I would like some input.

We have not bred much lately because I just don't get enough calls from really good homes and I hate the idea if having puppies with no homes lined up or the prospect of a slow "market" (I hate that concept).
We have come to a point where we need to breed these girls. They are getting older and I don't want a bunch of pyos plus I do consider myself a dog breeder still.
Anyway.
How hard has it been for all of you to find truly quality homes?

Thanks for any input.

Pyo ??

by (Login DLemons1)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Sorry I can't help with home finding...But your message and comment about pyo made me wonder.

Is it common to get pyo in a bitch that is older and hasn't been bred?
What do you consider older?
What causes pyo?

Dogs are unique among mammals in that the progesterone actually breaks down their uterus with each heat cycle. As a bitch gets older and is not bred and isn't spayed the risk for pyometria goes up. Granted, a bitch can pyo anytime, but the best time to breed a bitch is when she is in her younger years, not older. Sure, have bred them first time older, but last time we did we had problems with the puppies.

I've had 2 bitches over the years that developed Pyometria. One was maybe 2-1/2 to 3 years old and the other we got a late start breeding and was 5 when she was bred for the 3rd time - she ended up not pregnant, and quite sick. Took her to Hutch's Clinic for exploratory surgery and after he opened her up to see what was going on, an immediate spay.

A comment to Elizabeth's question about finding good homes -
I think the number of good homes is about the same, but the economy has a strangle hold on finances and there aren't as many people looking for pups/dogs/pets right now. Those who are looking are being budget-minded in their search. Then there are the total idiots who have never shown and want a quality puppy bitch for $1,000 with full breeding rights. (ain't happening from me!)
I've had a number of inquiries from people wanting pups - next Spring. That doesn't help me now, when I have pups to place. However, I have had some success in placing older spayed/neutered pups and young adults with families that realize the added value of a dog that isn't going to need a lot of Vet services and is going to easily acclimate to a new home.

I haven't had problems selling the pups I was willing to place in a pet home early. My challenge has been finding good homes for those that I keep for several months, but later decide to place. I have succeeded with patience...but it has taken a LOT of patience to find the right home for them. happy.gif

I haven't bred for over a year, all my pups where sold by 10 weeks, to people I worked with, a friends mom. I only sold one out of town, & I was very nervous, but it has been a great home for the boy.

My friend likes to hold onto heres until they are older, 2 in question she has had the hardest, they want a puppy, fat & chubby. One is almost 2 & the other is 5 or 6 months. I think she even came down in price for the older ones vs the puppies they were willing to pay.

Glad you brought this up Elizabeth, My opinion is that considering the way the economy is many folks just aren't looking into making that addition to their family at this time. A good inidication of where things are right now with sales is to take a stroll over to bullynet.com, Last time I checked there were 80+, yes 80 bully's on the available's page - From all over the country so it's not just isolated to any specific area in the country.

Why so many? Times are just harder these days, not many folks looking to spend upwards of 2k+ on a dog the way things are these days.

If you need to breed your girls then you might just end up having to hang on to the pups for a little longer than usual if your lucky and or end up hanging on to them all happy.gif.

Either way best of luck with your girls.

Kind regards,
Randy

Most of the time i dont even talk to people about the puppies until 6 weeks, but i had people calling me before i breed and wanted to put money on the puppies. I was very happy with my puppy buyers, and they are great people. A friend has 10 puppies and has 2 who are not spoken for.

Well done and well written, E! Thanks for the kind words. I actually don't have a hard copy of it but I read it via the website. You can go to www.dognews.com, click the "Current Issue" and once you get to that page, scroll down and click "Archives." There, look for December 2009 and go to the December 11, 2009 Issue. I was planning on attending a Corky Vroom handling seminar in Jan. in SW Ohio, but it has been canceled because he has had some health issues. The sponsoring Club hopes to re-schedule in the Spring.
Anyone been to one of Corky's or better yet, both his and George's? Which did you get more out of, or are they similar? Does enough of their experience with other dogs transfer to be useful showing Bulldogs?
Thanks for any input!

any puppy with length of tail

by Rhiann (Premier Login rhianniam)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

will carry it high when they gate for balance. Her tail sets fine. A gay tail is one in which the tip of the tail is carried higher than the source of the tail- which is the base. Her tail is carried out when she puts it up but not up towards the sky. Looks at the BCA illustrated guide pic of a gay tail.
Karissa also has length of tail and will hold it out but it doesnt point up and into the air. As they grow thier tail becomes tightr and they wont be able to carry them as they do as puppies. For now they are like rutters. Used for balance, movement and carried out when they are excited.
No worries. She will be fine.
One thing you can do is when you stack her place your hand on her rear over the tail. This way she will learn to keep it down. I wount worry though. Her tail is fine and she is a puppy. Trust me. LOL!

actually there are probably alot

by (Login mikki96)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Since you are hoping for a response, both of those dogs have been used extensively and are in alot of pedigrees... its a matter of how far you have to go back to see them. I am sure thare are lines that dont have them in there... but the real question is not what the pedigree of the dog is but whats the quality of conformation of your dog as it compares to the standard.

