Nationals questions ??

by (Login jcramirez24)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Does anyone know if there is a list of the Vendors that are attending this years Nationals?? I have several large items I need to pick up and I'm willing to wait but I want to be sure that the Vendors will be there. My other question is about teenagers! My 16 year old son is interested in going but doesn't want to be the only teen there. Do many teens attend?? He would only miss 2 days of school and I think it would be a great experience since he is just starting to show!

I will be there with my Canine Massage and Bulldog metal and vinyl art, we will also have lighted collars and leashes and Pet Skin Doctor products and some new products from the Company of Animals. I know that the Purple Shamrock will also be there with beautiful figurines and plates and other collectibles. Those are the only two I know of.

BCA Bulldog Standard Discussion Part VI Hindquarters

by (Login HMcDermott)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Hindquarters

Legs
The hind legs should be strong and muscular and longer than the forelegs, as to elevate the loins above the shoulders. Hocks should be slightly bent and well let down, so as to give length and strength from the loins to the hock. The lower leg should be short, straight and strong, with the stifles turned slightly outward and away from the body. The hocks are thereby made to approach each other, and the hind feet to turn outward.

Hind Feet
The feet should be moderate in size, compact and firmly set. Toes compact, well split up, with high knuckles and short stubby nails. The hind feet should be pointed well outward.

Hindquarters

Bulldogsworld Show Forum

During my time in Bulldogs I've seen several changes in overall rears. And I'm referring to degrees of things and numbers of dogs at shows exhibiting these characteristics.

If you go back to the 1998 BCA Nationals tape you will notice lots of straight rears. As in many straight stifles and straight rear legs. A few years later there was a noticeable shift to many over angulated dogs in my opinion.

And of course during these times there plenty of dogs that had very nice rears. Others may disagree and that's ok with me.

One thing I would say is that slight modifications from one generation to another are easier to achieve than wholesale make overs in short times. Know what's behind your dogs when planning breedings. Be cautious about not giving up your strengths when breeding to improve and working towards the perfect bulldog.

Packing for Kansas City ~ question

by (Login doblackburn)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

So, I'm gearing up to pack for Nationals week. We aren't too far away (about an 8 hour drive), but I'm sure I'll have the car packed to gills with crates, grooming stuff, food, dog beds, toys, people clothes, etc. Oh, and a few doggies.

In thinking about what to pack, I wondered what are some of the odd items you all might bring to help get you through the week.

Do you have something in your arsenal of travel goods, either for the dogs or for yourselves, that some of us may find "unusal?" Something you recommend to make hotel living easier? Something that we shouldn't forget?

Just curious....

Thanks!

two king size sheets to cover the bedspreads so if your dog 'happens to' hhehehe...get on the bed it is no problem.

A small cooler is great for having ice on hand and for taking to ringside. Take a few metal bowls for the room. Crate covers are good too. there are fridges in all the rooms, apparently.

How will I meet you??? I can't wait to meet some fellow BDW people...how could we arrange a meetup in the lounge or something??? with a bunch of us? can we post something on here?

Question regarding head & the standard

by Tammy (Login canuckbulldog)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

I think my 1 year old Teela has some really great strong points but she also has weak points like any other dog. I'm new at showing as well as learning more about the breed in general. After doing research on the breed I'm finding that her head is not correct, her nose isn't layed back enough. I look from the front and she looks pretty good, square, good jaw, ears look correct, it's her profile that doesn't look great. Also, what about female vs. male? Teela went up against a puppy in her last show, he was a month younger than her but his head was massive compared to hers. Teela still won which made me feel bettter happy.gif Do you think judges keep in mind that the female bulldog is not as "massive" like the standard calls for?

A massive head does not mean a correct head

by Louise Brinsden (Login brinsdenbulldogs)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

and yes judges should give due consideration to the fact that the bitch is not as a grand as the dog.

Your bitch has lots of virtues, one being that she has a lovely wide lower jaw IMO You are right when you say her layback isn't great but this is a very common fault.

Remember that they are not all perfect. Your bitch does have some good qualities in her head. It is also very square when looking at her face on.

When people look for perfection to the point of overlooking some very good dogs with a flaw or two, they get into trouble, especially when they judge.

I don't accept major type faults well at all. I look for the basic outline to be there. It is only then I nit-pick the best of those with the correct outline to find the winner.

You are describing the 'layback'

by (Login rubydooby)
Bulldogsworld General Forum 1

once the wiskers are shaved...her face will appear more mature. How old is she?

Some lines mature more quickly than others. Not having seen her in person, she appears to have wonderful nostrils, a good jaw and her layback can 'come on' with time. Her eyes are very nice. I think you have a very nice bitch there!

cant say i have ever seen layback come on with time??

by (Premier Login rhianniam)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

is that really possible? Can anyone answer that. Either they have it or they dont is my understand.
Her dogs nose is not set back which creates a nosey appearance. And IMO when a dog has a split nose rope or lack of nose rope this makes the nose placement more visable as well as the shape of the skull and presentation of layback.
But as in any dog, this is just one fault. No dog is perfect and a good judge will look at the overall picture. But for me personally i am big on layback and nose plaement. Its 6 points on the scale of points! One of my favorite features of this breed besides the tail.

the whole face changes, and the layback can and will change. Look at pictures of your bitch from when she was 6 months, 12 months, and then now. Im sure you will see some changes.

