What You Can Do To Help
Chicago is facing city wide MSN. As with California, it will not stay there but spread. Please take a few minutes to help dog owners in Chicago and PASS THE WORD
FWD from AASD:
It is very important for dog owners to take action before Tuesday’s committee meeting. This ordinance can be stopped if strong opposition arises from every neighborhood in Chicago, and from all segments of the dog community.
Please contact local organizers to coordinate. They are Karen Perry (ouilmette4@sbcglobal.net) and Michele Smith (msmith@cmscrescue.com).
Next, please contact your friends and members and officers of any clubs or organizations you belong to that can help. These include dog clubs, sportsmen’s clubs, farmers’ groups and firearms rights organizations. Hunters, farmers and firearms enthusiasts know that these kinds of laws stem from an animal rights groups that also want to eliminate hunting, raising animals for food and the right to keep and bear arms.
It is very important to contact members of the City Council committee before Tuesday. Letters sent by surface mail are the most effective, followed by faxes and phone calls. Emails are the least effective. Even if they are brief, personal letters are much more effective than form letters.
Here is a link to City Council Committees: http://www.chicityclerk.com/standingcommettee.php. Tuesday’s meeting will involve both the Committee on Finance and the Committee on License and Consumer Protection. This web page gives links to each committee member.
The American Sporting Dog Alliance represents owners, hobby breeders and professionals who work with breeds of dogs that are used for hunting. We are a grassroots movement working to protect the rights of dog owners, and to assure that the traditional relationships between dogs and humans maintains its rightful place in American society and life. Please visit us on the web at http://www.americansportingdogalliance.org or contact us at asda@csonline.net.
The American Sporting Dog Alliance also needs your help so that we can continue to work to protect the rights of dog owners. Your membership, participation and support are truly essential to the success of our mission. We are funded solely by the donations of our members, and maintain strict independence.

CH Dog Gones Electrostatic Discharge went Best of Breed in Wisconsin Friday afternoon and LuLu who needs majors to finish went Reserve Winners Bitch--again. Sorry this proud Mom doesn't know the rest of the results. Way to go , Rach!!
Today Teaser passed the OFA Patella test, which was extremely easy took a matter of two minutes. This test is the first of many I will be doing as a proactive approach prior to breeding. The next series entails many x-rays spine, elbows, trachea and hips then CHIC for the heart.
they are busy with the budget, don't assume they will look this up or someone else will call them about it!
--- please cross post ---
Spread the word! The senators are in Sacramento today working on the
budget. Let them know today that the state Department of Finance Bill
Analysis opposes AB 1634 because the bill would increase costs to the
state budget. Tell the senators that in the face of a $15 billion
budget deficit, California cannot afford to lay off more teachers or
cut more vital services in order to pay for something like AB 1634.
Excerpts from the Department of Finance's Bill Analysis of AB 1634:
"Requiring the owners of dogs and cats to pay increased fines and to
pay for spaying and neutering procedures, regardless of whether the
animal was impounded or not, may result in more animals being
abandoned or surrendered. Should this occur and the animals are held
by an animal control agency, the result would be an increase in the
General Fund costs of the existing Animal Adoption mandate, which
currently costs more than $20 million annually to reimburse local
agencies for euthanizing certain animals held for a specified period
of time."
"The Department of Finance is opposed to this measure because by
increasing costs for an existing state mandated local program, it
would result in General Fund costs that are not included in the
2008-09 Budget Bill."
"Although the intent of this bill may be to decrease the population of
homeless dogs and cats, an unfortunate result of the bill may actually
be the opposite. First, local animal shelters or other
agencies that impound animals will no longer receive fines for each
additional "occurrence" because upon the third occurrence for dogs or
the second occurrence for cats, the animal must be altered and no
additional fines may be charged. Most likely, the shelter will pay the
cost for this procedure up-front and be reimbursed upon
retrieval of the animal by its owner. We estimate the cost of spaying
or neutering a dog or cat ranges from $50-$200 depending on whether a
veterinarian donates their time to the shelter (only expense being
equipment and supplies) or the shelter contracts with a veterinarian
for services. If an owner cannot or chooses not to reimburse the
shelter for the cost to spay or neuter their pet and instead chooses
to surrender their pet, then the shelter will not be reimbursed for
that cost. This bill may drive up the rate of surrender and
the rate of euthanasia, increasing the costs of the existing mandate.
"This bill is also unclear in its definition of the term "complaint."
The bill states that the term shall not include an allegation of
excessive noise or barking but also states that, in the case of dogs
for example, a complaint also means any other provision of state law
that relates to dogs, or a local animal control ordinance. Many local
animal control ordinances deal with noises that animals make such as
barking, creating the potential for a conflict within the definition
of the term "complaint" in this bill. The intent of this bill may have
been to define complaint to include observation by an official;
however, there is concern that a complaint may be unsubstantiated. If
a complaint is unsubstantiated, an official may still come to an
owner's home to investigate the complaint. Non-impounded dogs and cats
would be subject to the same civil penalties and spay and neuter
requirements as impounded animals unless proof of the animals already
being spayed or neutered can be provided within 14 days."
Department of Finance is referring to increases in mandated costs that
the state must reimburse local governments due to the 1998 Hayden Act,
which mandates minimum hold times for animals in shelters. AB 1634
need not result in any new mandate in order to trigger higher Hayden
Act reimbursements. The NAIA, Save Our Dogs, CDOC, and other groups
have made this same point.
As of this morning, my Pug bitch client is coughing. Her owner is my vet and she's aware and I have informed my Chihuahua, Cairn Terrier, Frenchie and Bulldog clients that this is going on and that we won't be going to the dog show this weekend. They are now going to be out entry fees, possible Championship points, possible breed points and possible all-breed points. They will possibly be out veterinary fees.
I just sent out a mass email to everybody I know from different breeds and handlers that were at that show. If you didn't receive the email and you need more information, contact me - 206.356.4768.