Pedigrees are only on paper and are not the sole decider in the quality of the offspring... those two dogs probalby had the help of alot of other dogs contributing genetics as well and not every puppy produced by a dog is show quality. There are alot of dogs out there that were known to produce well and are in a large number of pedigrees just as the two you mentioned are and not every pup from them was showable either. There are alot of factors to consider.

Dont make the mistake of being enamored with a piece of paper... learn the standard and place value on the quality of a dog in question and while you are doing that... also love your boy unconditionally whether he turns out to be a show dog or not.

Just my opinion...

Their breathing, their hearts, joints, and general health is more important to me than the ring.

I'm still trying to figure out some things, I maybe should have found out before I got a dog, my intention was never to show, till lately. It's just all new to me.

You are experiencing...

by (Login wardbull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

a very common experience. You buy a bulldog as a pet, you start wanting to know more about the breed because of its great qualities as a pet and you start frequenting websites like this one and you want to experience the world of showing Bulldogs. Showing dogs is a very competitive, subjective and at times brutal sport. If you decide you want to show your dogs go to several shows in your are and compare your dogs to what is being shown. Do they look similar? Go to the BCA website and get a copy of the Official Bulldog Standard, read it over and over and try to comprehend its meaning. Contact a Bulldog Club in your area, join the club. Find an experienced Bulldogger that can help you understand the Standard and is willing to give you a honest opinion of your dog. Listen, and Learn you will not be a expert in this breed in 5 years...you will always be a student of this breed. Once you decide you know everything that there is to know about the breed you need to get out...you will never know everything about this breed or for that matter any breed.
Pedigrees are great tools for Breeders, Frigate and Pretty Boy have been used alot due to the quality of pups they sire, though not all are champions or showdogs, far from it. As Elizabeth said Frigate is an ancestor of Pretty Boy. I for one would never consider a breeding if I didnt know the good and the bad represented in a Dog or Bitches pedigree.
If you choose to join us it can and is a rewarding experience. That being said you will lose a hell of alot more than you win, if you cant handle that dont even start. Remember that this is something you should enjoy...when it becomes work you should reconsider your choice. Hope to see you in the ring.

I know just what you are talking about!

by (Login CathyandAudrey)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

It only took about 5 minutes for me to become completely infatuated with bulldogs when I met my puppy. She made me want to be around other bulldogs and people who love bulldogs, and I wanted as much information as I could get. I wish I had found this board earlier! The BCA meetings turned out to be a few hours away, nothing really local for me. When I started looking at the standard to see if my girl could compete, I found myself picking her apart piece by piece and not feeling too good about it. I would think her ears were 'wrong', too high on her head and there is definitely something 'wrong' with her jaw/nose/don't even know exactly what it is, but that's when I realized I would never make it showing her. I was offending myself with criticizing her, I would not be able to take it coming from others. I know there is nothing wrong with a pet bulldog, and I am content with that. Maybe in the future though!

I realized this when I was looking into Audrey's pedigree

by (Login CathyandAudrey)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

when asked what her line was I had no idea so I got out her 3 generation pedigree and started looking up the dogs on it. One of them was the top dog 2 years in a row, and I was so excited! Then I realized that 99.9% of the search results for his name were part of other dogs' pedigrees and I thought if there was an award for most offspring this dog would get that too! Still nice to know he's in there though. wink.gif

Hi, Indy

As stated previously Frigate is in Pretty Boy's peigree so it would be logical to see both. Pretty boy is a midwest dog (located within minutes of you in Indianapolis), so to see him in your pedigree is not uncommon for your area.
I think I mentioned to you before that we are having a Bulldog Club of Indiana meeting this Sat. 12/19/09. I feel it will beneficial for you to attend. If you would like an unbiased opinion on you pup, then bring him with you. My husband (John) and I will take a good look at him for you.
If you still need ears glued on the lil one, we will help you. Time and info on web site www.bulldogclubindiana.org
Finally, Pretty Boy's owner will be in attendance, so you could discuss his ancestry with her.

The dog you see before you is probably greater than 80 percent the result of its pedigree, with the remaining percentage accounting for environmental influences to include diet, training and other things (and yes, the numbers are debatable). The names on that piece of paper called the pedigree represent the dogs and their component features/traits/characteristics and in turn, those traits represent the genes and combination of genes of each dog and of the generations before them.

We all admire particular dogs for different and various reasons. The trick is to figure out why we admire a dog/bitch - what features do we admire, what virtues are our eyes drawn to and how do those stack up against The Standard? Why would that particular dog/bitch be good to have in your pedigree? How likely is it that the genes or combination of genes that made up those desirable characteristics will be available if the dog/bitch is incorporated into a pedigree?