Elizabeth showed a pictures a while back of one of her boys, who's head changes alot from puppy to adult.

I dont see changes in Mias at all. IMO the layback was there from the get go, length of skull changed and from this discussion i can now say that she may be shelfy..
so you have seen nose placement change as well? A nose not set back can turn and set back as the head grows? Because a nosey dog doesnt have correct layback, IMP if you do the angle meansurement right where- it should only touch the tip of the nose..the line shouldnt have to make adjustments around a nose that is set out...

BCA Bulldog Standard Discussion Part V Forequarters

by (Login HMcDermott)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Forequarters

Shoulders
The shoulders should be muscular, very heavy, widespread and slanting outward, giving stability and great power.

Forelegs
The forelegs should be short, very stout, straight and muscular, set wide apart, with well developed calves, presenting a bowed outline, but the bones of the leg should not be curved or bandy, nor the feet brought too close together.

Elbows
The elbows should be low and stand well out and loose from the body.

Front Feet
The feet should be moderate in size, compact and firmly set. Toes compact, well split up, with high knuckles and very stubby nails. The front feet may be straight or slightly out-turned.

You simply have to admire our breed for most of its characterictics as compared to the majority of other breeds. The forequarters are no exception to that rule. Bulldog forequarters are not like most other breeds. How do we differ from most breeds?

Fronts

by (Login DonandKim)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

I do like to see a well structured front. The part that trips up alot of people, both exibiting and judging, is the slight angulation part of the standard. I first thought that it meant that the dog should stack up like the straight-sided latter A. But upon alot of observation, it seems that the desired "shape" is more of a rounded top A. This would help accentuate the elbows and the drive during the gait.

Perserverance isn't a long race.
It's a series of short races,

Don,

The only reason why I am asking this is because you are confusing me a bit and I want to make sure the people who are afraid to ask are not confused too.

Slight angulation in relation to front ends?

Also...in trying to understand your point of view, clarify what you mean by "drive during the gait"..

Get any image of an "A" out of your head..reference the pictures in my post..my dad always called tight fronts A-frames!

Thanks!

Shoulders: ...Slanting outwards. sorry, my interpretation of slanting was angulation. I was speaking of the A frames versus what is actually meant in the standard, I believe, was turn of shoulder. A Bulldog that has an A frame has a tight, or pinched gait, as though stepping on eggshells. The drive should be straight, and show ease in movement, but tight shoulders result in a herky jerky motion. Certainly not the standard. The turn of shoulder, that you illustrated, on the other hand, gives the Bulldog a more stable platform to move with. Sorry for the confusion. As we see, there are many ways to interpret. happy.gif

Its been awhile since I've shown another breed and when asked to... I had a hard time setting the dogs up. the width and depth of chest, and legs underneath the other breeds instead of set on the side are what stand out to me. What I have noticed is the lack of upper arm in some bulldogs, and wanting to see the top of the shoulder to the point of shoulder equal distance to the elbow, with allot of for chest in front of that while young. I really like the front outline in my puppy, I can pick her up under her chest and set her down and her feet land perfect without adjusting her. There are other things I'd change but I like her front assembly.

Bulldog has a front unlike any other breed.

If you are confused about the part of the bulldog standard that says"...elbows should be low and stand well out and loose from the body..." statement, compare to the boxer standard; "... The elbows should not press too closely to the chest wall nor stand off visibly from it..."
Bulldogs are not "out at the elbow"
[linked image]
[linked image]

The difference between correct and too straight is pretty obvious.
Too many people are so overly concerned with poker straight legs and poker straight movement that they forget type.

My girl Sophie was invited to the Atlantic Top Dog Awards last weekend. To be invited you have to have won a Best Puppy in Group in the maritime provinces in Canada. Sophie has 2 BPIG and a BPIS under breeder judge Chris Neilson. She is just over a year old now. At the Atlantic Top Dog Awards, Sophie took a group 2. This is an unofficial CKC event but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. She was judged by 3 judges and given a score by each judge and the scores are then added together. There are 9 in the photo due to 3 rings being judged at the same time.

Right now the weather is BEAUTIFUL!! I did hear on Sunday a possibility of snow but, just do not know exactly where.

Our weather in November is usually up and down but, I will give the week in weather as we near Nationals!!

As to places NOT to miss.......Luckily, we will have the Plaza lighting on Thanksgiving!! Unfortunately, there will be around 100,000 people also on the Plaza to enjoy.

We do have our Jazz district on 18th and Vine. Heard really great Jazz to enjoy!!

