before and after 1958- old Sears catalog data isn't readily available for every single year.

(J.C. Higgins was the brand name and logo used on sporting goods sold through Sears from the 1920's to around 1960. The gloves were produced for Sears under contract with Wilson sporting goods.)

While the glove collecting guides describe Moryn-endorsed gloves as being "rare" (they were made for only a short time and not that many were sold), unfortunately "rare" does not always equate to "valuable".

Two factors working against a high value for this one are low collector demand (not too many big Walt Moryn fans out there...) and the fact that this model was a relatively inxpensive, low-quality glove, likely aimed at the youth market. Collectors tend to go for gloves that bear endorsements of popular star players and top-of-the-line models that were made from the best leather and materials.

Condition does play a factor. You describe your glove as being in "good" shape. Actually, on the grading scale assigned to gloves, "good" isn't really all that good! A "good" condition glove can be in pretty rough shape and show heavy use. Sight unseen, I would guess that your glove is in the range of "very good" to "excellent" on the standard glove grading scale.

The book value (which represents the highest possible retail value one can typically expect) is between $20-$35 for such a glove in the "very good" to "excellent" range.

I hope this information proves useful! Feel free to send photos to the email address on my website (link below) and I will be able to provide a more accurate appraisal.