If you are wanting a show quality pup then you need to make that clear to the breeder

by Louise Brinsden (Login brinsdenbulldogs)

before you purchase a puppy. It is no good buying a pup as a pet and then deciding you might like to show because there is a high chance your pup will not be fit for the ring but that doesn't change the fact that your Bulldog is the perfect pet happy.gif

Jessica if you hear of any it would be appreciated! I didn't realize how quiet it is in the Midwest during the winter. I'm going to enter our 6 month old Major in a couple shows and let Bill handle him.... Hopefully it will help him focus and not lose interest. Major isn't really ready but I don't think it will hurt either the boy or the dog as long as they are both having fun.

even want to show?? It isn't for everyone, and that is ok. Calamity Jane finished her championship, but you won't this girl sitting at home , we have been attending agility classes. Something we both love.

It is expensive to show dogs, and becoming more expensive as time goes by, entry fees are going up, You have to pay for fuel, hotel, parking fees, and time off from work.....and sometimes not always the best dog wins.

something to consider -

by Robin (Login RobinandLeo)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

If you list yourself as Agent, it could be assumed you are handling the dog professionally and that could be a problem if you ever want to enter the new Amateur/Owner/Handler class. Personally I would leave the Agent line blank to avoid any misunderstandings - if you aren't being reimbursed for your services.

if you are showing a dog that is with you and you don't put your name as agent, then the show information gets mailed to the owner, I'm sure its fine if you are picking up the dog and can get the schedule at the same time.

should be available from the Superintendent's website. The only time there might be a problem is if the show has an independent person doing the Show Secretary duties, then I'd ask for the info to be sent both to owner and handler if you can't get it otherwise.

Registered agents have a number you put in the box. The information still goes to the owner. If there is an agent number in the box it also goes to the agent. Just a name puts the name in the catalog only.

Showing Others' Dogs

by (Login validus)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

There's a great level of responsibility to show dogs owned by others. Sometimes I think people feel that it's as simple as taking the dog in the ring and taking it to the show. As much as possible, I always have clients designate me as the Agent for their dog so that if serious decisions need to be made on behalf of the dog and its owners, then I would be legally entitled to make them. When you take someone else's dog (someone else's property), you have to be prepared for the consequences, should something terrible occur - the worst being death of the dog. You should always have a plan in mind should something like that happen.

I am learning to understand rather than immediately judge or to be judged. I cannot blindly follow the crowd and accept their approach. I will not allow myself to indulge in the usual manipulating game of role creation. Fortunately for me, my self-knowledge has transcended that and I have come to understand that life is best to be lived and not to be conceptualized. I am happy because I am growing daily and I am honestly not knowing where the limit lies. To be certain, every day there can be a revelation or a new discovery. I treasure the memory of the past misfortunes. It has added more to my bank of fortitude.

Beautiful babies. Looks like the little girl has a thick heavy coat. My Mabel does also. Maybe from grandpa Oreo. And the boy's new "baby sister", (my little Maxine) is colored soooo much like him. However she doesn't have that sweet kissy spot on her nose like he does. Don't worry though, she still gets kisses. And boy you sure have a lot of white in that BooxSugar litter.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of you for working so hard over the year! Also, CONGRATULATIONS to Kyle Hennefer and the owners and breeders of Ch. Calee's The Skye Is The Limit for winning the Breed at the Eukanuba Invitational the other day!

I'm not sure, but a vet here in Indianapolis does stud fitness exams. That would concern me. Buddy and Brother both have been to a "Bulldog" vet. It seems Hips, elbows, eyes, trachea, and palate. Test for Brucellosis. Believe it or not, VD, proud to say I can't spell that. lol. I'm sure there's more, and it's all on the site, but I have to stumble onto something as a way of finding it.

Before we allowed Alfie to be used we did

by (Login mikki96)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

hip and spine x-rays to make sure structures were good. We did the OFA Cardiac and Patella... participated in the OFA trachea study. I had a full blood panel done to check for proper organ and thyroid functions and have ran a urinalysis on him to check for any concerns. the x-rays were not submitted to OFA as they were done before he was 24 mos of age and I havent redone them as what I was looking for isnt something that changes.

I did the same series of tests on his mother and most (but not all) of the other girls I have bred. There have been a few that I just didnt get around to doing the full testing and honestly was very very comfortable with their health that I didnt make it a priority. I should have but didnt. Every dog or bitch we breed gets a full checkup and blood panel, but not always the x-rays, eye exams or urinalysis.

Thats just what we do... everyone is different.

I received an email update from Director, Richard Boddington, about The Dogfather movie. Currently all of the editing has been completed and it is in LA having the sound track made. Richard has a sales promo out and it is being marketed to all of the big film companies (Disney is set to see it in January). Richard is very pleased with how it turned out--in his words, "It turned out just great! It's a very funny, great looking family film that I know you will be proud of."