We also have Westport which I really like! If you have time we also have Zona Rosa (which is a beautiful shopping facility, outdoors). Next to the hotel, which we can walk indoors to is Crown Center. There will be outdoor ice skating, the Mayor's christmas tree is being erected as we speak, Hall's Crown Center (which has alot of Beautiful items for alot of high prices, nice to look at though). Nelson Atkin's Museum, the Lighting District,
we do have gambling boat's that are not too far, Independence Center (your typical indoor mall), our new Sprint Center (do not know what will be going on), we have a new IHL Hockey Team within 20 minutes of Westin.

If you are a history buff we do have the WW1 museum, Union Station with Science City indoors, and Kalediscope for the kids.

I think we can find y'all something to do. The Westin also will have alot of suggestions more to probably what everyone would love to do.

BBQ BBQ BBQ

One place I like to visit for the Bullies is Brookside Barkery which is in WESTPORT!!

Sorry for the long list but, I am so excited....to start this Nationals!!

Lisa

Also, if any of you get a chance, please, please, thank Dean Dickey and the Nationals Committee for ALL their hard work on Nationals.

I LOVE to see all the replies . I agree and disagree on some things . The world would not turn if we all thought the same way . I have been in the breed since 1986 and still learn something about the breed everyday.
I read this and just have to shake my head ,only because of what I see some judges put up for winners . They are mostly all rounders and I swear they haven't a clue . Sometimes I would like to send them a copy of the standard ........lol

Keep up the GREAT post , it makes it a more interesting forum.

I had a couple of fellows approach me during a show, and ask if I knew where they could get a copy of the standard. I made it a point to get them copies, that day. Come to find out that they were provisional and were actually seeking the correct information about the breed.

It's a series of short races,
ran one after the other.

about judges

by (Login hugobull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Some judges have a natural ability to tell the good dogs from the average dogs.

Once they have their good ones, the standard then helps them pick the best of the best.
This is why an expert specialist appeals to me more than an expert all-rounder, although an excellent all-rounder is much better to me than a so-so breeder-judge anyday.

If I am bringing an excellent dog to excellent competition, I want to make sure that my hard work is regarded by at the very least, an expert evaluation, devoid of the persoanl nonsense that can go on, or the lack of expertise that is rampant in both breeder judges and multi breed judges.

A multi breed judge is only as good as the mentor he or she had, or the seminar he or she attended.
Not many of them have access to these picking apart sessions that are going on in here.
Imagine how some of you, as bulldog lovers, have been confused. Imagine how some Afghan breeder who wants to add more brees to his list, feels when faced with a ring of bulldogs..

I know that some seminars leave the attendee nothing but more confused. I have been to a few of other breeds that were great and quite a few that were awful.

It is easy to tell a judge to go read a standard, but many breeders are guilty of not reading it themselves, how can they get mad at the judges who don't?

Just sayin...

BCA Bulldog Standard Discussion Part IV Neck , Topline, Body

by (Login HMcDermott)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Neck, Topline, Body

Neck
The neck should be short, very thick, deep and strong and well arched at the back.

Topline
There should be a slight fall in the back, close behind the shoulders (its lowest part), whence the spine should rise to the loins (the top of which should be higher than the top of the shoulders), thence, curving again more suddenly to the tail, forming an arch (a very dictintive feature of the breed), termed "roach back" or, more correctly, "wheel-back".

Body
The brisket and body should be very capacious, with full sides, well-rounded ribs and very deep from the shoulders down to its lowest part, where it joins the chest. It should be well let down between the shoulders and forelegs, giving the dog a broad, low, short-legged appearance.

Chest
The chest should be very broad, deep and full.

Underline
The body should be well ribbed up behind with the belly tucked up and not rotund.

Back & Loin
The back should be short and strong, very broad at the shoulders and comparatively narrow at the loins.

Tail
The tail may be either straight or "screwed" (but never curved or curly), and in any case must be short, hung low, with decided downward carriage, thick root and fine tip. If straight, the tail should be cylindrical and of uniform taper. If "screwed", the bends or kinks should be well defined, and they may be abrupt or even knotty, but no portion of the member should be elevated above the base of the root.

================================================
The discussion keeps getting better. Please feel free to join in the discussion. Over the years these types of discussions have been some of the best ways of learning the standard. If you have a question or need clarification, there are several others who have the same need.

Harrold

Neck, Topline, Body

by (Login HMcDermott)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

A couple observations. The neck is a very important part of the bulldog. Correct neck definitely adds strength and beauty to the dog. Lack of neck can really throw off the gait and if you are not careful it is easily passed on to the next generation.

When studying the topline pay particular attention to where the rise starts and where the highest point of the rise is on the dog. Correct toplines are one of the defining characterictics of our breed.

A beautifully arched neck takes my breath away on a nice dog in the ring. Few of us actually remember to hold the heads in such a way that the neck arch is visible, which may explain why few all-breed judges see the arch as correct. We're often so concerned with the judge seeing the jaw/layback, we forget the neck.

