GIDEONbyAngerona Gideon was the youngest (16th child) of Zephaniah and Anjarona Elizabeth (???Morris) Gideon who married circa 1810-1812, most likely in East Tennessee. Jackson County, AL census records show their 16 children were born between 1812 and 1840. Census records show their first three children (Martha Jane Gideon, born Nov 18, 1812, William G. Gideon, born Nov 8, 1813, and Mary C. Gideon, born Jan 20, 1815) were both born in Tennessee. Their 4th child (Henry Gideon) was born between 1819 and 1821, and may have been born in Alabama. Calvin Gideon (their 5th child) was born April 19, 1822, in Alabama, and he married Artemissia Matkin on April 2, 1854, in Missouri. I am a descendant of Zephaniah's 10th child (Eliza Gideon who married William Leroy Rounsavall on Aug 24, 1853) who was born Jan 12, 1830, in Jacson County, AL. For more than 30 years I have attempted to prove the parents of Zephaniah and Anjarona Elizabeth Gideon. Circumstantial evidence makes it appear that Anjaarona Elizabeth Gideon was the daughter of William Morris who was Zephaniah's near neighbor as long as W. Morris lived. Also, William G. Gideon married Charlotte Morris on Dec 24, 1844, and family tradition says this couple were cousins. I have never been able to prove the parents of Zephaniah, but Jackson County, AL census records show he was born in South Carolina. Zephaniah's tombstone (in Smith Chapel Cemetery just west of Scottsboro, AL) says he was born on July 5, 1789, and died Feb 17, 1870. Anjarona Elizabeth Gideon was born on Dec 11, 1794, and died on Aug 21, 1864. Zephaniah Gideon served in the War of 1812, having enlisted in Claiborne Co, TN. He applied for and received military bounty land in Jackson CO, AL. These records indicate he lived in Blount Co, TN, prior to moving to Jackson County, AL in the early 1820s. Goto Forum Home |