I was able to get some fun photos of our film shoot that I thought you'd enjoy seeing (sharing with Richard's permission happy.gif Here's our cast/crew photo from our "wrap" (a few of the actors aren't in the photo as they were wrapped a couple days prior) This was taken in front of the main set--the "Franks Family home" from the movie...

DogfatherCastCrew_l

This is a photo that was taken on set as a mock poster for the movie, with "Sonny" (Gabe) and "Don Tazio" (Gerry Mendicino). DOP (Director of Photography) Denis Maloney had the scene lit in classic "Godfather" style. Being on set that day was pretty funny...looked like a mafia convention with all of the "Dons" wandering around!

Richard posted this photo of "lead dog, Gabe, offering technical advice to cameraman, Stephen Whitehead"...

A shot showing the camera & dolly on track during filming...

Me on set handling Speedo, who did most of the running scenes. Speedo was bred by Jan Lewis & is actually related to Gabe so he made a great double! Being younger he wasn't as developed in head/chest and didn't overheat as easily. He was also a real "lover" and did some of the snuggling scenes that Gabe wasn't too crazy about ("I HARDLY know you and you want to get 'personal' with me?!!" LOL!)...

Brian (Chris Parnell) & Josh (William Cuddy) Franks on set with Sonny (Gabe)...

...that boy LOVED running! He did most of the running scenes and was like a wild horse to hold still until it was his time to go! (you can see me hanging on to him!) He was so funny, because sometimes he knew the GENERAL direction to run, but he'd get "lost" and race off to the side! He's spending his days putting up with Gabe's son, Sonny, now--who Bonnie also bought to raise up for doubles for the Dogfather sequels along with Speedo. He's so patient with him and let's him chew on him and be obnoxious, until he's had enough, then he'll hold him until he settles down and finally let him go!

Effective January 1, 2010 - A Ramp MUST be
available to judges (at their discretion) for examination of
low, heavy-set breeds in accordance with CKC Conformation

I just noticed it on the Premium list for a show I was thinking about entering...wonder if that means Bulldogs will be shown on ramps now?

Just the end of Oct. I was at a show where the Mincey's were judging and Marilyn called for the ramp, they brought out this archaic ramp that was almost as high as a grooming table and steep! I trained my girl on it early the next morning and she was able to do it but I do believe the judges are being instructed to ask for it especially if the numbers warrant it. The ramp was called for all that weekend! Hope that it does become permanent.

Did you watch "Pedigreed Dogs Exposed" on BBC last night???

by Denise (Login sovbulls)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

Let's hear it for health testing. Basically what I gleaned from the show was that "they" want the Kennel Club to outlaw inbreeding (father/daughter, mother/son, etc). You can't say that's wrong, but the Kennel Club adamantly refuses. The interviewer asked the Kennel Club man if he would have a baby with his daughter. He said that was ridiculous, dogs were different than people.

"They" also want dogs with serious health defects to be banned from showing and from being bred. One example was a beautiful Pug. Apparently there are 10,000 pugs in the UK with only a total of 50 dogs in their pedigrees. 50 dogs all the same! Less than the endangered Giant Pandas. This beautiful pug was a pet and not being shown but was Crufts eligible. He had a crooked spine, entropion, and several other serious defects.

Then there was the Cavalier. The Cavaliers apparently have a very serious brain problem called syringomyelia. Very painful, hereditary, fatal disease. This particular Cavalier tested positive on his MRI for this disease. He was shown at their National Speciality and went BOB. After his diagnosis he sired another 26 litters. All of these puppies will be positive for the disease. When his owner was asked about this she denied the dog was sick. It's enough to make you sick.

Lastly the Pekingese. BIS winner at Crufts in I think 2003. Had his soft palate corrected surgically and had to sit on an ice pack for his BIS picture. Wonderful....I wonder how many litters he sired?

You get the gist of the program if you did not see it. I can't disagree with what they want.

I don't have a problem with banning inbreeding or banning from breeding/showing any dog with serious hereditary defects. The program is well worth watching. Sorry for the long post.

True, dogs with issues should not be bred.

Here is the problem;

The program presented all breeders in the same light.
The Kennel Club in England, as s result of this show CHANGED the bulldog standard.. Did not do anything to require health testing, just changed the standard.

Inbreeding is not the problem, inbreeding unhealthy dogs is, besides, no one really breeds that tight over and over again (say father daughter or siblings).

The problem is...

by Heather (Login hezzbullies)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

Of course I agree that dogs with genetic problems should not be bred. But that opens another problem. Who is going to oversee that every dog bred has a clean bill of health. That isn't the job of the AKC, it is the job of the two breeders breeding the dogs.

Additionally, if AKC would get involved in trying to manage the wellness of the breeding stock, we would no longer see the puppy classes at shows. A pup that achieves his/her championship at 9-11 months of age may not show any problems at that point. The point of shows is to evaluate your BREEDING stock, so therefore the AKC would have to decide on an age that would be safe to award a dog his/her chamionship, an age that most defects would by that time be detectable. In order to enter your dog into a show, you would have to provide proof of health certificates, etc. No thanks.

