Preserving Our Right To Own And Breed Animals Is Your Responsibility
IN THIS ISSUE:
* FT. LAUDERDALE TURNS DOWN ANIMAL GUARDIANS
* STANISLAUS COUNTY, 7/15 BOS, FEE HIKES INCLUDING $150 UNALTERED DOG LIC.
* EVOLUTION OF DISCRIMINATORY FACTORS IN CALIFORNIA DIFFERENTIAL LICSENSING
BUTTE COUNTY CA, following our May 11 report of pending amendments to the county animal ordinance, the Board of Supervisors deferred a second vote on the proposed changes to the barking law and imposition of cat limits. A facilitated public meeting was held on June 4, attended by approximately 100 citizens and the BOS Animal Ordinance Sub-committee (Curt Josiassen & Bill Connelly), with results reported back to the BOS on June 24. These included dropping the cat limit/cattery provision in favor of a complaint driven cat welfare check with 10 days to remediate deficiencies before enforcement action and retaining the barking provision with changes responsive to public concerns.
TOWN OF PARADISE, BUTTE COUNTY, Town Council on June 10 introduced an ordinance, scheduled for final adoption on July 8, to enact a municipal dangerous animal law in place of reliance on the state dangerous dog law (Food & Agricultural Code Sec. 31601 et. seq.). The new ordinance is generic as to "animals" rather than limited to dogs and establishes an administrative hearing process in place of the judicial hearings provided in state law. This follows months of considered approaches to local dog "attack" incidents.

HALT, YE ANIMAL GUARDIANS! SAID FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA City Commission back on April 15 when it unanimously reversed its April 1 vote (3-2) approving changing its animal ordinance definition of owner to include "guardian" and other related changes. In Defense of Animals had already published an email and website update adding Fort Lauderdale to its list of "guardian" cities, later deleted. One persistent local resident and Florida veterinarians convinced the Commissioners to abandon the "guardian" term. For more information, see http://www.theanimalcouncil.com/Property.html under the Guardian section.

STANISLAUS COUNTY Board of Supervisors has set Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 6:35 p.m. for hearing on proposed increases to unaltered dog license and many animal services fees. The unaltered dog license would be raised from $100 to $150, retaining the "reduced fee" unaltered license at $28.00 and litter license permit fee (dogs and cats) at the original $100 enacted in 2005. Current licensing information is available at: http://www.stancounty.com/animalservices/dog-license.shtm
Staff now reasons that the number of unaltered dog licenses relative to altered has decreased so much since the $100 fee was implemented in late 2005, an additional increase will cause further reduction in numbers of unaltered dogs. They surveyed nearby counties and found only Sacramento at $150 (also has reduced fee $45 for non-breeding "competition" status.) Sacramento County licensing information (and contract cities that did not raise their fees) is at: http://www.acr.saccounty.net/pet-licensing/index.html
Other Stanislaus County fee increases include the "SCATE" (Stanislaus County Alternative to Euthanasia) program reduced fee sterilization vouchers, and staff details the fiscal and responsibility concerns with this program, concluding that increased prices are still a good value for qualifying residents.
EVOLUTION OF DISCRIMINATORY FACTORS IN CALIFORNIA DIFFERENTIAL LICENSING: Stanislaus County (enacted 2005) marked the first appearance of an unaltered dog license fee reduction other than basic unaltered differential authorized by state law available to all owners paying the fee without further discrimination or restriction:
2005 Stanislaus County Code, 7.54.060 Licensing.
"A. Any person owning or having custody of any dog four months or older shall pay an annual license fee. The license fee for dogs shall be established by the board of supervisors and listed in the license fee section of this title. The increased fees collected by the department of animal services for unaltered dogs, less administrative
costs, shall be used to pay for vouchers to support spay/neuter programs.
B. Any person owning or having custody of any unaltered dog who meets any of the following criteria shall pay a reduced unaltered annual license fee as listed in the fee section of this title:
1. An owner who owns or operates an actual livestock working ranch or livestock farming operation of more than two acres; or
2. An owner who registers and participates in an American Kennel Club (AKC), United Kennel Club (UKC), or other state or nationally recognized organization and is a member of a parent club or organization for the purposes of showing, training, agility trials, or hunting and provides documentation to the department of animal
services of such membership and participation in the above animal activities."
Former Stanislaus Animal Services Director Michael McFarland had in late 2006 proposed repeal of the reduced fee provision (along with enactment of "mandatory" sterilization provisions), and it has never been clear if these reduced fee licenses have actually been issued and in what numbers. Presumably, most if not all unaltered licenses are at full $100 or there would be little reason to increase the fee in hopes of further reducing numbers of unaltered licenses. In the past 3 years, the concepts of dog (or sometimes cat) club membership and participation in competitive activities have been used, instead of conferring benefit on certain dog owners, as a bar to obtaining an unaltered license or further restriction even with a license.
In Sacramento County, many contentious meetings took place through 2006 concerning revisions to the animal ordinance, with final enactment in 2007 of the $150 unaltered licensed with a reduced fee unaltered license not as a benefit but restriction. The County does, however, publicize and issue these licenses to owners who can
successfully present qualifying documents:
"Sacramento County $45.00 Reduced Unaltered Fee
The reduced unaltered license is available to Competition Dogs and Cats and Working Ranch Dogs. A Reduced Unaltered License does not allow the animal to be breed. Any animal that is breed must have an unaltered license.
Competition Dogs -
The reduced unaltered license is available to owners who's animals are registered with a valid registry such a AKC, UKC or CFA and are actively showing or have competed with their animal during the previous 12 months, or the animal has achieved a title from a purebred dog or cat registry.
In the case where the animal has recently been purchased or has not competed due to it's current age, a letter from the breeder of the animal stating that this animal is of show quality and was purchased with the intent to be show and a copy of the animals pedigree will met the definition of this category.
Proof that an animal has competed in a show or event can consist of a cancelled check indicating entry fee paid or photo copy of entry catalog with name of owner, animal name and date of show or event.
Working Ranch Dogs -
Working Ranch Dogs are defined as a dog that has been trained and is used to herd and or guard livestock and the dog owner resides on or is the owner of property designated in the Sacramento County Zoning Code for agricultural use.
Application for a working ranch dog license can be in the form of a personal letter stating the address and zoning of the property and the training and use of the dog.
How to Purchase a Reduced License:
A reduced license can be purchased at the shelter or by sending in the required information as indicated above. If you have further question please contact the shelter staff at CountyAnimalCare@SacCounty.net <CountyAnimalCare@SacCounty.net> or (916) 368-7387"
Also in 2006, the Los Angeles County ordinance took the concept of membership and competition a step further to issue unaltered dog licenses only to owners who could meet the County's interpretation of these new "standards". The concept has spread to some other jurisdictions in southern California until the always conservative Los Angeles City Attorney's office added a non-discriminatory alternative qualification - obtaining a breeding permit, albeit at extra cost but without exclusions based on membership or competition. Other local jurisdictions had proposed exclusionary models but delayed action while AB 1634/CAHealthyPets version had been pending.
Now that AB 1634 has been amended to punitive mandatory sterilization rather than a qualifying and exclusionary qualification for all unaltered dogs and cats, the future of local unaltered licensing of dogs, and cats where cat licensing is required, is of critical importance. In this context, a simple high fee such as proposed now in Stanislaus County is preferable to other qualifications that can be either difficult or impossible to meet or implemented in discriminatory ways. While these "qualifications" were initially proposed as distinguishing and even rewarding "responsible" owners, they were quickly turned into tools to make owning unaltered animals difficult or impossible.

