Toros are a two horse team. #4 or 44 on D and the C I think is #27 amazing skill players if they come to play then look out. |

Actually the numbers to look out for are #4, # 18 and the C is # 25, 27 also a good player. but your correct, these 3-4 players are dangerous if they come out to play. |

Sounds like Toros may have a few top players moving to AAA next year and a few more that may go, if their not concerned about the quality of the team their going to. This is definately going to hurt the team and it will be challenging to replace them. That said this will be the situation for several AA teams at the end of the season and I don't think these can be fairly classified as "kaboom" scenario's. Although, it can be negatively portrayed that way it could just as easily be argued the time with their present team elevated their game to a AAA level. |

Who are these yo-yo's?? D's are better, F's are better ......... YT is a very balanced team front to back. Just looking at the stats it's easy to see the Toros GA avg is comparable to anyone in the top 8 (with the exception of WestMall) a stat I credit to good "team" defense and goaltending. The GF however shows a greater desparity with approx. a 20 goal spread between them and 5 of the other teams. Toros have played some very low scoring games against the other top 8 teams but haven't been able to put the puck in the net which is probably the #1 reason they are presently sitting in 8th place. |

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 13 2007, 11:19 AM |
Da yo-yo, watch their games, if D wouldn't rush the puck as often as they do, the forwards could play their positions and more goals would come their way. A major issue the Toros have are the rushing D that don't end up doing anything at the end of the rush. |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 13 2007, 11:30 AM |
If any team, like the Toros, has good rushing defense that can get the puck to the other end that's a HUGE asset! One I wish my sons team had. If the team is unable to capitalize on this asset because as YOU say the forwards don't know where to go and end up standing around watching to see how the rushing player does, your problem ain't the rushing player! |

11:19
I to am confused by your post. What do you mean exactly when of say the forwards can't play their "position" because of the rushing D??? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 13 2007, 12:39 PM |
11:19 I've got to agree with these two. That is one stupid post for anyone who knows anything about hockey. Rushing D adds to the offense not take away from the offense. If it takes away at all is its the defense left vulnerable temporarily but if your teams in possession of the puck that doesn't really matter does it.

Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 13 2007, 12:44 PM |
I think what he meant, and I've seen it on other teams is the D will rush with the puck and end up in the corner of the rink and no one to pass to. Seeing this, I've always felt it was a coaching issue, if the coach recognizes that he has kids like this then he should work plays around that player. Let the forwards figure out what to do if they see the D take off.

Can you imagine if this team actually had an X's and O's coach to give them a system instead of beating teams solely on talent?...To me that is the biggest ASSET to have. Is it possible to find one? |

To 1:29, I'm 12:44, that was the point I was trying to get across. I agree, you can have all kinds of talent and without teaching these kids you are not properly coaching them. I see West Mall have very good talent but they have excellent coaching. Watch them carefully, they have plays that they've no doubt practiced over and over. Even if they're beating our team they are still a joy to watch at times. |

Lol, if your going to correct at least do it properly the correct spelling is aren't. The team is made up of good aa players, average aa players and some not so average aa players. At best they have a couple boys who could play aaa, but would just be average. And no offence to the parents but neither of the boys I'm thinking of play defence. |

I find it funny when people write that the Toros are so talented and are just underachieving this year. WM, Terriers, Braves, Royals and maybe even the Jets and Sharks are just as talented. This team overachieved last year and is about where I expected them to be this year (5th to 8th). |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 17 2007, 2:04 PM |
but they are, they are beating teams on talent cause they dont have a system or a good coach to implement that system
|
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 17 2007, 3:19 PM |
2:04, I considered the Toros for this year because they do have a number of talented players and I thought playing with talented kids would help my own son develop. But as you say the team lacked a team concept and relied heavily on individual effort. As much as I liked the talent I just couldn't see my kid contributing the solo effort this team relied on and looked for another team that played more like a team.
Watching this year it appears I made a good call. My sons team does not have the goto kids the Toros have but rather rely heavily on executing the system the coach is teaching them with an all out effort and while his team is not atop the standings my sons is learning the importance of effort and responsibility of playing his position.
Bottomline is the Toros individual talent doesn't really matter because individuals that play as a team will always win out over a team that plays as individuals.

pardon my ignorance, but what exactly do people mean when they talk about "systems"? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 17 2007, 3:38 PM |
Passing the puck at the right time. Having a defenseman carry the puck into the opposing zone and not ending up in the corner with three players on him. The wingers understanding when and how they should be breaking out of a zone when the centre or defenseman starts to carry the puck out. The Centre knowing where to stand when the puck is around a net (offensive or defensive). The wingers being in the right position wherever the puck is when in the opposition's zone.
These are basis things that teams work on over and over and every coach has their own opinions on where kids should be. Some like their centres to hang back and have the wingers dig the puck out when in the attacking zone, others like their centres to be right in the goalies face or behind the net and help with cycling the puck and having one winger in front of the net.
When people use the word system they are really saying "set plays" so that the kids have an idea where they should be. You need two things, kids that will listen and lots of reps of the same thing in practice. Apparently the West Mall kids all played together through novice, this explains why they are so comfortable with each other. Watch them the next time you see them play, the D will pass up to the winger and the winger will make a drop pass, the D will go with it and the winger will drop back to become the D. It's rather seamless and they make it look like they've been doing it for years. They've probably been practicing it for a few years.

Speaking for myself (3:19) at this age systems shouldn't be anything too rigid or complicated. "Systems" should basically involve knowing where you should be on the ice under a variety of basic circumstances and knowing where you should be able to expect your teammates to be.
More time should be spent explaining to kids why playing this way or that way is effective rather than the all too often "just do what I tell you" or trying to program kids thru hours of repetion in practice without explaination. When they understand they don't need to remember because it just makes sense. Understanding and not being too rigid with the "system" allows for creativity and this is where the best players really do shine. Not every kid will go outside the system infact most will not be comfortable doing so. The ones that do will make mistakes but they can also learn from those mistakes and become better players for it.

3:38 This is not the first time you've brought up the "ending up in the corner thing" but I'm visualizing the situation and thinking, would not ANY player being in the offensive zone corner having drawn three players to him not be an absolutely golden scoring opportunity, if the others are effective in reading the situation? Imagine five on five but with three of the opposition in the corner and obviously out of position trying to cover one attacker that leaves just two trying to cover 4 attackers!!
The focus here should not be how or why the player ended up in the corner with 3 players on him because this is a great scenario. For the team to benefit from this golden opportunity though the real question is what should happen next? |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: Toros 97aa next seasonNo score for this post | December 17 2007, 4:50 PM |
To 4:44 you are correct but the problem from what I've seen is the attacking player holding on to the puck and not passing. That's what needs to be taught. Lure the three defensive players into the corner and pass it through them instead of losing it to them and now being caught deep in the offensive zone. |

I love it when people so blatently agree with there own posts.
Nonetheless, I agree this is one of the down falls you see when a player becomes too preoccupied avoiding the defenders and can't (or doesn't) lift his head to look. Not unique to this situation but agreed it does happen. However I disagree with the out of position part because in this situation there should have been a shift in positions and every position should be covered.
The other possible situation in which this play breaksdown is when a player rushes forward or defense doesn't matter and the others stop skating to see if he can score. They are now out of position and have stranded the rushing player. |

It's great to see how all the Toro parents have recognized problems with the way their kids are playing, now only if the coach would read this. Good job parents, it's a shame he wouldn't even consider your advice. Too busy perfecting the hockey stick throw I guess. |