So, I think that this topic, is way beyond the scope of AKC and is firmly on the shoulders of responsible breeders. I don't think that the answer is to change bred standard.

It is our responsibility as breeders...

by (Login wardbull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

to breed only healthy, sound dogs with good temperments! If you have a dog that has health issues or bad temperments and you breed him or her you have contributed to the problems we face today!
I know it is hard, we have eliminated very nice dogs from our breeding programs because of health issues. You simply cant as Responsible Breeders do anything less...The sooner we all start this practice the sooner these AR's Extremists will have to back off or find another area to go after!!!
As far as testing goes, if we all test...wont the backyard and puppy mill breeders follow suit so they arent at a competitive disadvantage! This would be a wonderful thing!! Some breeds have mandatory testing of there dogs, I dont think this is a bad idea. It is one that will take time to implement.
We have to see this paradigm shift and recognize that we have to adapt or parish!!!

Re: It is our responsibility as breeders...

2 years to barely get 100 trachea x rays, even with a $50 rebate and multiple begs and pleads... I'm not too optomistic.

When it all hits the fan and you wonder what can be done, don't say you were not informed enough to prepare.

Start now. If your dogs pass for patella, heart and trachea, great. If you are inclined, go for hips, elbows, eyes, thyroid and the DNA test for stones.

If they don't pass? Discuss the degree of the problem with your vet. A mild patella luxation might not ever be symptomatic and if you want to breed that dog, insist on perfect knees from the mate of choice.

Common sense.

Bad heart? Would you want to breed that anyway? Nothing worse than a bitch dying full of puppies. A thorough heart check eliminates that issue as a contributing factor.
Hypoplaaric trachea? Same thing.

One thing that is not required of dog breeders is basic knowledge of animal husbandry. Being ignorant is not an excuse.
You choose to breed dogs, choose to be a great breeder, not just a producer of more and more puppies.

Oh!! And get autopsies on any young dog that dies, especially if that dog has offspring!!

Excellence has many meanings. Excellent show dogs pass health tests all the time. Do not think for one minute that you have to give up conformation to pass health tests. This is an old arguement that makes zero sense to me.

Took the words right out of my mouth! I have been a preacher for health testing forever and now more than ever we need to distinguish ourselves from those that have bulldogs to those that raise and produce healthy, correct bulldogs! That BBC show aired many months ago overseas with a wide audience and creating many two sided debates....it has now hit a world stage....now it is time for a truly educated person to show the real differences between puppy producers and the effort that many of us are putting into quality stock. Our breed is one of the most expensive breeds, therefore, one of the most exploited and now graduated to one of the most scrutinized. Would our pups be as expensive if c-sections weren't the accepted delivery and again would the cost be so dear if we didnt have to AI? Now I am not going to the extremes to say that we should push for all free whelpers and all natural breedings, but we should be looking into the viability of those options and what it would take to make them more possible. We need to prove to the world that bulldogs are not just a man made man kept breed. The true test of any breed is if they would be able to sustain a population without the aid of man and our need to selectively breed. Would our bullies go extinct? I believe that we are making such drastic changes by leaps and bounds and with programming like this, it will accelerate our need to prove them wrong. Like has been said earlier...don't wait for mandatory testing to be instituted and a possibility of changing or excusing our breed, take the initiative to make a difference. Remember that everything you produce is now somebody else's family member....you have the chance to possibly curb much heartache if you detect a problem before passing it on to an entire litter. We all need to be responsible. Remember, you have the right to deny somebody access to your stock if they don't meet the health criteria of your own stock. Always use the 'dont tell me show me' mantra when breeding.

I just read somethng that made me so mad!

by Cathy (Login CathyandAudrey)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

and it's along the lines of the post about breeding dogs. This was an article about a book written by an ex-British vet and the horrible veterinary industry, and of course breeding purebred dogs. I have posted this on the Show forum first beacuse I would really love to hear from people in the world of showing and breeding purebred dogs. Are there REALLY a majority of dog breeders who don;t care about health as much as physical appearance? Is it TRULY the norm to breed dogs with serious health problems as long as they have good breed conformatin? I am really that naive to think that MOST breeders do so because they truly LOVE the breed they work with? and when one of their dogs is proven to have a serious congenital and hereditary health problems it saddens them because they love that dog? and they won't continue to breed that dog so as not to pass along those health problems? I just don't understand what the ultimate goal of these people is. To halt all veterinary research beacuse it could possibly cause an animal more pain? To no longer control breeding of dogs, at all? So we just won't have domestic dogs anymore? Because to even think that it would be best to let dogs just mate with whomever happens to cross their path while in heat is too stupid for even PETA to support. Ijust do NOT understand at all what it is they are trying to accomplish with dogs?

Good health and good conformation go hand in hand. If show dogs were walking cripples on death's door, would we be proud to show them?
Anwer is no, of course not.