I understand that there's a bug going around that's been making dogs vomit for 3-4 days and that seems to have about a week incubation period. This has to be a new strain of a bug because I also understand that adult dogs with mature immune systems that have been to many dog shows are getting it also.
PLEASE, do not bring any sick dogs to a dog show.
Even dogs that are not showing that are sick can pass this on. Some people have younger dogs and puppies that could get into serious trouble should they get this.
At the first Franklin TN show this year my dogs got a VERY serious form of bordatella. They ran temps, coughed, hacked and gagged until they vomited(my Cinny went down several times and we had to swipe her throat), had green snot slinging EVERYWHERE, very lethargic(didn't even want to get up to go potty) didn't eat for 2-3 days-it was absolutely awful. Grand total in vet bills was about $500 in antibiotics/antihistamines and some very sick bullies. My show babies had already gotten over it by the 2nd Franklin show 2 weeks later BUT I stayed home because I had a couple of my non show bullies that were still sick. I was told several other exhibitors returned with SICK dogs to show again. I hate the horse arenas-breeding ground for everything.....I agree with Jay please stay home if your dogs are sick. Not only does the dog feel like *$))#, but their spreading it making other dogs feel like ^*(^% and costing other exhibitors additional vet bills and heartache. You don't know who may have puppies that might not survive these ailments.
L
I have,on one occassion, returned from a show only to have my two that went come down with URI, akin to Kennel Cough. Fortunately my third one was in the clear. You can bet after that, I made sure our guys and gal were upto date on bordetella, which btw is only good for 6 months. Yes it can happen. Until you have to deal with a house full of sick bulldogs(and the vet bill), you probably can't imagine. Don't worry, those who haven't will, those who have, will again. Good luck, be careful.
Perserverance isn't a long race.
It's a series of short races,
ran one after the other.
There are a couple dozen(last I heard) strains of bordatella and the vaccine only covers a few of them. We give all our dogs bordatella every 3 mths since we have some show dogs that are out and about fairly frequently. My vets recommend every three months altho I don't get them given in their office, I administer them myself....
L
your dog can come incontact with them at anytime or anyplace.
A dog may not show outward signs of being sick and still have the illness and spread it on to others. now way to know how or where a dog picks something up.
From my understanding of what is going around is it hits hard and fast and then resolves just as fast as it hits.
One of my pups owners called me last week, they dont know where or when the dog was exposed. She was sick and then it was gone. They live 2hrs from me so all i know is what they told me of the symptoms.
Supportive care was given, lemon to break the phlegm.
We dont know if it was K9 flu, a stran of kennel cough or what.
I got a phone call from a friend asking me if I was still going to the Portland shows this weekend and I asked why. She asked because several dogs in the area are sick but I told her that I left for California last week and I haven't been to any local shows for a couple of months (Klamath Falls was my last local show). It just concerns me for my dogs, my clients and those of people's dogs that are coming in from different areas.
by Deb, MacKenzie, Cleo and Ester (Login DLemons1) Bulldogsworld Show Forum
Ester got sick after the weekend after the Mt. Vernon show and then gave it to MacKenzie. There was alot of vomiting for a good 36 hours. I was so worried about aspiration. Definitely a serious bug. They started with a cough similar to kennel cough that lasted for about 48 hours, then the vomiting started. Ester had already had 2 shots of antibiotics for a staph infection so she got well pretty quickly. MacKenzie has a little cough still and nose goobers but he is well past the worst and should be beyond any incubation period.
by judy/wilson (Login bulliewilson) Bulldogsworld Show Forum
the vets at my place in hadley told me about two weeks agpto be very careful their was a nasty bug around, i always stay to watch different breeds when at a show, but i have been taking wilson right home since i heard, he is barely a year, and thats when it can be nasty.
and Im sure most caring owners would take this advice to heart. What troubles me is the person bent on winning at all cost, or an uncaring person who needs to win to get a paycheck. They are the ones who will still go and infect others without thinking twice about it. Im not saying all, but some for sure.
Anyone who truly loves dogs, and repects the sport of showing will happily stay home. I think that covers everyone here at BDW
It is sad that a post like this even needs to be made. To bring a dog that has knowingly been exposed (whether symptomatic or not) to such a violent illness is just plain selfish and shows a complete lack of respect for the other exhibitors.

so the comment
To bring a dog that has knowingly been exposed (whether symptomatic or not) to such a violent illness is just plain selfish and shows a complete lack of respect for the other exhibitors.
you dont know if they are going to get sick or not. This would mean that everyone stay home from every show, store, park in the nation because you might get an exposure. So i guess we can say, every person who has been to a show has been exposed, even the dogs who were not shown and just along for the ride are now exposed.
Yes if you have a dog who is symptomatic then i would agree but not for an exposure.
I thought what I meant was obvious but to clarify...
If your dog is in the same household as a dog who is symptomatic or has come into close contact with a symptomatic dog and is within the incubation period......
Then they should not be at a show....period. This is not just the sniffles or other mild ailment... Dogs are getting violently ill... People playing Russian roulette is exactly why it continues to spread and flourish.
I can't stress how important that it is to leave your sick dogs away from show sites. We took a 9 month old pup to shows over Memorial Day. Her first shows...wanted to get her out a little bit and the shows were close to our home. 3 days after the shows, she started coughing as if she had something stuck in her throat. Then the vomiting began. Took her in to my vet and she said that another breeder had also brought in a sick dog that day. Within 2 weeks, each of my dogs had caught this nasty virus. All vomited because of the phlegm in their throats. I think that the 2 points we won that weekend were sure not worth all the vet bills that I incurred after the illnesses. I am certain that she caught it there...we hadn't been anywhere else. So...someone....brought that sick dog to the shows and she picked up the germs. All of the dogs were very sick. Two dogs required injections (on multiple occasions) to help with the intense vomiting and they couldn't keep food down.
So, when you think of "just a little bit of kennel cough"...think again. This was a nasty version. Leave Mr. Snuffly home. Thanks and I'll jump back off of the soapbox.
Dara
BTW...Yes, I am alive and still have bulldogs....but am now a "Buckeye". Gosh, I cannot believe I said that. LOL! Someday soon I think we'll get all the boxes unpacked and find a place for everything. Ok....I think there is a box somewhere calling my name.
The pups got to go outside for the first time and had a ball..Heres a few shots of them playing in the grass
Here is Fivel...Hes had a slow start but is finally growing..

Jabba was off playing in the bushes so I didnt get any of him but hes a big bruiser.. Thanks for looking!
putting something on them right before going into the ring, I used to use a coat "shiner" but then I had one break out in blotchy hives, so I do not do that any longer.
I use this on all of our dogs..Just spritz very lightly over the top of the coat and do not brush in..It makes the light bounce off the coat..GREAT for indoor lighting..
I like Plush Puppy Shine and Comb. It leaves the coat soft and gives a great shine without feeling oily or greasy. If your dog has any white on its coat, it makes the white really shimmer, too.

Mink Oil by Bio groom was what i used to use and then noticed that everyone got hives from it so i would be bathing dogs in the motel which is NOT EASY.

