Response to J.F. Hillerich & Son Co "Special League No. 21" bat

I can give you a little info on this bat. Bats are not my specialty- I'm a glove guy!- but I do have some good bat information in one of my collecting guides.

Based on the labeling, this bat should date from between 1911 and 1916. Prior to 1911, J.F. Hillerich bats omitted the word "Company" from the logo (ie: they read "J.F. Hillerich & Son", instead of "J.F. Hillerich & Son Co.").

In subsequent years "Bradsby" joined the company and beginning in 1916 the bat logo read "Hillerich & Bradsby".

From a collectible standpoint, values for vintage bats usually hinge on any star player endorsements etched on the bat. The exceptions are for unique style bats, such as ring bats or mushroom knob bats, which would pre-date even your bat.

The "Special" models were usually smaller bats in both length and diameter and made of a lesser grade of ash. That is confirmed by your bat being only 33" long. Full-sized bats are generally regarded as being at least 34" in length.

I can't find any specific pricing info for this particular bat. As a purely anecdotal guess, based on similar bats I've seen, I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of $50.

But don't quote me on that- after all, I'm a glove guy!