Are there health problems in dogs? Yes. In every animal, including people, on this planet? Yes.

Are people ignorant in their breeding practices? Yes.

Are all purebred dogs doomed? No.

Our breed has been around an awfully long time in it's current form. The arguements about them and their health and conformation are as old as the breed. They are not at some "end of days" as some animal rightists would have you believe and the immediate change to their conformation won't improve anything.

Go visit our health page to see a gallery of health tested champions, quite a few of which are line and even inbred.
http://bcahealth.homestead.com/chicgallery.html

Inbreeding does not cause problems. Any dog, regardless of breeding system, can be born with a problem, even mixed breeds. Inbreeding health issues is a stupid thing to do, obviously. If you line or inbreed proven healthy dogs, diseases will not spontaniously appear because of it. If a condition crops up, you do not breed those dogs again. Simple.

It is all propaganda.

HOW can purebred dogs survive a few hundred years if they were truly so unhealthy? I guess the argument could be made that breeders just breed them young and produce enough offspring to off set the losses and ensure continuance, but is this really happening?

it is difficiult to say if it is more widespread. The internet opened up a world of imformation that we were previously unaware of.

The fact that there are so many retail and internet outlets now available to purchse dogs and there is no way to police this sort of thing, I am sure there is an uprise in problems already associated with some dogs.

Everyone wants a bulldog these days. Many people start off a call to me with "I am aware that they have allot of health problems but I want one anyway"..

All this does in encourage people to breed anything to get puppies.

If the common call was "I want to buy a puppy whose parents were health tested for "x" "y" and "z" maybe people would stop and think and test before they bred.

Can't cure stupid..but you can educate ignorant.

I agree that the demand for bulldogs does create opportunities for people to breed them hoping to make easy money. I hope when they discover how much money it costs to produce puppies and how much time it takes to raise them they won't attempt it for very long. These people aren't showing these dogs though, and I wonder why show dogs/breeders are so frequently attacked instead of breeders like these?

Guilt by association

by Melina (Login MelinaJ)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

We all get lumped in together by the folks who don't know the difference. They see the cute little puppy mill pup at the mall pet store, they see the show dog on TV, they don't understand the difference. And usually, the pet store pup is more expensive. I am my club's contact and get lots of inquiries about puppies. Many have done their homework and got my name from BCA or AKC. Some just want a pup, quick and cheap. They don't want to get educated and any attempt on my part is met with indifference or anger. I always thank those who are interested in healthy pups from reputable breeders, but there are always those who are just looking for a couple of dogs to breed and make a quick profit. Those are the ones who get a quick reply of "Sorry, I don't know of any available at the moment."

been said but the harsh reality is when we turn those buyers down to protect our dogs they pick up the phone and call the next breeder on their list. The ones that advertise on craig's list or the pennysaver or heck even your local newspaper. When we can limit that type of breeders exposure then maybe we can change public perception.

It is frustration to say the least.

worst enemy sometimes

by (Login jollimore)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

I was recently to Dr. Battaglia's seminar and he told a story of his daughter trying to buy a purebred dog. She couldn't get past the interviews and no one would sell her a dog! It is cases like this where good people can't answer all the questions to the seller's liking and they are refused for whatever reason. These people then go and buy from the pet store or the puppy miller and buy unhealthy dogs and it's the reputable breeders that take the heat for it. (In Dr. Battaglia's case, he was able to get his daughter a dog from a reputable breeder but because of who he was.

I also know that reputable breeders don't breed hundreds of dogs each year so they can be choosy where they place their dogs. Tough one.

On one side I see Cherokee Legend Pretty Boy, and the other side I see Heatherbull Bounty's Frigate in Buddy and Brothers pedigree. Their breeder advertizes on the internet, and newspapers. Some of the newspapers are out of state. I'm glad he does, or how would I have met him? I had to make up my own mind if his pups were to my standard or not. Some little rich girl, doctors daughter, may lose interest in the pup, maybe that is what the breeders saw. My breeder asked a lot of questions, and I guess I had the right answers. Mine are pets I guess unless I can get involved in the BCA of Indiana, in the future. I carry insurance, and had them checked by a "Bulldog vet." so I'm not gonna worry over a TV show cause it's all about ratings, I believe the producers could care less about the dogs. Well Here's Buddy, he has a plastic grocerybag cornered in ther next yard. I will agree a lot of work should be done looking for a pup. Sorry window was fogged a little.

Here we go. READ THIS

by (Login hugobull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Read this!! Don't skip it because it is one of those preachy health posts.

The Today Show just interviewed a British Professor somehow affiliated with Penn. The BBC PEDIGREE DOGS EXPOSED is airing tonight and the Today Show gave a stage to this a anti breeding fellow.

The interviewer finished up with this question;
(adlibbing)

So, is dog breeding institutionalized cruelty?