I have to say that the venue at the San Antonio shows is one of the best I have ever attended.
The facility is topnotch, well staffed and organized with a ton of vendors and a Starbucks in the lobby...But the highlight is the Riverwalk literally across the street... Not only is it beautiful but it has every shop and restaurant...You could, and I did, spend days there and not see everything downtown San Antonio has to offer.
Booker had some success there and received a Group 2 against some of the top dogs and premier handlers in the country....We also had a photo shoot with Tom Weigand of The Winning Image (Something I have been meaning to do for two years). I had a really difficult time deciding from the many nice proofs and was impressed with their patience and willingness to work with me.
This is copied from the paper proofs of one of the final pics (bummed that I have to wait a month for the real deal)... photo un-retouched.
I wonder how many people will actually respond to this-it came up on the general forum with a new show person and she was nervous. I showed her my most embaressing show moment-who could be nervous after this-all you can do is bust a gut-and how many people would be lucky enough to have a friend ringside to catch it to freeze it for us in time......
Well, I have to say the most embaressing moment I've had is at my girl Cinny's first show. I always walk my dogs before we go in the ring so I walked her. She was antsy and nervous and wouldn't go. It was an outside show(Newnan GA). Well, we get in the ring, she doesn't want to walk she doesn't want to stack which was very unusual for this girl-she had been to conformation classes and had been stacked on ramp regularly since she was 6 weeks old(she was now 6mths old). Well I get her around the ring first time, up on the ramp and off, start the down and back and she's getting slower and slower-finally on the return back she just stops and I have dead weight on my lead. I turn around and look and what is she doing-Surprise Surprise my most embaressing moment in the show ring.......
All you can do when this happens is laugh-and ask the steward to give you a paper towel or call for cleanup....no my girl didn't win..... ))

tripped over Stevie Ray on the go around and fell on my face??? Good thing I was last in line, it could have been a multi-dog pile up (not to be confused with the pile photographed above)!
I've always been afraid of tripping over my dog-especially Butkus who on occasion decides he wants to switch sides......one reason you rarely ever see me wearing a dress/skirt to show in.....
L
we were going around and got to the ring opening and Mr. Stevie thought he was through...he was a newbie then. Well, I made the turn and he didn't...and the rest is history! He won that day, though, so I'm not sure if the judge loved Stevie or felt sorry for me

If you haven't seen it, this is probably the most embarrassing moment for me as a very green newbie, with Winston. As the video shows, he finally got his act together on the third and fourth day of the OKCBC specialty. Jane Fonda don't have nuttin on a Winston Workout!!!! Ah the good ol days!

i have been lucky, knock on wood
Claudia on the other hand, i will always remember this.
We were at the OSBC show a few years back (4.5)
Claudia was in BBE with her boy Timmy, he had been stopped up for a few days. She walked and walked and knew at some point he was going to go. He did, in the middle of Rick or Kelly Franz judging BBE. And he kept going and going and going. She just sat with a paper towel under his butt catching Timmy which seamed like for ever ringside, must have been 100% that for Claudia in the ring.
by Don & Kim Bryson (Login DonandKim) Bulldogsworld Show Forum
Yes she was. Oddly enough, Rick Franz was the judge on the last day, the one that Winston decided that he could stand still and be a gentleman! That is probably one of my proudest moments with him.
Perserverance isn't a long race.

Vicky,
You are kinda right!!! Timmy ate his dinner and Breezy's and he did poop once before he went in the ring...........guess it felt good.............cause you know what happened next.
Donna Mouser was the judge.............

I didn't know to move in front when the judge goes to the back!! Boy was I proud of how good my girl was holding for me though! LOL!!!! Thanks to my husband for catching my royal screw up!!
The time I was a all breed show in IND and was going around the ring and felt the waist band break on my pantie hose and could feel them falling , I was second in line so I thought i will be ok till i get out of the ring NOPE down they came in the middle of the down. Judge laugh and said you would like to go and fix things I said no after all thay were buy that time at my feet so I took off my shoes and step out of them did the down and back AND NEVER WORE A SKIRT OR PANTIE HOSE AGAIN.OH we got a 2nd in a class of 11.and then got res.
when I caused a judge to break his ribs!!! and he pointed it out in BIS the next day when he approched my dog" hey aren't you the one that busted up my ribs" OMG!... I ran for him to get a show photo after he left the photographer, he walked a different way and slipped on the stairs in his dress shoes, fell 2ft and hit the railing landing on his ribs!!! I felt like a MAJOUR A#@.
I'm waiting for the day I fall on my butt in the ring, I have seen so many do it.... its just a matter of when! lol
I was at a show here in Canada and I entered the ring. Had my girl stacked perfectly, I was proud. Judge came over, looked at me and her and scornfully told me I didn't have my armband and that I needed it. I ran out of the ring, handed my dog to someone ringside and ran to the other end of the rink to get the armband. Needless to say, I didn't win anything that day. LOL but he was a good sport and was later joking with me when he was going over my girl. I hope I don't do that too many times.

Dog Gone Live Wire, "Zack" completed his championship today in Carmel, Ca.
He was beautifully presented by Carmel Hupe. I wish I could have been there! Well done Carmel!
Zack is a difficult boy to show. He is always panting!! Special thanks to the following people for assisting in Zack's championship: Carmel H., Kevin B., Bobbie B., & Alan R.

Carmel is a great handler she was very lucky she had you for a teacher. Love the pictures sometime one thinks you can not win if a dog pants it is good to see Zack has disproved that theory. Wish you were here so Burt & I could come to the party. Miss You Kim
e-mail. I began searching for results. He disproved the theory but it took a lot longer than it should have to get those last few points. Carmel said he didn't pant at all yesterday! I miss you guys too!!

Wooooooo whooooooooooo!!! Zack and Carmel congratulations to both of you on this great accomplishment!!! Zack is awesome!!! I luv it CHAMPION DOG GONE'S LIVE WIRE!!!
It has been over 100 degrees here my bulldog lays on the cement in this heat she never pants at all when she comes in house no sign of panting. When I open basement door to give her a bath she stresses then the panting begins. It is amazing how they can take the heat but when stress sets in they look like a different dog. Many bulldogs do this when they go to dog shows but when they are at home it is a different story.
My problem with the bath tub was bad, a dermatologist told me to spray lavender its a body mist. She said it works with people so I would think it would have same effect on a animal. The spray will soothing effect on the mind which will calm the dog down I thought she was crazy. I sprayed it 10 minutes before I took my bulldog down to basement for the bath it was amazing. She was so much calmer.
Has anyone ever had a experience with lavender. Kim
I've got a pure lavender oil that I drop in the water. I sometimes massage the back of my neck with it. It is just lovely. The dogs love the smell, and it reminds me of my gramma
to put on the ears and nose before traveling, i have one who stresses in the car. At home she is great, run, plays sleeps in the crate. The care is a different story, has to get out an poo right away.
Hi my name is Kelley. Just wanted to introduce myself. Lorraine, how is "speed bump" he is my fav. My girl did ok in Ventura CA. Here is a pic of her on the beach. She is 10 months old.
not Speedbump Jr! LOL...like father like son. Atlas is doing very well thank you and has been very frisky lately for some unknown reason...well...changing his dog food may be helping him with energy level as well as my daughter remembering to give him his 'Legacy for Life' immune tabs. My grandson doesn't chase as much with all of his toys so Atlas has been more in the middle of what he is up to, as such. If he wasn't such a 'skunk' and burrow into the dirt, I'd special him a little b/c he really liked showing...but it is so hard for my daughter, who is due to have another boy in about 4 weeks, to keep his legs and chin clean. But we are working on it. I have been truly blessed to have had Atlas in our lives...and his mother Angie, the Queen Bee....his mother. He loves to come over and visit 'the girls' still. Glad to have you on the board!!!! Nice bully!