Neck

by (Login Jaxxonsmom)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

I like a dog to have a nicely defined arch to the neck...nice thick and muscular. A good neck will really accentuate strong shoulders and will allow for more reach in the front. Many short backed dogs are lacking in neck and this makes the dog look squatty and overly thick. I know that some feel that a neck makes the dog look longer but if the dogs shoulders are placed correctly it makes for a beautiful outline and a strong balanced looking dog.

about necks

by (Login hugobull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

remember, hisorically, the neck has always been described as "moderate" in length, not short. The BCA standard has it described as short, but this is not the case in any other standard.
Not sure why, but if you read some of the bulldog writers of the time, they worried about long necks being associated with dogs lacking substance. My take is that they changed it from "moderate" to "short" in America because they did not want the old type to come back into vogue, and there was a real battle back when the BCA standard was finalized, here and in England, to go back to the "old" type. Again, that is the way I read it. It might not be totally accurate, but there is no one around anymore to ask.
Anyway,
The key is the "well arched" aspect. You can have thick, powerful and moderate length, without being too long.
You DO NOT want a long neck with no arch. You see that sometimes.
And you never want too short. As long as you have arch, you are ok. I personally have never seen a neck that I thought was "too short" with an arch. Some are shorter than others, but as long as the arch is strong, I am ok with it.
Here are some examples of what I like in a neck;

Standard Discussion part IV

by (Login wardbull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Neck
The neck should be short, very thick, deep and strong and well arched at the back.

"This is another of the attributes that seems to take a back seat. In my opinion it is one of the most crucial. To short of a neck takes away from so much of the Bulldogs confirmation. A nice Arched neck is such a big part of the top line. To short of a neck will effect the way the dog moves, the way the dogs front is constructed, etc."

"A signature part of the Bulldogs confirmation and one of the least understood. We have gotten so used to the almost flat back that when a Dog walks into the ring with a nice "Roach Back" the judge thinks it is incorrect or over done. One of the most prolific faults is the high tail set which kills the topline. It is rare to see truly correct placement of the tail."

Body
The brisket and body should be very capacious, with full sides, well-rounded ribs and very deep from the shoulders down to its lowest part, where it joins the chest. It should be well let down between the shoulders and forelegs, giving the dog a broad, low, short-legged appearance.

"Capacious means roomy. A Bulldogs body should look roomy from all angles, the profile, over looking the back. Well-rounded ribs, I have found, are hard to find and hard to breed into your dogs once you lose it. Very few Breeds of Dogs have well rounded ribs. Grey Hounds and other site hounds have deep rib cages but there is no or very little spring of rib. My point being maybe this is why it is hard to keep well rounded ribs....Beautiful full Briskets are few and far between these days, when looking at the profile of a Bulldog you should see that Brisket jutting out in front of the fore legs. The body should have SUBSTANCE, not FAT.

Chest
The chest should be very broad, deep and full.

"Cant add a whole lot to this statement, very self explanatory."

Underline
The body should be well ribbed up behind with the belly tucked up and not rotund.

"Very important to many Dogs in the ring that lack tuck up, too fat. Ribs very import to having correct underline."

Back & Loin
The back should be short and strong, very broad at the shoulders and comparatively narrow at the loins.

"Broad at the Should and narrow at the LOIN, not the Butt of the dog. I am not saying you want a BIG, OUT Of BALANCE BUTTED dog but what the Standard says is NARROW AT THE LOINS."
Some of the problems we have are a direct result of trying to shorten the back through our Breeding practices. It can be to short and to long, this is very obvious when looking at the overall balance of the dog."

"The TAIL a subject of many heated debates a few years ago. When Natalie and I first started going to Dog Shows, Specialty Shows as observers I remember seeing this very nice dog with a spiked tail thats tip came down a few inches below his anus, just wagging away. We both said Nice Dog, but look at that tail in disgust...We being newbies were ignorant to the fact that Bulldogs were SUPPOSED to have tails just like the one we had seen, because none of the other Dogs we had seen HAD tails that even came close to this one...Although I have never had a puppy that didnt have a tail when he was born I have had many disappear with age...Definitely a direct result of our Breeding practices to shorten the Back. I think we have made improvement in tails over the last few years we still need alot of work in the area. We need to improve the length, looseness (being to tight) and definitely the placement of the tail."

"Very important to many Dogs in the ring that lack tuck up, too fat. Ribs very import to having correct underline."

**************************

some dogs who are not even fat lack tuck up. There is a correlation between an arched loin and proper tuck up. Breeds that require an arch in their loin typically are tucked up in the belly.

Tuck up

by (Login Jaxxonsmom)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

An extreme example would be a whippet.....the tuck up is so extreme and accentuates the rise in loin....bulls are in no way that extreme but you can at least envision that the tuck up draws attention to the rise and vice verse...I have found dogs lacking in tuck up, but having correct weight are generally flat and short in the topline and it really reflects in movement....very short steps without the ability to sweep in and out.

I love the shape and it looks as if it is set well.

I prefer a slightly shorter tail myself. This is another area of the standard that allows some lee-way in interpretation (length).

These two dogs represent my own personal preferences for length;
The red dog in the middle;

Plus I am pretty adamant about the tail hanging low, in other words, I never want to see it while the dog is gaiting.