Response, "Yes"

Like I have been saying, in time we will likely be fighting legislation claiming that breeding bulldogs (and many breeds) is cruel. When you have professors of veterinary medicine agreeing with that, it is going to be hard to win.

Health testing is NOT a bad idea kids. It might be the only leg we have to stand on if this nightmare continues.

I just watched the interview. Here we go again. You're right, it's just a matter of time before we are considered criminal and very un-politically correct because we want to have a purebred animal. And the AKC didn't really help with it's ambiguous statement. It's up to us as individuals and breed clubs to educate the public about health testing, temperment testing, etc. Interesting that NBC, which shows the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving Day would trumpet this one-sided and irrational view.

The shame in all this is the irresponsible "blanket" statement

by DarynD (Login DarynD)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

If you listen to what the story is about, I believe that most, if not all, the breeders on this board and others would agree that what is being said in the video piece is horrific and something we try to fight against and warn the general public about everyday(i.e - breeding a female to death and in-breeding vs. line-breeding, health and temperament vs. look). Not having an AKC representation sitting there was a travesty.

This "Doctor" lumping us in with puppy-mills and backyard breeders and calling breeding "institutional cruelty" is ludicrous. I agree about testing as well as tightening AKC registration standards (let's face it, some of what he said was true)

Obviously having the AKC, parent clubs and local clubs is the way to go. We have to be able to unequivocally separate ourselves from the puppy-mills and backyard breeders that this piece is using to label us all!

Not meant to be abrupt or confrontational in anyway...just my opinion.

I have a big time issue with anyone dictating to me whether or not I can in or line breed. And that might be next.

A good many of these horror story dogs are NOT inbred or even linebred and a few of my (and others) highly health tested dogs are.

In breeding in and of itself does not create the problems, bad breeding selection does.

If breeders are not paying attention to this then they should. Health and Temperment should be top priority.

Unfortunately the story won't portray or provide stats on who the breeders are of these purebred dogs (ie puppy mill, BYB vs reputable breeders). The story makes it sound like the only breeders of purebred dogs are the show breeders and that show breeders only breed for the look.

I don't think I can watch the show. I was to mad after the Today show interview.

What is the perfect dog anyway? Will we end up with a generic dog that apparently has no health issues? Ya right!!!

I have bulldogs because we match.happy.gif

I don't want to come home after a long day of work and go for a 5km run, so I got a bulldog.
I don't want to deal with my dog protecting my property to the point of possibly biting a friend or a neighbor, so I got a bulldog.
I don't want a dog to jump in every mud puddle he sees, so I got a bulldog
I don't want to deal with long hair that needs continual grooming, so I got a bulldog.
I don't want a dog that chases cars, cats, bicycles etc., so I got a bulldog.
I don't want a dog that could counter surf, so I got a bulldog.
I don't want a dog that catches a scent and runs away from home, so I got a bulldog.

All I wanted is a dog that is gentle, cuddly, funny, sensitive, and to be my best friend.

I have bulldogs now that are 11, 10, 9, 3, and a pup. The only suffering I see is when I don't let them up on the living room furniture. (they are allowed on the recroom sofas wink.gif I am not totally cruel.happy.gif

I have owned and loved other breeds of dogs but my "doggie soul mate" is the bulldog and I will protect it as long as I have a breath in me.happy.gif

a sad message.....

by (Login norcalErica)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

just received this email from Shane Twamley.... a sad message....

I just spoke to the director of events for Eukanuba who sadly informed me that the bulldog that was coming from Venezuela for the WORLD CHALLENGE died in their efforts to get here.
If there are new people out there who are unaware of the dangers of flying a bulldog, I hope this will be a reminder that our bullies can have difficulty breathing and should not be shipped by plane unless they are flown in pressurized cabins. Even then, some bulldogs may get stressed by a new environment as they sometimes do even with ground transportation. Our bulldogs are innocents that look to us for their protection so it is always best to err on the side of caution, as sadly, there are too many that have learned this the hard way.
Let's hope that the rest of the holidays are happy and healthy for all dogs and their owners.

I am sure you are all aware what happened when we were trying to bring Calibra Kryptonite (Oliver) from England.....unfortunately the outcome was grave. What wasnt known is that we tried on several occasions to purchase space in the cabin (including buying several seats) to which no airline would allow. Unfortunatly, it was not the dog's fault as per the post mortem. I know that another Calibra dog has recently arrived here in Canada. This time, based on the Oliver experience, they used a boat. It took awhile, but the dog arrived safe and sound happy.gif Dont forget about this option people, it is pretty old fashioned, but an option none the less.

I know exactly what these people are going through and would never wish that sort of sadness and regret on anyone. My deepest sympathies on the loss of such a lovely dog.

Flattened out her topline and looks way too straight. Will take more in a couple of weeks. Now I know how the rest of you feel trying to stack a pup.LOL

I thought if a pup had a dip at this age it would be over exaggerated? I always look at there top lines at this age when their head is down in a dish of food, not stacked? anyway I like her allot!!