33 days pregnant and my bitch stopped eating. Her water intake has tripled thou..I finally broke down and gave her chicken last night (4% sodium - smart chicken) but she threw up half of it. Her temp is normal.. I was wondering if anyone has gone through this so early? Also, I can't ever remember having a bitch show this early.. Is that normal? Am I in for a rough pregnancy? We had a positive blood test at 30 days but I knew way before that she was pregnant..
she started not wanting to eat around day 24.... I was so worried thinking it was too early for this that I did an ulstra sound at day 26... yep prego... thank goodness I was worried something else was wrong :O) Good luck and prayers your way :O)
Peaches was clearly prego to us at day 28-30 wil a basketball belly..she just kept getting bigger and bigger..had 9 pups. This is also the normal time where they show sickness, stop eating for a few days - a week, etc..why do you think she is loaded with fluid> Do her nips appear to be full of edema? Or her front legs? If not, I wouldn't worry. Could be all puppy..Bitches don't normally start to take on excess fluid till the last 2 weeks or so. GIve the belly a rub for me!~
She's just thirsty..It's a good thing she is drinking..if she wasnt drinking and eating then I would worry! Give her till like day 40ish and I bet she starts acting fairly normal again.
It has been a while since I have posted, but I have been lurking and checking out photos & brags, congrats to all the winners and new puppies! I wanted to take a moment to introduce a couple “Jimmy kids” who I am very pleased with. I Also wanted to share Jimmy’s recent Best of Breed win in Richmond Virginia under judge Mr. Kenneth Falconi. We will be taking the summer off, just too hot. Looking forward to having these kids in the ring in the fall. Thanks for letting me share!

Thank you so much Lorriane for the congrats & compliments. I sure hope we can keep up the momentum and I am so looking forward to being in the bred-by class again
Thank you very much for the congrats & compliments! Fiona is def a lil diva, she was the only bitch in the litter and she knows she is a princess. What a blessing to have the only bitch turn out!! Hoping she continues to develop, right now she looks just like her momma did at this age, and I think her momma is beautiful! So, we will see! Thanks again.
Congrats to you too, I enjoy reading your posts and seeing your pics on here
Everything went well. The pups are in route with Lorraine. 5 girls and 2 boys. Can't wait to see them. I'm sure she will come on to let everyone know as soon as things settle down. Thanks for all the positive thoughts. Colleen
More by next weekend I'm sure...and by then we should have some call names. The 2 boys are both piebald so that means the rest and 1 piebald are girls.
Than you all for the well wishes! So far, so good. Time will tell.

LOL! The look on my face is priceless! Good thing it's all about the dog, right?
Salsa showed her heart out that day. It's great to see a bulldog that can show in back-to-back-to-back classes (Open, Winners, Breed) in almost 90 degree weather without any trouble and hardly panting. I was sweating the entire time, but we had fun!

Is show Etiquette becoming a problem in our show ring? This was a comment that was made at a recent show by a AKC Judge Why are these exhibitors laying their bulldogs on the ground scratching the bellies of their bulldogs & talking to each other while judging is being conducted it looks like they are at a barbeque instead of a dog show!
This show had 12 to 17 dogs per class it was air conditioned so the dogs were not hot, I know there are many new people in our sport but they do learn by example. Many of the people on the ground with their dogs have been in this sport for quite some time. In my opinion I feel it is very disrespectful to the judge as well as the spectators that many times pay to see us exhibit our dogs.
I would like to know what each of your opinions are on this subject?
Kim that's a big class and the judge tells the exhibitor to go and relax their dog not go over there and continue to show their dog..I personally think this shows that the judge does not understand the Bulldog..Our dogs need to be shown with their mouths shut and if laying a dog on its side to keep it relaxed and cool in a BIG class the so be it.. We all know that excitement can cause a dog to pant not just heat..
Bulldoggers are a friendly relaxed group of people and how we are in the ring with each other and the dogs are one of the draws to the breed..We enjoy a camaraderie that other breeds do not and wish they had.
I do not see any of this that you are describing as disrespectful and the judge who made the comment needs to lighten up..
Never at any time did I say not to follow judges instructions. I agree you can relax a dog at a given time I do not feel you have to lay on the ground with your bulldog you can turn your back and take care of your dog. Try teaching the dog to lay down on command it will solve alot of problems .
Apparentely this judge thought it to be disrespectful like it or not.
You say you have a friendly group then how come at two separate shows you had bulldoggers crying. I do pick up the pieces.

It just matters who the judge is, what they know about Bulldogs and how they like to run their ring. Unless I'm tired, I rarely sit on the ground in the ring - it also gets me dirty and I hate that. Anyway, I try to teach specials to either sit or lie down when it's appropriate so that they can be fresh when necessary. Unless it's truly hot, I'm not a huge fan of having all the ice and cool coats and all that. I feel a dog should be conditioned enough to be able to show for like 10-15 minutes at the max in a relatively good sized class. Unless the judge is the type to move the dogs a lot and unless it's blazing hot or humid, you'd think a Bulldog could make it around the ring like 3-4 times without passing out.
Also, as far as Bulldoggers being a friendly lot, I agree and I disagree. It's nice that people generally clap when the classes are placed or when a winner is chosen but the truth is that some of those that are clapping then proceed to verbally tear that winner down. I think it's encouraging for newer exhibitors to hear the applause though. But personally, I don't go to a dog show for socialization or applause. I show other breeds and it's more often than not more refreshing to know exactly where people are coming from. I clap and congratulate people ringside when I mean it.
Never once have I shown to a judge that said now go to the end of the line and continue to show me your dog..I have had judges give instructions as to how to set up my dog after the last dog has been gone over..To be honest with you I have come across many more disrespectful judges than exhibitors in the show ring..It is not hurting anyone to have a dog lay down in the ring to keep them calm and cool or to have an exhibitor sit by their dog..Except for maybe a judges fragile ego..I have never ever seen any exhibitor LAY down on the floor in the ring..BIG difference between laying down and sitting next to your dog.
Are you saying Bulldoggers are not a nice group of people just because someone has cried to you at a show?? I really think thats a very unfair assesment of our bulldogger family..
If the judge tells us to relax.. I take him/her at their word! The dogs just look better with their mouths closed and if I can take a chance to keep my dog calm I am going to do it (my dogs don't need help to breath). If I have a dog that will free stack the whole time and not get too wound up, I might take the opportunity to work on that training while we wait. I certainly mean no disrespect to the judges when I relax and certainly have never heard a judge complain, if anything, all I hear is what a pleasure judging the bulldog ring is.. a nice change of pace!
Now.. as a judge, when I say relax, I mean relax. It actually bothers me more if I tell the class to relax and I get some overhandling fool working his poor dog the whole time. I tell them to relax for the dogs.. I am not as worried about the peop0le, but I prefer judging calm and relaxed dogs, not dogs who are giving out at the time I need to pick from all the over work they got while I was not even paying attention to them.
Just my opinion.