I am a huge fan of having a nice correct tail happy.gif I have always used 4" as a guidline. I appreciate the tail on your bitch as it is very straight and it looks carried well. Like Elizabeth I cant stand a long tail carried high though....it throws the whole look of the dog right off and they end up looking goofy. A nice tightly carried tail really is stunning on a nice dog happy.gif

Here is Sat and Sunday

by Lorraine (Login kar_isma1)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

Sat:
11 sweeps: 7-4 Nikki Bermea
33 regular: 13-16 (3-1) Ruth Williams
Sunday
5 sweeps: 3-2 (Sorry...don't remember judge)
25 regular: 11-11 (2-1) Mrs Cozart

I was expecting a much larger entry honestly but it gives my girl Kimora 4 different times in the ring so maybe she will slow the "Miss Fidget Feet" routine in the ring...she is good now in pet stores and other places...we'll see about the ring....at least I know she will move nicely on a loose lead....Oh dear...now that I said that I have damned myself to having her pull me around the ring!! LOL Love her to pieces!

BCA Standard Discussion Part III HEAD

by (Login HMcDermott)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

HEAD

Eyes & Eyelids
The eyes seen from the front should be situated low down in the skull, as far from the ears as possible, and their corners should be in a straight line at right angles with the stop. They should be quite in front of the head, as wide apart as possible, provided their outer corners are within the outline of the cheeks when viewed from the front. They should be quite round in form, of moderate size, neither sunken or bulging, and in color should be very dark. The lids should cover the white of the eyeball, when the dog is looking directly forward, and the lid should show no "haw".

Ears
The ears should be set hight on the head, the front inner edge of each ear joining the outline of the skull at the top back corner of the skull, so as to place them as wide apart, and as high, and as far from the eyes as possible. In size they should be small and thin. The shape termed "rose ear" is the most desirable. The rose ear folds inward at its lower back edge, the upper front edge curving over, outward and backward, showing part of the inside of the burr. (The ears should not be carried erect or prick-eared or buttoned and should never be cropped.)

Skull
The skull should be very large, and in circumference, in front of the ears, should be measured at least the height of the dog at the shoulders. Viewed from the front, it should appear very high from the corner of the lower jaw to the apex of the skull, and also very broad and square. Viewed at the side, the head should appear very high, and very short form the point of the nose to the occiput. The forehead should be flat (not rounded or domed) neither too prominent nor over hanging the face.

Cheeks
The cheeks should be well rounded, protruding sideways and outward beyond the eyes.

Stop
The temples or frontal bones should be very well defined, broad, square and high, causing a hollow or groove between the eyes. This indentation, or stop, should be both broad and deep and extend up the middle of the forehead, dividing the head vertically, being traceable to the top of the skull.

Face & Muzzle
The face, measured from the front of the cheekbone to the tip of the nose, should be extremely short, the muzzle being very short, broad, turned upward and very deep from the corner of the eye to the corner of the mouth.

Nose
The nose should be large, broad and black, its tip set back deeply between the eyes. The distance from the bottom of the stop, between the eyes, to the tip of the nose should be as short as possible and not exceed the length from the tip of the nose to the edge of the underlip. The nostrils should be wide, large and black, with a well defined line between them. Any nose other than black is objectionable and a brown or liver-colored nose shall disqualify.

Lips
The chops or "flews" should be thick, broad, pendant and very deep, completely overhanging the lower jaw at each side. They join the underlip in front and almost or quite cover the teeth, which should be scarcely noticeable, when the mouth is closed.

Bite-Jaws
The jaws should be massive, very broad, square and "undershoot", the lower jaw protruding considerbly in front of the upper jaw and turning up.

Teeth
The teeth should be large and strong, with the canine teeth or tusks wide apart, and the six small teeth in front, between the canines, in an even, level row.

=================================================

I hope many of the readers will pitch in with their comments about the correct head. In my opinion its an area that overall we need more eduation and study on. From ringside conversations, I can remember several times over the past few years where the large size of a head has been mistaken for a really good bulldogs head.....large does not necessarily mean correct.

I look forward to the continued discussion.

Harrold

One of the things I've noticed more this past year than I did the previous couple years is pinched tight nostrils and the tip of the nose not being tipped back as much as it should be. For a short faced breed, I think wide open nostrils is really important.

Pinched nostrils have always been a problem.
The tip of the nose "laying back" is also elusive. Some dogs are very strong in this area, others not so much.

If you don't have the basic shape, it is pointless to debate the particulars.

What good is a pretty jaw if the forehead is domed or "shelfy"?
Just as an example.

I see lots of judges nit pick a very good dog out of the ribbons, only to award a dog that is just average.

If a dog has a great head shape, then you can debate the finer features such as nose placement, eye shape, jaw width, ears, etc...
But do not ever admire a dog who does not have the basics down over a dog that has just one singular feature going for him.

HERE IS WHERE I AM OFTEN CONFUSED...
NOW WHAT I INVISON AS A CORRECT HEAD IS ONE THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE PICS YOU ARE SHOWING. TO ME THIS A BRICK SHAPED HEAD- CORRECT LAYBACK ETC.