Not worried about it being flat but its sloping down. She is so young her legs are spread apart and having a hard time keeping them under her. Tough to get a good stack pic at this age. For a little girl she has a ton of attitude.LOL

Honey is still at the ER, she is on a tube and vent. She is on Baytril, oxygen and fluids.

Honey was out side going potty like a good little girl, she is almost potty trained. She came back in the house (she was not unsupervised at all) came up the 2 steps with help from Grandma. She walked to the carpet heaved a few times and layed down. Mom picked her up and she noticed her gums were gray, she rushed her to the clossest vet who put her on IV and tubed her and the vet drove her to the emergency clinic.

I got off my flight to my phone rining off the hook with 2 bulldoggers trying to get a hold of me and my mom. Cathy picked me up and drove me to the ER. I called my vet at home and he told me what he would do, it was the same that i told the ER vet to do. So we all are on the same page. They will try and take her off the tube and vent at about 11 and see how she does.

Please keep her in your prayers, she is just 9 weeks tomorrow.

When I told him we wanted to see his body I asked if the wife was there. (didn't want to get us or him in trouble) He said yes and he'd introduce us the next day but it didn't happen. Was wondering if he was fibbing since he didn't. LOL

and yup..I've already got my dozen hunks to look at for next year.

Bulldog tail types

This is my little guy Buddy, he's 8 months now. Here is a pic of him as a little pup showing his tail. I wonder if his tail is acceptable, as I read the standard, and I still don't understand.

Thanks

Re: Bulldog tail types

Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Do you want to show her?
Many, many bulldogs showing now have tails that are "incorrect" according to the standard, yours included. It does not stop anyone from showing or breeding those tails. Some people work hard to correct those tails through breeding, other people take a different point of view and consider tails completely inconsequential.
There are only two, possibly three "unacceptables" in showing a bulldog; a male that does not have two testicles, Dudley coloring and the debateable black coloring.

Ward,
I just wanted to thank you for taking time to respond about my little guy, Buddy. That pic was in July I think. What I'm saying is, the breeder didn't mention ear gluing and I was a little late getting started. Here is a pic of Buddy today. He's over 40lbs, and napping in the pups carrier. I know nothing but what I read so any suggestion is welcomed. His Brother, [Brother is his call name] has his ears glued now, and has to play through the fence of his x-pen to keep them glued

1.) We've posted a total of 21 - yep TWENTY ONE - videos from the BCA Nationals week to YouTube. That is about 3 1/2 hours of edited video content of your shows on the Internet for everyone to see WORLDWIDE!! We also made a custom playlist for Bulldogs to make it easier for folks to find the videos. Again, the URL: http://www.YouTube.com/ShowDogVideoPros

2.) We're the only dog show video company that offers video services FREE to the club, and that offers so much FREE content to the world wide web. However, we do rely on sales of video DVDs to stay in business. We'd be happy to accept additional orders from your fancy. SO, we've decided to extend our SHOW DISCOUNT pricing and FREE shipping and handling for another week!! Folks need to get their orders in ASAP, though, because the prices will go up thereafter. For orders:http://www.showdogvideopros.com/Bulldog.html

We're beginning to get "Christmas" and Holiday orders. For folks like us in the dog show world, these video DVDs are tremendous gifts. Not only are they pleasing to watch, but they are crammed packed full of breeding and pedigree information. They are a tremendous resource for serious breeders to study stud dogs, brood bitches and their get.

give to HSUS. Please please please.

Please send this article

to everyone on your friends and families lists.

And encourage them to GIVE LOCALLY to small rescue and breed groups and independent humane societies or shelters. the people who actually care for animals, and can't afford National advertising campaigns!

try A LOT of the money meant for needy pets

by (Login JenniferJoseph)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

local humane societies scrimp and scrounge but still can't get the message out that HSUS does NOT act as some sort of umbrella org that funds them. In fact, if a local shelter wants HSUS' help, they will be charged a fee

Local Humane http://localhumane.org/news/ is a grass roots effort by small, local shelters to get the word out.

Every year, every day, people donate to HSUS and ASPCA thinking the money will somehow go to help local pets. I see HSUS stickers on cars here while the local HS is trying desperately to stay afloat. And it is caring for two of the dogs from the same bust that rescued Fay!

In ASPCA's case, some of the money will go to animals in their NYC shelter, but much will go to maintaining their massive mail and TV campaigns for more funds.
HSUS spends 80% of it's donations just to power it's media and fund raising machines and maintain facilities, which do NOT include shelters. (HSUS runs one sanctuary, one, but no adoption facilities)

By contrast, give to local shelters or breed rescues and 90-100% will go straight to help pets and keep your local rescue insured and in existence.

I received an email from a friend in New York. It was a forward from someone else asking that people give to HSUS as a Christmas donation to help pets. I responded to the almost 50 people who were forwarded the email and advised them of the true HSUS. I also asked that they give local. Hope it stopped a few from making a mistake.