Although I have only been showing for a little more than a year, I also take the Judge's instruction to relax while judging others on the ramp at their word. As a novice exhibitor I was rather surprised at just how relaxed some people let their dogs get. I do not allow mine to lay or sit down though as I want them to know they are in "pay attention" mode and the ring isn't a place one sits. That's just my philosophy though. I certainly don't mind what others do with their dogs to keep them at their ring best. I have also chatted with fellow exhibitors, however I try to keep my voice down so as not to distract others and the judging.
If a judge doesn't tell us to relax then I keep working my dog as best I can at all times. There are some Judges who will look over at the line while they are judging the ramp dog, but many do not. So much depends on what is happening in the ring at that moment.
If you have given the Judge an entry and follow their ring procedure without any yapping I am not sure how that can be perceived as disrespectful.
I've never heard any judge complain about that before and I believe it is best that the breed be as calm and cool as possible even if it is air conditioned. Dogs can stress and get overly excited even in the coolest environments. Besides, we as owners/exhibitors don't necessarily make our dogs lay down or roll over, most do that on their own, they're bulldogs, lovable companion dogs, not lap dogs, not sporting dogs, etc., a big, burly lovable clown that loves attention. We are also very open and friendly people, but its the dogs that attract a lot of spectators making it seem like a party atmosphere. The floor is a very cool place for the dogs and with a face like this, who can't resist fussing over our breed. I much rather see a dog that is calm, yet confident with his mouth closed than one obviously stressed out and panting and struggling to get around the ring, I've had bulldogs like this and it stresses me out. If we're all talking and my dog lays down, I'm not going to keep yanking him up and forcing him to stand or sit. Waiting outside the ring is relax time and if he's stressing, I'm going to rub him wherever he wants to relax him. If this bothers the judge, then perhaps they need to judge a different breed, perhaps they were having a very bad day.
My opinion, if we're all being loud and boisterous, sitting around stuffing our faces and drinking and allowing our dogs to romp and bark and carry on, then I'd say that was total disrespect and we don't deserve to be showing. I don't see any outright disrespect for any judge when we talk with each other and the dogs are laying on their bellies or are on their sides getting their belly rubbed. To me, those dogs are very well treated and part of a family and not just a show dog shoved in a kennel and only brought out to show and breed. It also shows that they are a true companion dog and are doing exactly what they're suppose to do, be a companion, and some of the judges actually like observing that as well. A happy dog is a confident dog.
Sorry about that I talked about outside the ring. I let Norbert lay down inside the ring when its a large class, will talk to him and give him some rubs and will get him up as each dog progresses getting him to free stack and lay down again. Norbert is a very excitable boy, I don't do that he will get out of hand and will fight during a stack. I don't believe in stressing a dog out, therefore, each dog is different and should be handled accordingly, its by no means disrespect to the judge. Of course, if there's not that many dogs in the ring I will keep stacking Norbert for the final line up. Every dog is different, but in my opinion, a judge judging bulldogs should know that if a dog is laying down or getting rubbed its for a reason and again my thoughts on stress and keeping a dog cool and comfortable comes into play inside the ring as well. I can see if everybody continues to remain laying down and whatever when the judge is ready to judge the dog, then yes, that's disrespectful not only to the judge but the rest of the exhibitors who are ready.

i have been in the show world for years, have you been to the group ring, they carry on and on, both with the people inside and with people on the outside. I have been in both the dane ring and rottweiler ring, where competion is deadly with the professional handlers, i got a bulldog because I wanted to show my dog, because i didnt want to have to carry a club. Yes the bulldog ring is relaxed but as far as i can tell and the judges i have been under their very relaxed also i love it, maybe your judge was just having a bad day.
I dont think i would relax my dog that much in group. Most in group will go off and keep the dogs cool in a corner, covered with a cool coat, ice, coolers or what ever. When it's time to display the dog it's on, no reason to not be relaxed and have a good time.
Group is full of nasty tricks too.
We had a judge a few weeks ago, who acted like he was on a comedy stage.
and those professional handlers can be cutthroat. Becoming lax could hurt in getting back in line and getting a proper stack, but cooling a bulldog down and letting them lay down shouldn't be a problem ever as some require it more than others. If you're a newbie though, the professionals will intimidate and jump at the chance to ruin it for you as its all about winning to them because its big money. My own daughter got that bad treatment first hand her first time in group by two professionals (front of her and back of her) tried to limit the space for her to stack the dog she was showing properly, but she did pretty good and stood her ground never moving out of place and constantly making the dog free stack thereby making both professionals fix their own dogs.
I agree those professionals do carry on in group, while you see the lone breeder/handler (or two) out there looking really happy and proud, yet petrified, LOL (those are the ones I love seeing place out of group). Professional handlers are out to win, period, don't care who they run over or sabotage to get it. My daughter showed in the boxer ring, I did it once and holy cow - I know what you mean about carrying a club.

I've shown at all-breed shows where the judge would look back at the dogs that had already been examined. In that case, it's good to at least have your dogs best feature on display. I have a bitch who's very wide across the chest, but short legged, so I always try to have her front end facing the judge. She may be looking up for a cookie crumb, but she's always got that view showing. Some judges don't look again and never lay eyes on the dog until you line up for the final go-over. Those I don't bother to continue showing the bitch at her best. Watch the judge, it's an education. I think in alot of cases, they're making their placements as they go. I was told once by a very well-regarded judge that he makes his preliminary picks when the dogs first come in the ring, then winnows out the obvious non-placement dogs, and is evaluating his decision all through the process. For him, I would always at least keep the dog on it's feet, best view to the judge. In specialties, the judge usually will make some statement about relaxing your dogs. I appreciate that.
Bottom line, you have just so many minutes to impress the judge with your dog, why be on the floor part of that time? I'm there to win, visiting is fun, but it's secondary to winning.
I try to keep Norbert standing for as long as I can and when the judge no longer is looking or will look I release him, otherwise he will get antsy and will only just show the judge what a mischievious boy he can be and he can be a handful at times. He's just a very excitable and very active boy. I had a boy who had a real showdog personality, would stand still the entire time, he was so good but he did not turnout, wish I had that personality bottled.
I fail to see a problem with people keeping their dogs calm when they are not being evaluated in the ring. A dog lieing down when not needed for judging is hardly cause for concern. We need to keep this a pleasant experience for our dogs and the exhibitors. Any spectator viewing is secondary in my opinion. We are not paying an entry fee and traveling expenses to get the general public's opinion of our dog. That said, we should dress appropriately, we should value and practice good sportsmanship and always treat our dogs with respect.
If I notice a judge continually looking back down the line of dogs for comparison after each individual exam I will keep my dog working. If a judge tells me to relax, then I do so. If I have a special I might play around with free baiting and keep the dogs attention. Each dog, each judge and each handler is different. We are not all cookie cutters and as long as we keep the dog's best interest in mind then we are being respectful of our sport and most importantly our dogs.

Many of the people on the ground with their dogs have been in this sport for quite some time. In my opinion I feel it is very disrespectful to the judge as well as the spectators that many times pay to see us exhibit our dogs.
I would like to know what each of your opinions are on this subject?
tells you to relax your dog it doesn't mean YOU sit/lay on the floor & have the dog in your lap rubbing their bellies. Question... some of you show other breeds, do you sit/lay on the floor & let them climb in your lap rubbing their bellies. It looks like you don't care and really don't wat to be there. While you are relaxed they can be standing there, you can keep them calm by just petting them or even talking to them.
So everyone that thinks this is okay.... Do other breeds do this? NO And yes, judges do tell them to relax also.
On another note... talking in ring (not paying attendtion to the judge, that IS what you are doing when you are talking) is rude. I have to say I 'was' guilty of this. I don't do it anymore. I actuaaly had a Bulldog Breeder judge come up to me & tap my shoulder to get my attendtion so he can see my dog. Was I talking? Yes, both inside & outside the ring. I placed third when he gave me my ribbon s/he told me that s/he hoped I learned my lesson he wanted to place me first. But wasn't showing my dog. S/He did give the bitch that won my class winners bitch. Did I learn my lesson yes.
I don't see anything wrong with dogs sitting or lying in the ring when the judge has given instructions to relax. I don't see anything wrong with the exhibitor sitting next to his or her dog. As for ice/water and cool coats/collars I am a big fan. Even when it is cool some of my dogs will pant out of excitement (not a breathing problem). My dogs love to show. Some of them love people so much making eye contact with a person outside of the ring is enough to get the dog excited and panting. I guess they are too friendly--LOL If I put a cool collar on they don't pant or get too excited with eye contact. A Bulldogs head is hard to appreciate if the tongue is hanging out. Now if is hot out exhibitors should cool their dogs even if the dog handles heat well. It doesn't take much for some to overheat. I have never had an problem but I am a cooling fan. I love my cool collars!!
I am sorry that a particular judge felt they way. I think tending to you dog should be considered a good thing.
I was balled (quite a few years ago a mission circuit) out by a judge for putting a cool collar on one of my dogs on a cool day because he was a panther. I did not appreciate being yelled at. He proceeded to lecture the class on how unhealthy bulldog were. They was not the case this dog is a fine breather just a panter. Needless to say my boy didn't do anything, my bitch (not a panter) was WB that day--go figure.
I don't think I would enjoy showing as much if the exhibitors could not be relaxed and talk quietly while waiting.
Just my 2 cents!! Thanks for reading!!

