needing some information (SMITH)

I am looking for information on my ancestors who settled in Jackson County back around the 1780's thru 1820's. Understanding Smith might be the most common surname in America my particular family might be a little different.

I am looking for 3 men inparticular: James H Smith born abt Jun 1820, James P. Smith, and James A. Smith born abt 1760 in Hanover County, Virginia. They would be my great grandfathers in sequence with James A being my great-great-great-great-great grandfather. All of them were either born,living, or died in Jackson County. I am thinking of making a trip to Scottsboro around the first of August and would like some help on where I could find such information on my ancestors.

I have searched endlessly on the web with a lot of dead ends, but everything points towards Jackson County. If you could point me in the right directions I would greatly appreciate it.
