Erindale way too high and Waterloo way too low.

What has Erindale and Orillia done?
I'd say Port Perry is the current #1 based on winning the Fort Erie tournament and getting past all of Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, Cooksville and Applewood and Meadowvale. |

ER is too high on these lists. They have not beaten any of the other teams to deserve that high of a ranking. 9th or 10th is about right for ER. |

depends, the top goal scorers? Top role players? A mix of defense and offense? You can't have a team of pure goal scorers..at any level |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: 97A RANKINGSNo score for this post | December 10 2007, 11:41 PM |
5:46 has seen more Atom A games than the rest of you combined over the last 3 years. ER is not in the top twenty get over it. Orillia please they wouldn't even come close to winning a B OMHA title this year. The Bluewater loop and the Niagara loop are the deepest loops this year by far. PP is clear #1 team with Oakville second based solely on their Chatham win. They were outplayed in that tourney but they found a way to win against St. Thomas. 6 or 7 BB teams, Essex, Collingwood, Tillsonburg, New Hamburg, Dorchester, Port Hope and undefeated Saugeen Shores that could beat any A team including Port Perry on any given day. Ayr is classified as a C team and they might be one of the top two or three teams in this bracket, they are undefeated since last Christmas. |
|
anonymous (no login) | Re: 97A RANKINGSNo score for this post | December 11 2007, 12:59 AM |
and you've just revealed the problem with this system!!!
These BB centres are BB because of their draw size not because of their talent. How many AAA calibre players play on those BB teams. We know PP has a few. That's been stated. I bet there a quite a few more mixed into these other BB teams because in small town nowhere, there's no where else to go. There are certainly no AAA (or even AA) calibre players on the A teams in the G or MHL. They all get sucked up by the big powerhouses (lol) and the big dreams of the parents.
It can't be fun for PP beating up everyone all the time yet they have to play in a league that is near home and will accept them.
If Oakville A is good enoughh to win a AA tourney - make them AA!!! There no shame in having two AA teams in your city. Your draw would dictate that. If PP is good enough to beat AA teams - then play AA.
What else has a 10 year old kid in Saugeen Shores or Ayr (I don't even know where these places are) got to do but shoot pucks and hang out at the local rink. And they only get enough kids out at tryouts to ice one team. One team made up of possible AAA, AA, A & HL players. But if a kid gets somewhere between 12 - 15 shifts a game (assuming the coach rolls the lines) these AAA kids are out against actual A kids quite a bit and lo-and-behold the final score is 5-1 for the BB team over the big city A team or even AA team ('cuz half the AA teams are just a couple of AA players watered down with A players who's parents want AA on their jackets)
Throw it all out the window!!! Start all over. Get rid of these AAA powerhouse regional teams. Play for the place you live. Be the best team you can. Hit the Xmas break and then set the teams in their respective AAA, AA, or A for the playdowns. Sure you can have a good idea by centre size to begin the season but re-adjust at Xmas. It's only doing the teams & kids damage this way. Get PP some opposition. Maybe Ayr should be A or even AA. We all know that different years produce different skilled crops of kids. These 97's seem to be a good one. It's up to coaches to realize what they've got and try to get their team in a league that is competitive. I remember as a kid the team I played on moved to different leagues a few times. It ended up with a lot more travel but we found better competition and thusly more development. And don't believe those PP telling you that development comes in practices - the framework comes in practices - the actual development is in using that framework in game situations.
My Two Cents.
Cheers...and go get 'em Big City A teams!!!! |

Great comment! Couldn't agree more. You only get better by playing better teams.Eventually the less talented teams will catch you. Case in point West Mall AA-should have played AAA last year. |

I couldn't agree with you more. Small town approach has always been the preferred route.
However the issue starts at the top and the "boys club" in the G feel that they are the hub of the hockey world and should have access to the best players.
It's a sad state
I love it when small town teams beat the big money boys .... love to see that egg on their face. These guys have so much ego it's embarrassing.
How many of these coaches teach our 10 year olds dump and chase hockey ? When are they encouraged to carry the puck and try new stuff ?
I am a long standing member of the G and cannot believe the control freaks that currently manage this system.
Change ... good luck,

the PP coach is great! I noticed this weekend he challenged them when they wern't playing well. They were facing some adversity and they ended up dominating.that is the sign of a good team, and a good coach. PP have a system ...the coach guides them on and off the ice like a junior team and you can tell they find a way of getting the most out of their players.I was really impressed with the D, They never panic and the D to D passes were far beyond this level. Way to go Port Perry! Your team is fun to watch! |