so I am a novice. IMO - 12-17 dogs per class is a very large class-I think that is alot to ask of my dog to stand in a perfect stack for a minimum of 25 minutes(12 dogs X 2 minutes allowed each dog for the judge to go over). I don't think it is any disrespect to the judge for me to squat down(I've never sat or laid down) and talk to my dog, love on my dog, scratch him behind the ears and scratch his belly. I am all for proper behavior in the ring but I think expecting a dog to stand around for that long in perfect stack or at attention is asking for a dog to HATE a dog show, which I think leads to boredom, which leads to trouble. I try to make the dog show fun for my dogs. I try to give them special treats and I give them extra love and care while grooming etc etc. I've never had a judge ask my dogs to remain stacked and if they expect it than I guess that's the last time I'll show to them. A happy dog shows it in the ring. My Butkus is a clown and a exhibitionist(he jumps up like a jack russell terrier) and shows so much better when he is happy. I don't talk much in the ring as I am usually watching other people's dogs(some dogs get agitated in a class that size and might misbehave), I also watch the handlers to see what they are doing(since they do this for a living) and finally I watch the judge-if I notice the judge is one that likes to look back at the dogs he's/she's already viewed, I do try to keep my dog at least exhibiting his best features. As far as the dogs breathing with their mouths open, I invite you to come show in the sunny south(for those of you who have not) when the temps soar in the upper 90's/low 100's with humidity in the millions or so it seems and see if bulldogs don't stress, even in an airconditioned building. Cooling collars, ice coolers and such are a must.....even with good breathers. I don't think I've ever "deliberately" shown a judge disrespect. I always thank them for a ribbon if we place and if I get Winners I'm usually a blubbering idiot-

We’re talking about a dog show, not an audience with the Queen/Pope/President/whoever.
If I decide to sit in the floor and scratch my dog’s belly, whether he is standing, sitting or laying on his back, I don’t see how it should be a problem for a judge. At least I am paying attention to my dog, which it seems some exhibitors forget to do. Certainly if an exhibitor or dog’s actions in the ring interfere with the other dogs in the class, the judge or ring steward should address them.
Not to mention the fact that it’s the quality of the dog that a judge is supposed to be evaluating, not the activities of the person at the end of the lead. IMO a judge who admits to penalizing a dog they felt should have won a class because its handler wasn’t paying attention is not saying anything positive about their judging skills and they might should re-evaluate which end of the lead the Standard applies to.
Personally, I do whatever keeps my dog the most calm. Some do well when allowed to relax and maybe enjoy a belly rub or butt scratch, others are at their best when kept stacked throughout most of the class. Whatever works to keep the dog calm so that it can be presented at its best when the judge’s attention is focused directly on them.
Well I guess it all depends on how serious you are , I have a few partners in crime who I love to show with. We joke around before, during and after showing about Bitch Blocking each other, tripping each other, dropping bait to each others dogs. etc. I LOVE IT ! Some of my fondests memories are times I had inside the ring with big classes. I think it relaxes us (my friends who particpate) and whether we win or lose we had a few laughs. I have never heard anyone say that we disrupted them and I have never been spoken to by a judge or ring stewart. I remember one time me and my partner were at the Nationals and we had two young dogs who needed quite a bit of bait to keep them intersted it was a big class. When we got in the ring we both realized we had no pockets and all these tiny peices of bait which kept falling on the floor when we stacked. I threw them all in my bra and just took some out when we needed it, we were in stitches the whole class. As I tried to have no one notice me reaching into my blouse and pulling out liver. I truly don't think anyone did notice, mission accomplished. I never laughed so hard in my life and we did'nt win but we still talk about what a fun time we had that day in the ring. I agree it depends on the judges but most judges I think who love dogs and dog shows want a lighthearted enviornment for both exhibitor and dog. I have the utmost respect for judges I choose to show to, but that does'nt have anything to do me not enjoying myself at the show.

looking at the pics of her standing I would guess 5... but the ones of her laying on her back, I would think 7??? Best of luck with her, she is a pretty girl
My guess is 6-7 pups 4 males 3 females...well./..maybe that is more of a wish fulfillment guess...7 pups are more than enough and would be happier with 5 I think as far as difficulty in raising them.
Merlot is doing very well however...she ate full dinner tonight, almost ate my hand earlier when she had a 'snack' of boiled liver and is in the living room with me in the full A/C at night (I am still sleeping on the couch so my right arm doesn't touch anything or anyone) instead of the dog room with fan and some A/C.
Pictures of the pups will be posted the day they are born...if nothing else, just to drive Lynn King crazy!!! LOL

Too funny...I never did notice she had 10 nipples! Boy...let's hope she doesn't need them all! She is still eating and drinking and acting pathetic only when she can't get up into the chair...she puts her front feet up and looks at her bottom and then looks at us with this face that is sooooooooo pathetic so we will help her get into 'her' chair (husband's chair) which is the biggest chair and she seems to find to be the most comfortable chair. She huffs when my husband sits with her and then tries to shove him over as far as she can and then gets him to scratch 'her highness'! Too funny!

