William Irison Kirk

by

So you still need information about William Irison Kirk? He was also my ggggrandfather. I have some information about him that my uncle found. It might have been printed in the Jackson County Heritage book; my uncle didn't write down the source unfortunately. It lists his father and grandfather and some of their family information.

Let me know if you want the info.

W I Kirk

by

W I Kirk was indeed the Sheriff of Jackson County from 1869-1871 filling the term of the current sheriff at that time. He was appointed by the governor of Alabama. Also he was the mayor of Scottsboro in the time frame of 1908, I would have to look that up to give you the exact dates. I also am the GGGGranddaughter of him. My GGGrandfather was William Patrick Kirk. Of the Kirk family, his children are the only ones that stayed in the Tennessee Valley.

W I Kirk

by

I was looking at the Scottsboro site and found your message. It is old but may still be active. I am the gggrandaughter of W I Kirk. I have some on him but would like to see newspaper articles, etc. of him as mayor, also a death notice. I also am interested in his father and grandfather. My grandmother was Anna Kirk, daug. of Willis Kirk and they lived in Knoxville, TN. I have been to Scottsboro and tried to look for records but there was a festival or something going on and I didn't accomplish much but had a good lunch. Ha! Do you know if there are newspapers/books about the Kirks etc. in the library? Thanks. Nancy

The BUNCH family

by

My grandmother, Ida PARIS BUNCH, b. 16, March 1872, died 21, July 1944, buried in the Maxwell Cemetery in Jackson Co., Al. Ida first married Will Bunch. (This was the father's name listed on Ida's son, Tate Brady Bunch, Tennessee death certificate # 151751). However, Ida's daughter, Maude Lee Bunch's Georgia death certificate lists her father as Joe BUNCH. As I've not been able to get grandma Ida's death certificate I'm at a loss as to who Ida's first husband was. I've checked the census for Tn & Al & can't find a Will Joe or a William Joseph Bunch. Will died young & Ida married in 1900 in Jackson Co. AL, to my grandfather, Cicero Dawson MILLICAN.
Please if someone can direct me to a Bunch researcher I'd be so happy.
Thanks, Mary
P.S. Maude Lee was their first child born in 1892 & Tate Brady was their last child born 31, Aug. 1895. This is an indication that Will Joe died sometime between Aug. 1895 and Aug. 1900 when Ida married Cicero.

William and Ida Paris Bunch

by

The process of elimination says it is William. On the 1880 census for Jackson Co. Franklin 49 and Rutha J.41 Bunch are listed with 3 sons Wheler 16, William 7, Tate 5 and 3 daughters Jane 14, Margareth 11 , Julia 10 all b.TN.

On the 1910 Jackson Co. there is a J.W. Bunch 46 and a Pate (Tate) Bunch 33 therefore William is the one that has died.
J.W. lists a son Joe on the 1910, J.W.'s full name is likely Joe Wheeler Bunch (after Gen. Joe Wheeler).

On the 1920 Jackson Co. there is a Tate, a Wheeler and a Bradie.

There is no listing for William Bunch on the Jackson County Mega Cemetery File.

I did not find William and Ida on the AL marriage index.

Cotten/Mahan/Bridges/Blackwell

by

These 4 family lines are dead ends in Jackson County before the Civil War and the loss of court house records, so I'm told. Charles K COTTEN married Rutha E. MAHAN about 1828 in Jackson Co; they moved to Coosa Co and on to Texas by 1854. Lorenzo D. BRIDGES married Ann BLACKWELL about 1840; he died in 1856 and Ann brought the family to Texas by 1860. Ann BLACKWELL may have been a daughter of Charles BLACKWELL, Jackson Co resident 1830 and 1840 and brother of Peter BLACKWELL also of Jackson Co. Any help or suggestions on any of these early families will be appreciated!

Charles Blackwell

by

There is no proof that the Chsrles Blackwell in Jackson Co. AL is the brother of Peter Blackwell. You will find a Charles Blackwell with Peter in Rhea Co. TN in 1829. A Charles Blackwell is in McMinn Co. in 1825 where you will find Peter on the 1830 census.

New Address--Blackwell, Graham, Fannin, Padgett

by

Researching all of the above names who came into Jackson Co. AL ca 1820. Most of the descendants moved to Lincoln/Franklin Co. TN or to Rusk/Coryell Co. TX. Others moved to AR and MO.

Blackwells came from Rutherford Co. NC.
Grahams came from Surry/Stokes Co. NC.
Fannins came for Caswell Co. NC.
Padgetts came from Rutherford Co. NC.

Some major changes have been discovered in all of these families which depart from the printed material of the 1960's and before. Internet tends to pass on many of the incorrect statements from the past.

If you can't document it, you can't say it.

Glad to share documentation.

Charles Vaughan was killed in Franklin County, Tennessee in March of 1860.
Mary Money Vaughan did move back to Jackson County Alabama sometime after
her last child, Charles Alexander Vaughan, was born. She was pregnant with him when her husband was killed. I have found her living with her children on the 1870 Census in Jackson County.

HUNTS MILL

by

Hunts Mill was not a town or village. It was a sawmill located on present-day Old Larkinsville Road in the northwestern section of Scottsboro, AL (2-3 miles from downtown Scottsboro.)
There is a map in the atlas which contains Civil War maps mentioned in the Official Records of the Civil War which shows the location of Hunts Mill. There was a skirmish at Hunts Mill during the Civil War when it was being guarded by the 1st Alabama Vidette, basically composed of Jackson County, AL men who enlisted in the Union Army.

I am searching for information about James Mundy who is listed in the 1850 census as a Methodist minister. In 1837, a newspaper notice of his marriage to Miss Julia Jones lists him as JUDGE RECTOR MAJOR JAMES MUNDY. I suspect this may have been his second marriage, as the 1840 census lists several children over the age of five, Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

ALLEN

by

If you obtain Ananias Allen's complete military file from NARA there may be a list of his relatives in it.

Ananias and Wilson are living next to each other on the 1840 census.

There are four land patents for Ananias in Jackson Co. you might check and see if he he left a will or if there is an administration of his estate. Check with the Jackson County Probate Judge Office, Jackson County Courthouse, Scottsboro, AL 35786
phone 256-574-9290, FAX 256--574-9267. They charge $2.00 per document/page for copying. The court clerk will give you the details on sending your request.