I'm very sorry your client is sick. I wish more people would put the health and welfare of their dogs above their greed for points. I wish the Pug and speedy recovery and I hope none of your other dogs get sick. I know you're very worried about your seniors.
I received this from another list. In it a quote is given from Mancuso that clearly shows they intend to use this bill to force sterilization of all CA pets NO EXCEPTIONS allowed. Get this across to your legislators.
I am not going to post the entire letter, but in her latest email, Judie Mancuso (creator of AB 1634) clearly states AB 1634 REMAINS STRONG.
Here is a direct quote: "Some people have incorrectly labeled AB 1634 as a weakened bill. I have met with analysts and Legislators for the last month and believe me, AB 1634 is still a mandatory spay and neuter bill and will still make a big difference for animals and shelter workers. We have built this movement together, we will continue to work for animals together in the future and I thank each and every one of you for your continued support of this most important cause."
She is asking her supporters to meet with Senators, give personal stories, etc-- send them a personal message instead of a form letter.
Please feel free to forward this especially to anyone who believes that because AB 1634 was gutted and amended there is no need to oppose this anymore or that since it is a complaint driven bill there is no need to worry. With enough of a coordinated effort by overly zealous, passionate extremists none of us is safe against bogus, anonymous complaints if AB 1634 passes.

I've been told Millie Watkins took WD and the person I spoke to didn't know who took bitch and Kathy Harris I think took Breed. Someone please confirm or post better results......I wish I was there......

Even if your Senator is Republican, let them know AB1634 is unacceptable.
The good news is that the Senate Judiciary may now be looking at the bill before it can go for a vote. BUT we are slacking off this round and that may be disaterous. PLEASE WRITE CALL FAX AND VISIT, now is NOT the time to leave it up to some one else
FWD from someone in the trenches...
I just received news of a disturbing telephone conversation, this time between a constituent and a Republican Senator. The Senator was happy to discuss AB 1634 but commented that she didn’t think there was much opposition to this version of the bill because her office had only had “a handful of letters” and a couple of calls. I fear the plan to leave the Republican lawmakers alone might backfire on us if we don’t make sure they understand our position on this proposal.
Again, I suggest that everyone write letters of opposition to Republican Senators and thank them for their continued support and ask them to please be sure and show up for any votes so that their “No” can be counted.
Please forward this message to all your contacts among the opposition.
BTW that was pretty much the same response I have recieved from Devin Nunez on this subject..he says in my area there are more for the bill than against..we went to school together and were both very involved in FFA and 4H so at least i have some other way of getting my voice heard even if its through the back door