After checking and rechecking, it looks as if AB 1634 will be heard on Monday, July 14th at 10:00 a.m. Room 4202. this is a large hearing room that hold people downstairs as well as upstairs.
I am urging everyone who can, to attend this hearing. Between now and then I urge you to write or fax members of the Approps committee. I sent out their info previously. If you like you can overnight letters.
PetPAC is sending in the following letter. I can suggest you take portions of it to use if you like.
I would not copy the whole thing. so go for it, if you like. Please do not tear apart my numbers or my suppositions. if you do not agree, just don't use them.
Thanks
Bill Hemby
AB 1634 What it does:
AB 1634 essentially outlaws intact dogs and cats in California. (See Sec.30804.8. (a) and 30804.8 (e) (1), Sec.31751.8 (a) and Sec. 31751.8 (e) (1). AB 1634 does not contain due process language, nor does it allow an appeal process and in some cases will require self incrimination of owners of intact dogs and cats. For instance: Certain cities such as the City and the County of Los Angeles have adopted a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance. These ordinances require owners of intact dogs and cats to purchase an intact animal permit. Under the provisions of AB 1634, these intact permits are an admission of guilt of owning an intact dog or cat.
Fiscal Ramifications of AB 1634:
AB 1634 does not contain a state appropriation, however there are many fiscal ramifications required under this legislation. It is estimated AB 1634 will affect over 100,000 dogs and possibly the same number of cats. For instance, all pure-bred dogs shown in American Kennel Club and United Kennel Club events must be intact.
A very real scenario would be for supporters of mandatory spay and neuter to attend an AKC dog show. There are between 1,200 and 4,000 unaltered dogs at these shows. The published show catalog names every dog, the owner and the owner’s address. As the provisions of AB 1634 are triggered by an unsubstantiated complaint (Sec. 30804.8E (1) there is no way to estimate complaints that may be spurious. So, if animal rights extremists were to telephone in complaints it would mean the end of dog shows in California. The fiscal impact would be over $50 million in local revenues.
Law Enforcement
As far as fiscal considerations AB 1634 assigns enforcement of its provisions to any peace officer within the state. It is believed most animal services departments are under the control of the county sheriff. AB1634 will fall upon local law enforcement to commit resources to enforce violations of this division.
Using a conservative figure of only 10% of those intact dogs receiving a public complaint, it is estimated each complaint will require a four hour personnel cost @ $50.per hour or $200.per complaint, (4 hrs) @ $50.per hour. Mandatory sterilization requires 3 complaints. Total personnel costs would then be $600. Subtract the fees of $150. = $450. X 10,000, you have $4.5 million in costs to local law enforcement. This does not include complaints against dogs and cats already spayed or neutered. In that case there is no fine, but there could be personnel costs. This does not include complaints against cat owners, which would be less, but none-the-less require the same amount of time to administer.
end of police K9 dogs
Since there is no provision to exempt police K9 dogs, or Dept. of Corrections K9 dogs and these animals must remain intact to accomplish their mission, three complaints from a convicted felon or inmate would require them to be sterilized. In these cases not only will the government agency incur the cost of an operation, but they lose the service of that dog, thus requiring the purchase and training of a replacement. The cost to purchase and train a law enforcement dog is about $25,000. Of course any replacements could trigger further complaints. We estimate criminals and inmates will generate complaints against all 850 law enforcement K9 animals. That is a potential replacement cost of $21,250,000. to state and local agencies.
Search and Rescue
AB 1634 will have a devastating effect on SAR (Search and Rescue). These animals are provided by trained search and rescue volunteers. The state does not pay for the use of these animals. However, AB 1634 could require, after three complaints, these dogs be sterilized. At that point, owners of search and rescue animals would have to discontinue their services in California. This could result in a potential loss in the millions.
Sport Hunting
When applying AB 1634 to the sport of hunting we believe it will have an adverse impact on state hunting licenses. In order to continue the best lines, there has to be intact dogs in sufficient numbers to procreate. The majority of hunters thus keep their dogs intact. A survey of the Department of Fish and Game revenue sources show water fowl and duck hunting licenses which require an intact dog for retrieval, come to $3.86 Million. Game Bird Licenses which require an intact dog show fees of $1.9 million. Wild pig tags show fees of $19.5 million. Combined that would be a potential loss of $42.36 million a year in state license fees.
Working Dogs
The same holds true for working dogs, sheep herding dogs, cattle herding dogs, protection dogs, military trained dogs, service dogs, guide dogs, dogs for the hearing impaired. Without sufficient intact bloodlines, the gene and selection pool of these dogs will be lost.
The cattle and sheep industry could suffer multi-billion dollar losses.
Feral Cats
AB 1634 as amended, still does not address the feral cat problem. This is the most problematic issue regarding cats in California. Thus feral cats would continue to fill animal shellters in the thousands. Owned cats are indoor animals. In order to effectively search out intact cats, it will require peace officers to physically search the homes of cat owners. As that is a violation of illegal search and siezure, even with a potential civil complaint, it is wondered how the provisions of AB 1634 will have an effect on the cat population. Cat shows also judge sterilized cats, it may be a problem for supporters of this measure to have animals investigated as to their reproduction organs.
Closings
AB 1634 starts down a road that is froth with unintended consequences. As with the original bill, it is impossible to enforce, will require huge investments of government tiime and expense, and will not result in reducing stray or impounded dogs and cats.
The City of San Bernardino passed its own mandatory spay/neuter law last year. Ken Childress Director of San Bernardino City Animal Control now says; "the facilities can't keep up with the number of animals that are being dropped off by pet owners or picked up by animal-control officers."
I (or name of kennel, organization) asks that you vote “No” on AB 1634 when it is presented in Senate Appropriations Committee.
Can't let the daughter outdo her Mom (congratulations, Rachel). Buddy (CH Omega's This Bud's For You) went Best of Breed Sunday at the Ventura, CA Summerfest. Mrs. Alane Gomez judged. Classes were huge--30 dogs/36 bitches and 15 specials--several in the Top 20. This was his first weekend out as a Special. I was happy, happy (smiles) but then to top it off he got a Group 3!! Judge was Ms. Elizabeth Muthard from Bristow, VA--never showed to her before. I wasn't sure about specialling Buddy. He is such a plain brown color and very standard sized--as in not very big. But this wekend convinced me to give it a go. Carmel Hupe of course handled him--thanks so much, Carmel. Buddy's son, Miller (Omega's It's Miller Time)placed second twice out of 4 days in big Open classes. The girls did not place but did make the cuts. Sierra, Miller's litter sister, is finally showing without freaking so hopefully now that judges can go over her, she will start to do something. I love the Ventura shows. The weather is always so nice and the Bulldoggers always have some special event planned.
That is awesome. I showed to Ms. Muthard not long ago...she's also a great one to show pups to. Not only was she soft handed and soft spoken, she seems to genuinely like both our breed and puppies. She put my puppy bitch up for WB/BW/BOS.

I would like to introduce everyone to Vivien. She is quite a doll. She is our show hopeful girl, and will be making her debut in a few months, given we can stop getting her to roll over for belly rubs everytime we stop walking (haha!). She however, has taken to the lead VERY well, and stacks quite nicely. These pics are from the last few months. I will add new ones after our "groom". These are all just casual shots.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. I appreciate them, and am sure the breeders do as well!
I, of course, would also like to thank the breeder immensly for entrusting me with this wonderful little girl, as well as the recommend (all of them!) from another bulldogger. GREAT ladies!! Thanks again :0)!!
We hope that we can make you all proud of us, ya know...soon!
Here are some earlier pictures of her...when Viv was 'Latifah'....thought you might like them...it is always fun to compare pictures...and you are doing an excellent job of setting her up too. Shoot me an email sometime as you are now part of the family since Viv is part of your family!

