Orphans in Jackson County?

by

What would happen to two young girls age 9 and 7 if their parents had died around 1902 in Jackson County? I am looking for any information or orphanage records for Olivia Kay and Lillie Kay after 1902 when their mother died... There were three brothers also, Hiram age 11, Virgil age 12, and Mabron age 16. Mabron is old enough to be on his own, but what about the others? All three boys show up in the census in 1910, but the two girls (of course) are nowhere to be found. By 1910 they would be old enough to be married, but what happened to them in the meantime?
Please contact me if you can help...

Sect 33 TS2 R3 is about 3 1/2 miles westnorthwest of Hollytree just to the southwest of County RD4 as it turns to the north. This is in the western part of Jackson Co. about 1 1/2 mi from the Madison Co. line. Google Hollytree Alabama and you can see about where it is.

McPherson / Rash

by

Looking for info on a Reuben McPherson who was born in Tennessee and died 15 August 1842 in Jackson County. He married Elizabeth Rash in 1813. Elizabeth was born 12 Jan 1799 in Morristown, Grainger, Tennessee and died 1894 in Arkahsas. Elizabeth's father, John Rash, was born 1775 in Virginia and died 1840 in Jackson County, Alabama. Very little of this info is sourced and I'd like to find "proof."

Samuel Cates

by

Would like to find out what happened to Samuel Cate/s family. 1870 Census Samuel age 65 yr. is living in Alabama, Jackson County, Post Office is Bellefont (District 10 Subdivision #1)Pg. 5 or Pg 57 (printed #). In the household are Mahala age 35 (this person is in question because his most recent wife was Polly/Mary Jinkins, so we don't know if this is a 3rd wife.) Ava Nola age 13, Gideon age 10 (Simon Gideon Nero later moved to Rome GA) and Mary age 8. The older children by the 2nd wife, Polly Jinkins are not readily identifiable in the area and the older children by the 1st wife have long since left the area during the CW. None of the female children were old enough to be age 35 by this census although there is a daughter from the 1st marriage, Mahala Clementine, who was married and living in Tullahoma Tenn. with husband and child, she would be age 25 yrs.

So the question is; Is this Mahala the daughter from the 1st marriage come to visit, or is this a 3rd wife for Samuel. I have not found a 3rd marriage at Ancestry.com Tenn. marriages. I have tried to find if Samuel owned property but that does not seem to be the case. Short of making a visit to the area is there a way to find out if there are any burials under the name of Cate/s?

I have checked the 1880 census and there is no trace of Ava Nola, or Mary, and no Mahala Cates in the Jackson Co. area. They just sort of seem to disappear.

For those of you who regularly do research in this area what do you suggest I look at to check for deaths of Samuel and/or Polly? How would I check for marriages for Ava Nola?

Thanks, Kathleen

Samuel Cates

by

Clay,
Thank you for your efforts, I am at a loss as to where to go to look for this family after that 1870 census. I do have them in 1860 & 1850. I know that at least 3 of the children marry in Tennessee and maybe that is the place I should be looking.
Thanks again for your response and your efforts in looking for this family.

The Jackson Co. Marriage Records before 1851 were burned during the Civil War so unless someone was married somewhere else or they have a family bible record there is nothing.

There is a long Phillips family tree you can see either at ancestry.com or at rootsweb.com. The family tree I saw was in error in listing a Margaret Jane Reynolds??? b. 1857 as his only spouse. The 1880 Census lists wife as Charity and the Jackson Co. Marriage Records shows him marrying Margaret J. Bailey b. Oct 1877 and she is listed with him on the 1900 Census. Charity was likely his first wife and Margaret N. Bailey his second. So I would take the family tree as a guide but give the records the most weight.
