Looking For Birth father (Roger Dale Bell)

by

I am looking for my birth father Roger Dale Bell. My mom's name at the time was Diana Lee Jones. She had a daughter with Terry Lee Jones. I was conceived with Roger when Terry was in jail. Roger has 2 son's and a wife at the time named Gaylon Bell. I am 26 and have been looking for him for some time with no luck. His parents lived in Dutton, Al. He was from the mountain. I would just like to hear his voice and know what he looks like. My father Tom Dolberry adopted me when I was 2, I wasn't told till I was 14 he was not my father. This is the only piece of my life that is missing. If any can help, please email me @ cdorsett2005@hotmail.com. I know that he is in his 50's and rented the sand mountain speedway from 1977-1979. If any one can help it would be a blessing. I just want to know the man who gave me life.

Thank you,
Celeste D. (jones) (dolberry) Dorsett

Barnett/Hughes/Owen family

by

Looking for grandmother's family. Grandmother was Mary B. Barnett; her mother was Susan Anna (possibly Hughes). Husband's name believed to be Charles. When he died, she married William C. Owen. Children of Susan Anna are Charles A Barnett and Clay W. Barnett according to census. Other children may include not only Mary B. but Georgia, Appie(?) and possibly others, last name Barnett. Mary B. Barnett married Lee Mack Hayes in Jackson County in 1886. She was 15 years old although the wedding certificate says she was 17. Any assistant will be greatly appreciated.

Charles J. Barnett m. Eliza H. Dickson 1 Jan 1841 Montgomery Co. AL
Charles Barnett m. Elenor B. Owens 28 Apr 1858 Shelby Co. AL
Charlie Barnett m. Susan Hughs Shelby Co. AL no date given (from the age of the oldest children probably 1864)

Melvina 12 Dau Laborer AL SC AL
Charles 7 Son AL SC AL
George F. 3 Son AL SC AL

With Mary B. and the two boys listed on the 1900 this would be all of her children (7). One had died by 1900 with 6 living. Riney A. and Melvina would be the same child, Riney was probably suppose to be Viney.

Noah Barnet age 19 is listed as a farm laborer in the household of Samuel Tipton on the 1870 Jackson Co. If this is correct there is a Charles Barnet age 26 listed on the 1850 Montgomery Co. AL don't know if this is him but is the only Charles Barnet(t) b. SC and of the right age.

There is a Susan Hughes age 3 on the 1850 and age 12 on the 1860 Macon Co. AL Census the daughter of Rowland B. and Mahala Hughes he is listed as a Horse Doctor. However he and Mahaly are on the 1870 Montgomery Co and a Susan E. age 18 is listed with them. Pehaps they just gave the name of the wrong daughter? No other Susan Hughes found b. 1847-49 AL.

William C. Owens m. Susan Barnett 17 Oct 1899 JC AL by JOP J.K. McClendon OS Page 491

With the above you can order a copy of their marriage record from the Jackson Co. Courthouse cost is $2.00 per page.

I did not find marriages for any of the other children in AL.

Spelling and ages as on the census.

Hayes/Hays/Hayse

by

Looking for any information on my grandfather. Known at various times as Lee Mack Hayes, Mack Hayes, L. Maxwell Hayes, Lee Maxwell Hayes, with any variation of the last name spelling. Born about 1862 in Georgia (Rome, Elijay area probably). Family lore claims he crossed into Alabama in an oxcart with some cousins when he was 16. Married and divorced in Alabama somewhere (supposedly using the Maxwell name). Married my grandmother Mary B. Barnett in 1886 in Jackson County and lived there until they moved to Texas. Any information much appreciated. I don't even know his parents name and he didn't even know his birthdate.

Johnson Cemetery Inquiry

by

Is anyone familiar with this cemetery? I'm trying to find my great-great grandfather, Rolly (or Rollie) Johnson who died about 1928. I'm hoping I might find him in this cemetery. His baby son, Gene Tunney Johnson, who also died around 1928 may also be buried near him.

According to my map the cemetery is located just off the north side of Highway 72 between Mud Creek and Stevenson. Going from Scottsboro to Stevenson, I estimate it is on the left about 2 - 3 miles past the intersection with County Road 42 to Fackler and Carns.

Any help would be appreciated.

White-Clark Connections

by

Searching for the ancestry of the following:

Woodie "Tuss" White, wife of James Green White of Jackson County, Alabama (1910 and 1920 Census); She died about 1949 near Huntland, Franklin County, Tennessee. What was her maiden name? Is this couple the same as James G. White and Maria W. Edwards who were married 26 Sep 1879 in Madison County, Alabama?

Woodie is said to have a sister named Susanna "Pony" Clark, wife of John Clark also of Jackson County, Alabama. Is this couple the same as John Clark who married Susan A. F. Edwards 14 Dec 1895 in Madison County, Alabama?

Woodie's granddaughter, Angie (1900-1985) married Finis G. Stovall (1899-1982); Angie and Finis are buried at the Mount Carmel Cemetery near Huntland, Franklin County, Tennessee.