Northern California Bulldog Rescue
has really been rackin' 'em up lately and could give us some SERIOUS competition. There are only about 5 dogs who are really in the running...and a couple who could really put up a fight. I think we're sitting pretty good for making the semi-finals, but need to broaden our base if we want to pull off winning the category! (I think if we DO win our category, we'll be in a good spot for taking the whole thing ) Keep up da good work, Team!
not sure how these things work, but I wondered about wireless & how they worked as far as IP addys You can refresh & vote again from a regular 'puter, but it won't count.
Im not posting this at anyone specific, just general. If you think you see a sick dog at a show, you can always request a vet check or a rep to have the dog evaluated. For any breed as most shows have several different breeds in attendance.
Dogs show signs of stress several different ways, I know Bosco gets diarrhea when he travels (he doesnt go much) Not that he has a bacterial or viral illness. Other dogs pant, vomit, pee all ways that infections or viruses can be trasmitted.
In medicine, transmission is the passing of a disease from an infected individual or group to a previously uninfected individual or group. The microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) that cause disease may be transmitted from one person to another by one or more of the following means:
droplet contact - coughing or sneezing on another person
direct physical contact - touching an infected person, including sexual contact
indirect contact - usually by touching soil contamination or a contaminated surface
airborne transmission - if the microorganism can remain in the air for long periods
fecal-oral transmission - usually from contaminated food or water sources
vector borne transmission - carried by insects or other animals
Microorganisms vary widely in the length of time that they can survive outside the human body, and so vary in how they are transmitted.

[edit] Horizontal and vertical
Disease can be transmitted in two ways:
Horizontal disease transmission – from one individual to another in the same generation (peers in the same age group).[1] Horizontal transmission can occur by either direct contact (licking, touching, biting), or indirect contact (vectors or fomites that allow the transmission of disease without physical contact).[2]
Vertical disease transmission – passing a disease causing agent vertically from parent to offspring. Typically the mother transmits the disease by means of bodily fluid, and sometimes breast milk.[1]
[edit] Transmission, symptoms and survival
In order to survive, microorganisms must have a way to be transmitted from one host to another. Infectious agents are generally specialized for a particular method of transmission. Taking an example from the respiratory route, from an evolutionary perspective a virus or bacteria that causes its host to develop coughing and sneezing symptoms has a great survival advantage - it is much more likely to be ejected from one host and carried to another. This is also the reason that many microorganisms cause diarrhea
[edit] Locus
In transmission, a locus is the point on the body where a pathogen enters.
In droplet contact and other airborne transmission it is generally the respiratory system
In direct physical and indirect contact it is generally through a wound in the skin or through a mucous membrane
In fecal-oral transmission, it is through the mouth.
In vector borne transmission, it is at the bite or sting of the vector.
[edit] Routes of Transmission
[edit] Droplet Contact
Microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) that cause disease may be transmitted from one person to another by aerosols created when a patient sneezes or coughsAlso known as the respiratory route, it is a typical mode of transmission among many infectious agents. If an infected person coughs or sneezes on another person the microorganisms, suspended in warm, moist droplets, may enter the body through the nose, mouth or eye surfaces. Diseases that are commonly spread by coughing or sneezing include (at least):
[edit] Fecal-Oral Transmission
Direct contact is rare in this route, for humans at least. More common are the indirect routes; foodstuffs or water become contaminated (by people not washing their hands before preparing food, or untreated sewage being released into a drinking water supply) and the people who eat and drink them become infected. In developing countries most sewage is discharged into the environment or on cropland as of 2006; even in developed countries there are periodic system failures resulting in a sanitary sewer overflow. This is the typical mode of transmission for the infectious agents of (at least):
Cholera
Hepatitis A
Polio
Rotavirus
Salmonellosis
[edit] Sexual Transmission
This refers to any disease that can be caught during sexual activity with another person, including vaginal or anal sex or (less commonly) through oral sex (see below). Transmission is either directly between surfaces in contact during intercourse (the usual route for bacterial infections and those infections causing sores) or from secretions (semen or the fluid secreted by the excited female) which carry infectious agents that get into the partner's blood stream through tiny tears in the penis, vagina or rectum (this is a more usual route for viruses). In this second case, anal sex is considerably more hazardous since penis opens more tears in the rectum than the vagina, as the vagina is stretchier and more accommodating.
Some diseases transmissible by the sexual route include (at least):
HIV/AIDS
Chlamydia
Genital warts
Gonorrhea
Hepatitis B
Syphilis
[edit] Oral Sexual Transmission
Sexually Transmitted Diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B are thought to not normally be transmitted through mouth-to-mouth contact, although it is possible to transmit some STDs between the genitals and the mouth, during oral sex. In the case of HIV this possibility has been established. It is also responsible for the increased incidence of herpes simplex virus 1 (which is usually responsible for oral infections) in genital infections and the increased incidence of the type 2 virus (more common genitally) in oral infections.
[edit] Oral Transmission
Diseases that are transmitted primarily by oral means may be caught through direct oral contact such as kissing, or by indirect contact such as by sharing a drinking glass or a cigarette.
Diseases that are known to be transmissible by kissing or by other direct or indirect oral contact include all of the diseases listed above as transmissible by droplet contact and also (at least):
Cytomegalovirus infections
Herpes simplex virus (especially HSV-1)
Mononucleosis
(Notice these are all forms of herpes virus.)
[edit] Transmission by Direct Contact
Diseases that can be transmitted by direct contact are called contagious (contagious is not the same as infectious; although all contagious diseases are infectious, not all infectious diseases are contagious). These diseases can also be transmitted by sharing a towel (where the towel is rubbed vigorously on both bodies) or items of clothing in close contact with the body (socks, for example) if they are not washed thoroughly between uses. For this reason, contagious diseases often break out in schools, where towels are shared and personal items of clothing accidentally swapped in the changing rooms.
Some diseases that are transmissible by direct contact include:
Athlete's foot
Impetigo
Syphilis (on rare occasions, if an uninfected person touches a chancre)
Warts
[edit] Vertical Transmission
This is from mother to child, often in utero, as a result of the incidental exchange of bodily fluids (mostly blood) during childbirth or (rarely) through breast milk.
Some diseases that can be transmitted in this way include:
HIV
Hepatitis B
Syphilis
[edit] Iatrogenic Transmission
Transmission due to medical procedures, such as injection or transplantation of infected material.
Some diseases that can be transmitted iatrogenically include:
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease by injection of contaminated human growth hormone.
MRSA infection is often acquired as a result of a stay in hospital
The route of transmission is important to epidemiologists because patterns of contact vary between different populations and different groups of populations depending on socio-economic, cultural and other features. For example, low personal and food hygiene due to the lack of a clean water supply may result in increased transmission of diseases by the fecal-oral route, such as cholera. Differences in incidence of such diseases between different groups can also throw light on the routes of transmission of the disease. For example, if it is noted that polio is more common in cities in underdeveloped countries, without a clean water supply, than in cities with a good plumbing system, we might advance the theory that polio is spread by the fecal-oral route.

