Wilson family-Paint Rock Valley Al.byJames W. Wilson and Delilah shipp my family line they lived there 1840 to 1859.Also looking for O.Alden Smith if you know him cotact me. Don L. Wilson e-mail don-wilson@sbcglobal.net Thanks |
O. Alden SmithbySaw your message about trying to find Alden. I think I had told you (but maybe I didn't) but Alden has been dead for many years. Regarding the info about John C. Shipp being Delilah Shipps father - I cannot find anything to verify this. Plus the John C. Shipp on the Dawes Rolls appears to me to be someone else as, unless I'm mistaken, the Dawes Rolls were done I think in the 1890's and her father would have long been dead by then. When I get more time I will verify this further. BUt I do think they are related somehow w/o a doubt. Rick Lawrence |
The GideonsbyI am the gggrandaughter of Angerona (Anjeronia, Anjarona, Angeroney) Gideon who married Joel Euel Matkin (Madkins)in Missouri 1866 and died in Missouri. Calvin Gideon, of AL, father to Valentine Gideon (state supreme court judge Utah)was also born in AL and married Artemissia Matkin in Missouri. I am trying to find out if they were related, if Anjarona is the daughter of Zepheniah Gideon of Jackson Alabama, and if so any information related to the family that might be available |
1850 Census GideonsbyThe 1850 Jackson County Census showing the Gideons is available at ALGENWEB Jackson County website, click on Jackson County Archives. Clay Gullatt Moderator jacksongenealogy-subscribe@yahoogroups.com |
GIDEONbyAngerona Gideon was the youngest (16th child) of Zephaniah and Anjarona Elizabeth (???Morris) Gideon who married circa 1810-1812, most likely in East Tennessee. Jackson County, AL census records show their 16 children were born between 1812 and 1840. Census records show their first three children (Martha Jane Gideon, born Nov 18, 1812, William G. Gideon, born Nov 8, 1813, and Mary C. Gideon, born Jan 20, 1815) were both born in Tennessee. Their 4th child (Henry Gideon) was born between 1819 and 1821, and may have been born in Alabama. Calvin Gideon (their 5th child) was born April 19, 1822, in Alabama, and he married Artemissia Matkin on April 2, 1854, in Missouri. I am a descendant of Zephaniah's 10th child (Eliza Gideon who married William Leroy Rounsavall on Aug 24, 1853) who was born Jan 12, 1830, in Jacson County, AL. For more than 30 years I have attempted to prove the parents of Zephaniah and Anjarona Elizabeth Gideon. Circumstantial evidence makes it appear that Anjaarona Elizabeth Gideon was the daughter of William Morris who was Zephaniah's near neighbor as long as W. Morris lived. Also, William G. Gideon married Charlotte Morris on Dec 24, 1844, and family tradition says this couple were cousins. I have never been able to prove the parents of Zephaniah, but Jackson County, AL census records show he was born in South Carolina. Zephaniah's tombstone (in Smith Chapel Cemetery just west of Scottsboro, AL) says he was born on July 5, 1789, and died Feb 17, 1870. Anjarona Elizabeth Gideon was born on Dec 11, 1794, and died on Aug 21, 1864. Zephaniah Gideon served in the War of 1812, having enlisted in Claiborne Co, TN. He applied for and received military bounty land in Jackson CO, AL. These records indicate he lived in Blount Co, TN, prior to moving to Jackson County, AL in the early 1820s. |

Very important warning Re: a group disturbing cemeteriesbyA group known as the North Alabama Paranormal Research Society has been visiting cemeteries in Jackson County Alabama in large groups and disturbing the sites. Recently they were in Robertson Cemetery and Mr. A no trespassing sign and made the sheriff aware. We need to take this very seriously and be on the lookout for these people and also put up no trespassing signs at every cemetery. If you examine their website you will notice they have been at a half dozen cemeteries in Jackson County. These people must be run out!!! http://www.naprs.us/index.htm |

Need a death verification in Jackson Co.byIs there anyone who can check local records to verify that Francis Youree Beavers AKA Frank Beavers died in Jackson Co. July 31, 1902. He was living with his family in or around Stevenson, Al. He was taken to Rutherford Co, Tn for interment. |
AL Death CertificatesbyAL did not require death certificates until 1908 so there would not be any record deaths earlier than this. The only way is if the death was entered in a Family Bible or on his tombstone. Clay Gullatt Moderator jacksongenealogy-subscribe@yahoogroups.com |

Kirk familybyDoes anyone have any information on the Kirks? I have been told that my ggggrandfather William Irison Kirk was the Jackson Co. sheriff. |
William Irison KirkbySo you still need information about William Irison Kirk? He was also my ggggrandfather. I have some information about him that my uncle found. It might have been printed in the Jackson County Heritage book; my uncle didn't write down the source unfortunately. It lists his father and grandfather and some of their family information. Let me know if you want the info. |
W I KirkbyI also am the GGGGrandaughter of William I Kirk. Please send me any info that you may have. Thanks |
W I KirkbyW I Kirk was indeed the Sheriff of Jackson County from 1869-1871 filling the term of the current sheriff at that time. He was appointed by the governor of Alabama. Also he was the mayor of Scottsboro in the time frame of 1908, I would have to look that up to give you the exact dates. I also am the GGGGranddaughter of him. My GGGrandfather was William Patrick Kirk. Of the Kirk family, his children are the only ones that stayed in the Tennessee Valley. |

My grandmother was Anna Kirk, daug. of Willis Kirk and they lived in Knoxville, TN. I have been to Scottsboro and tried to look for records but there was a festival or something going on and I didn't accomplish much but had a good lunch. Ha! Do you know if there are newspapers/books about the Kirks etc. in the library? Thanks. Nancy |