Angie's obituary (The Herald-Chronicle of 12 Aug 1985, Winchester, Tennessee) says that her parents were Green White and L. White. Believe these were her grandparents.

Lots of questions. Need help in documenting out Angie's ancestry.

Thanks!

Garnett and Vaughn Family

by

I am looking for any information on a John and Nancy (Vaughn) Garnett who are listed in the 1850 Census of Jackson County Alabama. John was a stonecutter. The family is listed in the 1860 Census record for Scottsboro, Jackson, Alabama. They had a daughter Martha J Garnett born in 1847 who married a John F. Cody in Franklin County Tennessee in April 1865. After Martha and John married they later moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he was a grocer. The family is listed in the 1870 Nasville Tennessee census record. They had two children that I am aware of. Mary E and J. Wilbur. Wilbur settled in Louisville KY and was my grandfather.

Martha is listed as a widow in the 1900-1920 census record in Louisville Kentucky. Martha later moved to Columbus Ohio in 1930 to live with her daughter Mary E.Davenport and died on September 9, 1930 in Columbus Ohio.

Any information will be appreciated.

Lucinda ??? & Gideon Gifford

by

Hello,

I am helping someone who is researching Lucinda and Gideon Gifford with the purpose of learning Lucinda's maiden name in order to track her ancestry back to NC.

We know that Lucinda was born c. 1815 in NC, she married Gideon Gifford, possibly in Jackson County, c. 1832 and they started having children and are found in the 1840-1880 census. Gideon was murdered by a son, William, in 1894 and Lucinda also dies in 1894... they were in Jackson county during this whole period and are buried in a small cemetery (just the two of them). We have found his land grants.

The issue is how to determine her maiden name. We have tried identifying others from NC in Jackson County in 1850 and it's actually not a small number (though not a huge number either).

It would seem that Lucinda would have migrated with her family and then settled in Jackson County.

Any suggestions on "what" to research would be most helpful! Have not found them in the rootsweb archives for Jackson County or at the AL genweb site, http://home.hiwaay.net/~prm/jcalgenweb.html

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Diane :-)

Re: Lucinda ??? & Gideon Gifford

by

I have also been researching the Gifford's with our relation being through Martha Gifford daughter of Gideon and Lucinda.

Gideon was a brother to Joseph Wilkerson Gifford who is seen living next to each other in Northern Jackson County along Hurricane Creek in the 1840 census. Gideon moved to the location along Hwy 79 where he and Lucinda are buried in the mid 1850's. A possible brother is Robert Gifford who married a Roda or Rita who lived in the Princeton area. Their father is possibly George Gifford who is seen on the Franklin County 1812 Tax List.

I cannot prove but believe Lucinda (nickname Sindy or Cindy) and Joseph's wife Nancy were sisters with last name Vaughn. If you combine info from various censuses in Jackson County you come up with from 1850 Census Lucinda born 1817 NC and from 1860 and 1880 Census Nancy born 1815 NC.

If you look at the names of their children then certain names are repeated between them and other Vaughn family members. The Vaughn name went thru a number of transistions with Cherokee ties from North Carolina including Vann, Vaun, Vaughan, and finally Vaughn.

Nancy and Joseph's children were a posible Lucinda Gifford who married Edward Morris in Franklin County, Robert, Julia, Samuel, George, Milly, and Sarah or Sallie who married Jacob Miller.

Gideon and Lucinda's children were Allen or Alford, Martha, Nancy, Eliza Jane, James Gifford, George Washington, Mary Emaline, Betty Elizabeth Gifford, William M, and John L (shown as idiot on 1870 census).

Here are a few leads and possible relatives that I have not been able to connect:
William Vaughn, husband or son of Milly Vaughn (Vaughan, Vann)
William Vaughn, married Fereby Benton
Milly Vaughn, shown 80 years on 1860 census living next to Thomas Pruit
Samuel Vaughn, married Catharine (Hands) Hammons, son of William
Nancy Vaughn, married Thomas Pruit
Elizabeth Vaughn, married Daniel Sisk
Charles Vaughn, son Charles married Mary Money
Eldridge Vaughn, married Polly Elliot, daughter on Joseph Elliot (1/2 Cherokee)
Mary Jane Vaughn, married Lemuel Fortner
Thomas Vaughn, had daughter named Lucinda

Please let me know if you can make a connection.

Joseph W. and Nancy ??? Gifford

by

An interesting side line to this is that Joseph W. and Nancy Gifford divorced probably in the early 1870s. They are living apart on the 1870 census(Nancy is living with Jacob and Sarah C. Miller)and Nancy Gifford is listed as Divorced on the 1880. Joseph W. Gifford married Josephine Justice in 1877. Another researcher on the jackson-co yahoo genealogy group was looking for a Hannah Gifford b. ca 1865 daughter of Josephine Gifford it would seem this is Hannah Justice dau of Josephine and Unknown Justice.

Does anyone know if divorce records for the 1870s would be in the Jackson Co. courthouse.