BUT WHEN I READ THIS PORTION:
Face & Muzzle
The face, measured from the front of the cheekbone to the tip of the nose, should be extremely short, the muzzle being very short, broad, turned upward and very deep from the corner of the eye to the corner of the mouth.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I READ: THE WORDS SHORT- EXTRMELY SHORT FROM CHEEKBONE TO TIP OF NOSE THEN MUZZLE SHORT AS WELL...IF DISTANCE WERE AS SHORT AS IT READS, WOULDNT THAT BE SHORT FACED..OR DOES THIS GO BACK TO BEING BALANCED...

WHEN I SEE THOSE PICS..I THINK OF THE MUZZLE NOT BEING SHORT, NOR DO I SEE THE DISTANCE FROM THE CHEEKBONE TO THE TIP OF THE NOSE BEING ALL THAT SHORT EITHER..

Try to apply this same sentence to, say, a boxer.
"The face, measured from the front of the cheekbone to the tip of the nose, should be extremely short"
If that measuement was not so short, you would get a nosey dog.

The muzzle being short is a balance issue, but note this.."very deep from the corner of the eye to the corner of the mouth". If the dog's muzzle is too short, the corner of the mouth would be in front of the corner of the eye.
Compare these two. Trace a line from the corner of the eye to the corner of the mouth. On one dog, the muzzle is a proper length, the other it is short, the line from the corner of the eye has to go forward to reach the corner of the mouth.
[linked image]
[linked image]

This is a guide I use for "too short" in muzzle. It usually works out, sometimes there are exceptions. Shortness in muzzle is a matter of opinion. Some people are terribly turned off by it, many people have become soo used to it that it seems normal to them. But the standard references "very deep from corner of the eye to corner of the mouth" "Deep" cannot be measured sideways, in my opinion.

I am seeing quite a few heads in the ring lately that I would describe as "dish-faced". In stead of getting the straight line from forehead-tip of nose-jaw the profile appears curved with the nose set back out of line.

in addition to "dish-faced" I am seeing a loss of angle. Picking up the jaw so the dog is looking at the sky is not what is meant by a 45 degree angle. Faces are looking straighter--foreheads are losing slope (wish I could draw to illustrate my meaning)

I Agree, alot of folks have a hard time with layback!

by (Login wardbull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

The examples Elizabeth uses show the layback as it should be from tip of the jaw to top(back) of the skull.
To accomplish this you need LENGTH and SWEEP OF UNDERJAW...We have gotten so used to this fault that when you see a correct layback it looks odd. Once you have the true picture of Correct Layback in your mind you will have a very difficult time being able to appreciate what others consider good or great heads...
A good way to see and compare layback is when a judge has the class face out, move to where you can see the profile veiw where you get a great view of the classes head profiles one next to the other.

So True,...Arlene

by (Login JessicaAndCrew)

I see soooo many "shelfy headed" bulldogs. And then hear these people brag about what a great head their bulldog has. I like to see a nice clean layback where there isn't that "road bump" above the eyes. It is one of the things that really is one of my peeves. And this is important as I think the bulldog head is one thing that sets this breed apart.

What about the head that ran into the brick wall. If the judge uses the hand flat on the face they have a level line but the angle of the head is completely wrong. I just don't get the whole lay the hand on the head thing. To me any judge should be able to see a flat plain if they look at the head profile.

Shelfy is what I have been calling "two planed"

Perserverance isn't a long race.
It's a series of short races,

"flat" is a positive trait...it is the degree that the head "lays back" that we are concerned with. The forehead has to be flat, but the breed is "up faced".. not perpendicular..

Not shelfy, he is dishy. His nose falls below the plane created by the tip of jaw and the forhead.

We are seeing more of this in the ring, not a good thing.

But everyone needs a favorite uncle at home. happy.gif

so if the head structure was better and the dog had more length of jaw would it be so much of a shelf?

I dont know if i have seen a dog with a shelf and also have lenght & turn up of jaw.

***********************************
A dog absolutely CAN have a shelfy forehead and a good muzzle and jaw at the same time. As a a matter of fact, many of them do and since the muzzle is ok, people forgive the shelfy (not flat) foreheads.

On the other hand, some people get glamorized by flat foreheads and forgive a little length in jaw.

****************************
I always tell people forget about the bulldog looking as if he ran into a wall thing. A perpendicular profile is so wrong in so many ways, it lacks jaw length and turn up, the nose is straight up and down and the forehead has no length, height or layback (which is roughly 45 degrees).
I don't get the hands on the head either. You can see it. I think it makes judges look silly.

Re: Shelf head and flat face

Regarding angle of layback,

I was once told, and by whom I cannot recall, that a bulldog should always be "up-faced"

That is, all the features of the head are visible easily from above or the front and inclined upwards.

For example, a crocodile is up-faced, if even a few inches of it's skull are abve the water line, it's entire face is visible.

A human, by contrast is as downfaced as an animal gets.

So a bulldog is up-faced, a pug or frenchie or affenspinscher are all much more down-faced.

