Caldwell family of Scottsboro

I have many Caldwell family members who lived in Scottsboro. I would love to hear from any of my Caldwell relatives or anyone else with an interest in the family. In particular, I am interested in obtaining photos of Hamlin Caldwell, who was court reporter at the first "Scottsboro Boys" trial and Daisy Caldwell who did so much to preserve the history of the Caldwell family of Scottsboro.

Further, I notice that there is a Caldwell School and a Caldwell Park in Scottsboro. I wonder if either or both of these names came from any member of this Caldwell family. Tyro, February 20, 1851; educated Oxford, Mississippi; merchant; Bellefonte. He was educated Springfield, Ohio, and Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. He d. Bellefonte, April 10, 1872; she m. 2d, 1877, Jesse Norman and resided in Red Bank, Mississippi.

George Benjamin Caldwell,(Bro. of David K.) b, near Bellefonte, Alabama., April 2, 1851; m. Como, Louisiana, April 13, 1875, Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Daily and Anna Eliza (Brame) Hair, b. St. Joseph, Louisiana, January 11, 1851; died June 7, 1836; farmer, Scottsboro, Alabama; residence Louisiana, 1871-7; educated Springfield, Ohio, and Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. He was named after his uncle, Civil War Colonel and legislator, George Benjamin Snodgrass. He died January 18, 1929. She died June 7, 1936.

Europe Hamlin Caldwell, (Bro. of David K.,) b. near Bellefonte, Alabama, August 29, 1858; m. Stevenson, Alabama, October 10, 1883, Cornelia, daughter of Thomas Napoleon and Amanda (Washington) Allison, b. Bloomington, Alabama, January 3, 1864. He was educated Scottsboro, Alabama, and Springfield, Ohio; Bellefonte, until 1879; went to Scottsboro, and became clerk in mercantile house of which he later became partner; returned to his father’s farm near Bellefonte, 1885, and there engaged in farming, and merchandising; postmaster, Bellefonte, 1893; removed to Scottsboro, engaged in lumber trade. He died July 12, 1938. She died in 1942. Both are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Jackson County, Alabama.

Daisy Caldwelll0 (sister of Frances) b. Scottsboro, Alabama, September 13, 1884, Graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, Teacher, Extension worker U. S. Department of Agriculture. Died January 30, 1984. Unmarried.

David King Caldwell (brother of Frances) b. Scottsboro, Alabama, June 22, 1887, Graduate A P I Auburn, Class 1908 in Civil Engineering. Practiced Civil Engineering in the South principally on highway construction until 1935. After 1935 full time devoted to investments and civic affairs in Tyler, Texas. Married Lottie D. Ray, librarian Tyler Junior College July 24, 1950.

Irene Caldwell10 (sister of Frances) b. Scottsboro, Alabama, January 26, 1889. Graduate Alabama State College, Livingston Alabama and Army School of Nursing, Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D. C., Teacher, nurse on SS Leviathan, SS America, unmarried. She died August 17, 1968.

Eva Caldwell (sister of Frances) b. Scottsboro, Alabama November 21, 1890, Teacher, Extension worker with U. S. Department of Agriculture. M. John Chappell Sides, farmer and extension worker of Coffeeville, Mississippi, April 30, 1923. She died Coffeeville, Mississippi, July 20, 1949.

July 11, 1883, Fairport, Monroe, New York. Son of Stephen Donald Palmer and Alice Helen Elebash Palmer. Sunday School field worker and later minister in Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama. To¬gether they were authors of Sunday School literature and several books on Religious Education. Authors of “A Plan For Sunday School Teachers”, Youth and the church; “A Manual For Leaders Of Young People In The Home, The Church, And The Community”, “The New Religious Education”, “The ministry of laymen; “A Plea For Lay Evangelism: The Religious Education Of Adults” He died February 10, 1942. She died February 1964, Alabama.

YMCA Secretary, later President Blue Cross Hospital Insurance Company and Social Security Executive. Served in World War I. He died July 19, 1946. She became district manager Blue Cross Hospital Insurance Agency. Residence, Shreveport, Louisiana. She died July 9, 1991.
