Help with John F. WALTON b. 1842, Jackson County

by

I have just obtained my G-G-Grandfather John F. WALTON's Confederate Army enlistment contract. It states that he was a citizen of McMinn County, TN at the time of his enlistment (1862), but that he was born in Jackson County, TN. He was born in January 1842.

I can find no WALTON Family listed in the Jackson County Federal Census reports for either the years 1840 or 1850. There is a John WALTON of the correct age listed in the 1850 Census as living in Butler County, AL with his mother, Mary. However, that family appears to have lived in Butler County as early as 1830.

The only WALTON family I can find in Jackson County prior to 1850 is the family of Henry WALTON in the 1830 Census.

John F. WALTON apparently relocated to McMinn County, TN prior to 1858 when he married Lucinda ERWIN in that location. He and his family (Lucinda, Alfred and Sarah) are listed on the 1860 Census of McMinn County.

He apparently returned to Jackson County sometime after his Confederate Army service ended on 12 Nov. 1863 because his daughter, Climmie (Clementine?) WALTON married my G-Grandfather, George C. KEY between 1880 and 1882 in or around Jackson County.

I find Lucinda WALTON with her children Alfred, Sarah (Sally), Clementine and Manda listed on the 1870 Census of Jackson County as living in Kirby's Mill. The head of household is listed as Jackson WALTON, 33, M, farm laborer.

The 1900 Census lists John F. WALTON again living with Lucinda in Tarrant County, TX. I suspect that John F. might have relocated to Texas during or after the Civil War and left his family in care of a relative, possibly a younger sibling: Jackson WALTON. I cannot find an appropriate Jackson WALTON anywhere else on any Census report.