To be all on the right plane a dog needs to have sufficient lift and tip of muzzle and turn of jaw to bring all those features up to the proper plane. And it takes depth of skull and sufficient length of muzzle and jaw to do that. Too short is the enemy of up.

It also has to have a long, flat forehad. I have seen up-turned muzzles finish with shelfy or apple headed foreheads.

More info on Las Vegas Proposed Mandatory S/N

by (Login wardbull)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

The full text of this alert can be found on our website at:http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4005

The committee reviewing the proposed mandatory spay/neuter ordinance chose to send it back to the full city council without a recommendation. The measure will be heard at the November 18th city council meeting. Concerned fanciers and responsible dog owners and breeders need to attend this meeting to ensure that your voices are heard!

Las Vegas City Council Meeting

Wednesday, November 18th

9am

City Council Chambers

400 Stewart Avenue
Las Vegas, NV 89101

If you are unable to attend the meeting, please email the council members and let them know about your concerns.

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman Ogoodman@lasvegasnevada.gov

Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian LTarkanian@lasvegasnevada.gov

Councilman Steve Wolfson SWolfson@lasvegasnevada.gov

Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese GReese@lasvegasnevada.gov

Councilman Stavros S. Anthony SAnthony@lasvegasnevada.gov

Councilman Steven D. Ross SRoss@lasvegasnevada.gov

Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow RBarlow@lasvegasnevada.gov

Silver State Kennel Club Legislative Liaison Ken Sondej (4winds@viawest.net) is coordinating speakers for the meeting. You can also contact the AKC Government Relations Department at doglaw@akc.org for additional information. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.

Provisions of the Ordinance

All dogs and cats over the age of 4 months must be spayed or neutered unless the owner qualifies for one of the following exemptions:
holds a valid dog fancier, cat fancier permit, breeder permit or professional animal handler permit
the dog is used by a law enforcement agency as a law enforcement dog
the dog is used by a search and rescue agency for search and rescue activities
Please note that many search and rescue dogs are privately owned and would not be exempt under the current proposal
The dog is a service animal such as a guide animal, hearing animal, assistance animal, seizure alert animal or social/therapy animal
The dog is being used by a pound, shelter, humane society or similar organization, whether public or private, the principal purpose of which is securing the adoption of dogs or cats, provided that such organization has a policy and rules requiring the spaying or neutering of all dogs and cats placed for adoption
All puppies or kittens born to dogs and cats that have not been spayed/neutered as required will be forfeited and may be given to the local shelter for adoption
This is a particularly puzzling provision if the goal is to reduce the number of animals in the shelter. Why would the city confiscate puppies and kittens who would likely find good homes without their interference? A fine would be understandable, but confiscation is unreasonable.
Fines for violation
$250 for a first offense
$500 for a second offense
$1000 for a third offense
These fines are outrageously high and will likely force some owners to surrender their pets
The fine is reduced by 80% if the animal is sterilized within 30 days, however as these surgeries themselves cost hundreds of dollars, that does not help individuals who cannot afford the fines
Impounded dogs or cats that are intact, but whose owners do not qualify for one of the above exemptions must be sterilized prior to release
The current wording of this section seems to mandate that animal control perform the sterilization, and would deny owners the ability to take the animal to a veterinarian of their own choosing
Provides that impounded animals be kept for only 72 hours
Three days is a short time frame, especially as it is not specified that these are business days. A family on vacation for a long weekend may return home to find their pet has been impounded and adopted out to someone else
Requires that impounded animals be microchipped and that the owner pay for the microchipping prior to release
This only adds to the fees owners are required to pay for reclaiming their animal
No fee for this service is specified
The ordinance does not require the microchip be enrolled with a national registry. The implantation of the chip does not help recover the animal, only enrollment with a national registry will provide the owners contact information
Pet Stores are required to provide the following information to Department of Detention and Enforcement
The name and residence address of the buyer
The address of the location where the dog or cat will reside, if not the same as the buyers address
The breed and approximate age
A description, including principal colors
Failure to provide this information shall be grounds for non-renewal of, or disciplinary action against, a business license
It is unreasonable to require a business to violate their customers privacy in this manner
Since many shoppers may not reside within the city, it will create burdensome paperwork that in many cases will be useless
May cause shoppers to choose pet stores that are not within the Las Vegas City limits, costing those stores business
Will increase costs for stores when they have to sterilize any animals that may be over 4 months of age
May in fact deter these stores from selling older animals

Class entry question

by Tammy (Login canuckbulldog)

Question from a newbie happy.gif My bulldog Teela turned 1 in September of this year. When entering confirmation it has a 12-18 month category. Is this still considered a puppy? Should I bother with that class or just go open dog from now on?

Thanks!

Re: Class entry question

by (Login MarsHillBulldogs)

12-18 is not considered a puppy for the purposes of Best Puppy, etc. It does give the judge the knowledge that this is not a mature dog, so it can help if Teela is less than mature at this point. There are some dogs that will do fine in open, but I like the 12-18 class. Good luck!