the judge goes over what on average a 100 dogs... i now bring wipes and give one to the judge before looking into wilsons mouth, the judged just laughed and wiped his hands, but even for the judges health i would think they would wipe their hands, when i bring my two dogs together to the vet she wipes her hands between the two dogs, it would take two seconds, now no one can be that lazy, so if you ever see a woman handing a wipe to a judge thats me and wilson.....
Well, apparently the PNW wasn’t the only place where sick bulldogs were brought to the show.
This morning…. One of my client dogs started exhibiting symptoms…. Elevated temperature and a green nasal discharge….. I only hope that this is the beginnings of kennel cough and not the canine flu.Thank goodness that Booker has been out for so long now his immune system is iron tight.
I can assure you that the only people to touch my dogs the entire weekend were the judges and I.Since Bulldogs were first in the ring everyday it is not likely that it came from anywhere else.I don’t allow spectators to pet my dogs, ever. Some may think this rude.I really don’t care. When they are not in the ring they are crated under a cover specifically for that reason. They were only at the show during judging (we were staying off show site).
I noticed no dogs at the shows exhibiting any symptoms. However, it is obvious that they were there. So, to those who feel the need to make light of this very serious situation, you might want to stop and think. What if it was you that woke up to green nasal discharge and didn’t know if it would get worse? All because of the selfish behavior of one person who couldn’t see past the chance for glory.
I won’t be going to a show this weekend and can only hope that none of my other dogs become ill….
While the first priority is to call fax write e-mai and visit your senator and as many others as you can, you shold also cc your letters to Arnold
FWD from a friend:
I. Right now the Gov's Capitol office is accepting faxes on AB1634 for the 'Working bill file' at: 916.558.3160
this is the same published fax # from the official website
individuals, veterinary hospitals, pet shops, businesses, humane societies, small groups or kennels should fax their opposition here - and if a business, state approximately how many sales, customers or clients they care for yearly. I would not mention how many kittens or puppies one breeds!
The guv's office is where out of state letters and e-mails need to go
or do you have to be in the show? I would like to make a pledge. Please let me know what I need to do.
I cannot wait until Nov. to see all these wonderful dogs in person.