I knew Jerry for a short time. He was a true bulldoger. Jerry was diagnosed with a very dibilatating illness that there was no cure for. The end result would be death. I know that Jerry was not doing well. I also know he loved his family very much. His action was to save his family and himself from needless suffering and worry. Jerry loved life. I'll miss you, Pal.
I came home from work this morning to find a message on my machine, that a friend of mine had passed. I was/am upset. I too personally know Jerry, and it really bothered me with how the message was posted about "taking his life" without Most people knowing how very sick and painful Jerry was. If you did...you may have understood maybe why it did end this way. He was a proud man. I have always thought that Dr. Jack Kevorkian provided a kind humane service....we are kinder to our animals when sick and terminal, yet we prolong suffering for our own kind.
Jerry truly was a bulldog Champion....in it for the breed...not all the glory, that at times becomes more important for some. He and Janet NEVER missed a nationals to my knowledge until he got sick, and was always at the specialty shows.(even if they didn't show)...b/cause he loved the Breed, and the Bulldogger Friends around him, and to usually lend a kind word or witty comment. He continued to work on committee of the Bulldogger even when he became sick. He held offices in the BCA.....OUR breed was important to him!
Yes it is true, he did end his life...and it hurts me to think that someone would have to suffer so much in pain (and I have seen it, I am a nurse) that more couldn't have done more for him, and had him pass on more peacefully.
I didn't know Jerry was that ill. I didn't know him well but I have to say that he was extremely personable and very nice to me when I was at the Chicago Bulldog Club specialties a couple of years ago. I'll remember him for that and I'm sorry to know about his illness. My thoughts are with his family.
I have not known Jerry as long as some, but I liked him and respected him. Over the last couple of years, he and I had some great phone calls. When we first started communicating (BCA business) He called me and I answered the phone. He said "hello" and I said "Hi Jerry". He said "You recognized my voice?" I replied "No I have caller ID!" He said "I always consider it a complement when people see my name on their caller ID and still pick up the phone!" I will miss his sense of humor. I will also miss our "BCA issues and possible solutions" discussions.
I wanted everyone to know some of his final thoughts. A while back (maybe 4-6 weeks) we were talking on the phone about updating the information concerning the Charitable fund on the National website. He suggested that I go back through the Bulldogger reports (which he had approved for accuracy)to put together some information. He was not sure he was up to it, but wanted it done.
I was working on it in between visits to my husband's family. My brother in law was also dying. The day before Jerry died, He sent me an e-mail, and said that he had had some lucid moments and was able to put together some stuff for me for the Charitable fund pages on the website. I appoligized for not getting it done as quickly as I wanted and he said he understood and sent me a poem he found in his mother's things after she died almost nine years prior. It was about caring for loved ones as they approach the end of their lives. He told me "Projects like the web site are labors of love undertaken by a small (and unfortunately shrinking) group of people, and something that has to take a back seat to more important life events." I assured him I would format what he sent me and get it to Bev to upload to the site.
He wrote later that evening and wanted us to also update the donor form with a "cleaner version" which he also sent. I again assured him we would take care of it. I formatted and sent it on to Bev, telling her that we needed to get this up ASAP...it was really important to Jerry.
Bev got right on it (in spite of her recent back surgery). I e-mailed Jerry the next morning and told him it was done. He died that day. I just thought that everyone should know that he was still putting us all first...right up until his final moments; he was still serving BCA.
My heartfelt thoughts and condolenses to his family during this time. Jerry was a great guy who had it really rough towards the end. It is unfortunate that his final decisions have become public, but my prayer is that those who thought of him as a friend, will remember his example of service, and love of the breed.
I remember a few years ago at the St Louis specialties we were at their club banquet. They were trying to auction off a cute woman's jumper. Jerry put it on and modeled it. Ya just never knew what to expect from him. Smart and serious one minute and a crazy cooter the next. Sure gonna miss him.

She's very pretty, Melissa! Congratulations. I'd love to see her move sometime to see if she moves as good as I thought she would in those younger pictures.
I've seen this girl move and it's one of her best features. I love her effortless straight out movement. I liked her from the first puppy pictures. Congrats, lovely little girl u have there. Lottie
When you go to buy a pup you look at so many things but I had a bulldog pup that I picked every thing was great great jaw good bone great temprement. The one thing I did not check were the feet & the pads & this is so very important this pup had a very odd pad which as he grew was not right it did effect his movement. So when you buy your pup make sure you check those feet & pads as this is the most important thing as they have to carrie him threw his show career. Just one more thing to think about!

Off the top of my head, I have to say that I am really partial to the old Cherokee stuff, especially, Ch. Cherokee Ivanhoe, Ch. Cherokee Yancey, Ch. Lebo's Peaches (bred by Ruth Lebo), etc. I wasn't fortunate enough to see these dogs in person but I admired them very much in their pictures. I tried breeding back to some frozen from that era (Ch. Lebo's Horsefeathers) but it didn't work out for me. The heads and the overall type of those dogs definitely caught my eye. I'm lucky enough to have a copy of a video of some older shows made by a guy named Jeff Atz and in this video contained many of the well known dogs from the relatively recent past. I truly enjoyed seeing video of Ch. Hetherbull Bounty's Frigate and his sire, Ch. Fredlyn's Be Aye. The movement on a Frigate son, Ch. Brumar's Move It On Over was breath-taking. The head type and overall type on National winner, Ch. Tsar's Fat Man's Finale was outstanding. The overall and head type on Ch. Dygros Gilbert was lovely too.
I was also fortunate enough to be able to go over many of the Britishpride dogs while I was in England this year and the head type on those dogs is amazing. When I walked into the Davis' kitchen (Ocobo/Mystyle), there lay Ch. Shakira in a bed and her head type is outstanding - the furrow is gorgeous. Some of the heads in England are so large that I literally couldn't get both hands around them.
I usually look at heads first but I try and really appreciate the different parts of each dog and how well they conform to the Standard. I'm sure I'm leaving out some favorites but this is what came to mind.

I just lost Taker in May he was such a gift from the Kaysinger as I got him at 8weeks & a few days after he came my Buford passed away he filled his dads shoes doing Movies & Tv he was a show dog (quite a handful) and then completed his CD. Buford was not able to jump like Taker.Taker loved his squeaky toy I was doing a movie and he had to chase the actor I gave the actor his squeaky toy there was a huge line of very tall hedges Taker took off I never in a million years belived he could jump over this hedges but he sure did I remember screaming give him the squeaky toy! He was just a clown & full of love. Kim & Burt
Introducing our latest Champion, Bantas FanDancer aka Chealsea.
She is out of Ch. Bantas Good Golly Miss Molly x Ch. Mystyle Warrior Ocobo.
Finished 7/4/08 Sedelia, MO - BOW/BOS. She is pictured here winning a 5-pt major under Mr. Dennis Ehntholt. Thanks for letting us share.
Wow, she looks so much like him. Warrior has other babies that have won Breed and BOS out of the puppy classes at specialties!!! There are also many more puppies that are very close to finishing. He did a great job in this country and left his mark here for sure. Our young boys are maturing beautifully and will be out in the fall. Glad we have some of him in storage for our future!
By the way, Warrior flew back to England, via Holland in January - Kevin Davis said he came out of the crate wagging his little tail - we knew he would arrive safe - he was just that kind of dog!!!

AUCTION: Please continue to work on donation ideas for the specialty show auction. In the past, we have had too many smaller, inexpensive items that don't bring in much money and drag out the auction time. This year, we are trying to limit the live auction to only nicer items that will draw a larger bid. We understand that many of our members may not be able to donate a large item, so we encourage you to team up with another member or two (or more), or make a cash donation (any amount) that we can put towards the purchase of some nice items. Whether or not you're able to donate, we hope you will at least plan to attend the auction at the specialty show banquet on Wednesday, August 13. This is one of our biggest club fund raisers for the year and we greatly appreciate any help you are able to offer!

Emmy's just shy of 14 months, Brett and Christy. She actually finished at the morning specialty of Colorado Springs under Breeder-Judge Mr. Wick Carter. I just got her about two weeks after I saw you guys in Dallas last December when I met Barb and Kelly in Indiana to drop of Tate.
Thanks for all your kind words about Emmy! We are happy with how she is maturing. I think this will finally be the one for my frozen BIS BISS Ch. Hetherbull Bounty's Frigate.
Hi folks! Here is Mugs at 11 months. I wanted to see if anyone could give some feedback on how he looks. I know it is difficult to critique photos.
Thanks!
I started a new Class dog this weekend in Sedalia MO…….This weekend was supposed to be a training weekend as it was a large class entry and he has never set foot in a showring before....
Turns out we came away with 2 4pt majors (Fri and Sat) and RWD on Sunday…..
I share him with you as he is 100% imported bloodlines, although bred in the USA.I know there are many here who follow them…..He is 15 months old

I am happy I finished her CKC but I would love to cross the border and see what we can do there. I think I will wait to see her mature even some more and then we will see.