I base my decision on the maturity of the dog......

by (Login thunderstruckbulldog)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

if my dog is still puppiesh-meaning appearance or behavior I keep them in their age class so the judge understands this is still a young dog. Some judges do not like a dog misbehaving in open especially on the ramp when they are running their hands over the dog. My boy Butkus is 3 yrs old and still jumps up and plays around sometimes like a puppy-but unfortunately I have to put him in open or bred by depending on who's showing him and hope the judge has a sense of humor. We had extensive debate about that very question

by (Login DonandKim)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

,,,with our co-owners, and several others. They kept saying move her up to Open, as she would do well there. We having watched her every day of her show career, were abit kennel blind in the other direction, thinking she wasn't there yet. The debate ended when we entered her in 12-18 one day at a specialty, and Open on the next(she was 13 months old, I think). She placed 2nd in 12-18 and RWB in Open. Needless to say, we kept her in Open, and she got all her points in Open.

Bulldogsworld Show Forum

I know everyone is getting ready for Nationals and there may not be a lot of interest in this right now but I plan to post some reminders anyway from now until the deadline of the Jackson, MS shows that will be held around the second week in December. This year there is going to be a supported Bulldog entry with lots of nice prizes. There will also be Bulldog hospitality thanks to Michelle Colon. I can quickly count 18 bitches that are suppose to be there and I know there are surely more that I don't know about. It would be great if this show could be built up to what it used to be, MAJORS, something we all NEED!! It is a four day show in a great location. There are ample vendors who offer Christmas discounts. Lots of people buy their fleece dog beds because they can get them at a great price at this show. There are plenty of great places to do Christmas shopping from a Bass Pro Shop, to North Park Mall, to Flowood's terrific shopping. Lots of hotels, good food and southern hospitality. Please come if you can. As the deadline nears, I will continue to post reminders.

I have only been showing for 2 yrs, I think I have all the regular show info down pat now but I am not so sure about the Nationals.

Do you have to be invited to the Nationals? Can non champions and champions be entered? What is the purpose of the show? Is it an AKC event? How do they seperate so many dogs and get them all judged in a timely fashion?

Thanks~Heather

Nationals

Bulldogsworld Show Forum

are just like a regular show or a specialty show. Bulldogs only. Classes are the same as you would see at an all-breed show.

Class dogs show in their respective classes. Champions compete against each other for Best of Breed as well as WD and WB. They also have Veteran classes that you don't normally see at an all-breed show.

sone answers..

Bulldogsworld Show Forum

"Do you have to be invited to the Nationals?"

No, it is open to any dog that would qualify for any AKC dog show.

"Can non champions and champions be entered?"

Just like you see "Yourhometown Kennel Club", or the "Bulldog Club of Wherever You are From", the BCA (Bulldog Club of America) gets to have a show too (AKC allows each club two point shows a year).. BCA chooses to have one and this show rotates through the different Divisions of the BCA each year. Each area then designates a host club and then the hosting Division gets a show too, so there are actually three different specialties over the course of "National Week" or "Nationals" or as some people prefer, "National"
Each show works just like any other, except typically there are three judges, one for dogs, one for bitches and one for non-regular and intersex classes. Some smaller Divisions go for two judges, not three.

"What is the purpose of the show? Is it an AKC event? How do they seperate so many dogs and get them all judged in a timely fashion?"

Purpose.. depends on who you ask, as far of "order of importance".. For some it is a week long convention. For others, it is a chance for more majors, for some, it is a week long party. For everyone, it is a celebration of our breed. Plus the annual councilors meeting and several committee meetings are held, along with educational seminars. There is the annual banquet honoring Hall of Fame inductees, award winning dogs from the National show, and they announce judges and location of the following years National.

There are two rings running simultaniously, dogs in one and bitches in another. National often runs over 3 days (sweeps, obedience one day, class dogs/bitches and Jr Showmanship the next day and the Best of Breed and non regular classes the last day.
The local host club gets the day after National and then the Division. Some times the local show and Division shows go two days, but very often it all gets wrapped up Saturday to give folks Sunday as a travel day. Every year is slightly different.

The show is always held in the hotel we stay in.

Non regular classes, example, brood bitch and stud dog or Brace gets judged after Best of Breed. Best Puppy gets judged after each Best of Breed too.
Veterans typically show after the classes are done and before Best of Breed.

The nationals are moved from division to division each year, in a different place. Next years nationals information (location, time and judges) will be announced at this years banquet. The time also varies also, it usually is held anywhere from Sept-November.

by (Login kar_isma1)
Bulldogsworld Show Forum

It is so educational....you get to see dogs who you have only seen pictures of in bulldogger or on bulldogsworld...you get to attend educational seminars for free....you get to meet all sorts of bulldog lovers from all over the US, Canada, Mexico and other countries...I can't bear the thought of missing it this year....I have flown w/o a dog to see it and attend all the conferences and sit back and chill with other bulldog fanatics....I have learned so much and know I have so much left to learn!!!! It is a terrific experience. It is wonderful to show a dog and it is wonderful to just attend and watch and study the dogs.
IF YOU CAN.....GO!!!!!