Excellent points above.
Small towns have AAA players.
GTHL & OMHA & MHL kids get snapped up to play AA or AAA
Many "small Ontario towns" will have 3 or 4 kids that make those teams tick!! |
|
Anonymous (no login) | Re: 97A RANKINGSNo score for this post | December 11 2007, 5:04 PM |
If Port Perry has 3 or 4 kids that are close to being AAA players (even if they are so-called "top AA" kids) then that would explain why they can beat many of the good "A" teams. |

Would you really want to move to AA if your goal is to win the OHF Championship...
97 Lakeshore Predictions - August 14 2007, 6:37 PM
"" The thought process is if the PP team can advance to the OMHA's A finals would give them a chance to compete in the OHF. This team will likely have 3 or 4 kids make the move to try out for central AAA next season. It will be the last time they will play together. Under no circumstances does the team believe they are a lock to win the OMHA's, but giving them a chance for a true Ontario Championship is there intent. ""

It will end up being another trophy in a box that brings back the same amount of memories as the mini sticks game in the hallway at the hotel!!!! Beleive me!! The kids don't care. Of course, they want to win. But they will play whoever is in their way...OHF level, league playoffs, regular season, sleepover tourneys...it doesn't matter to them. It's the parents that want the OHF crest!!! |

20-25 years ago I won 3 OMHA Championships. It is nice when we walk into our home rink and see the banners from a team I played on from the 80's.
My kids ask if I played on any of those teams. I am happy to say yes.
Memories last a lifetime. Maybe it is not the NHL, but a old teammate of mine wears his OMHA ring rather than his OHL Memorial Cup ring. Home grown roots. I am sure you have not played the game yourself.
A OHF banner would be nice as this would be the first for a PP team.
There is no doubt that this Atom team with face a big hill to climb. That is why the rewards are so high. Giving themselves the challenge were a goal is in reach is what sport is all about.
PP playing AA would only compete and would have a hard time winning a series. There are 10 top A and BB level teams that can win this.
Luck and hard work will be the key to success.

Notice PP's Atom team are winning big in the AE category also. Is that because the pool of "players" you could choose from was large, or is it just there is a big drop off in the small town AE loops? |

Go ahead and make a case for moving up?
For example, between Cooksville, Meadowvale and Applewood...what is the season record between these 3 teams?
Or in previous tournaments (this year) who did you beat , what was the score?
If you won by three goals then you should be able to move up above a team slightly higher (if you beat them).
This is all N54 fun!! Same old stuff.

Finally someone that knows hockey ranking the top 5 teams. The only alteration I would make is to eliminate Waterloo as they are truly a AA team.
1. Valley East based on Bell Cup
2. Port Perry very strong core players
3A Oakville finally putting their performance ahead of their mouth
3B Tillsonburg underaged squad competing with the big boys
4. St. Thomas great team if they would only stick to hockey
5. Temiskaming plays tough old school hockey |

They play in a houseleague division. avoid the big teams. other than Valley East who have they played? One descent team and they LOST. They shouldnt even be in the top 20. Your BB or CC or whatever the heck it is. Go back to playing the houseleague teams in that division. That way you can all feel like you are the best and forget about Valley East, Oakville, Tillsonburg, St.Thomas, Erindale and every other top team you cant compete with.
Go away now, you're now boring me to no end. |

Good showing by both VE and PP in Ottawa
Dont listen to negative comments from MHL parents, they are bitter that their teams can't compete in tournaments outside MHL/GTHL.
Orillia tournament - ER beaten by Temiskaming
Fort Erie tournament - CO failed to make playoffs - PP won tourney
Silver Stick tournament - ER spanked by Oakville
etc, etc.

Being a spectator watching this team they had two other players tied for the tournament lead in scoring.
Add the two top D and that is when this team dominates. All 3 forwards play on the same line and ware down the opposition. One out and the other sick, VE put a 2 man shadow on the last forward to shut him down.
Nobody on this team was making excuses however in a series I would take PP all the way. |

CO is the only team from the MHL 97A loop that has won anything important in the last 2 seasons and that was the MHL A Championship last season. No team out of this loop can win anything IMPORTANT when they play outside of this loop. Only thing left this season is Playdowns as no MHL 97A team is going to SS Finals.
Why is this? |

Must be
1. Valley East
2. Oakville
then next tier is PP until they prove something.
I watched many games at the Silver Stick and both Valley East and Oakville were the best 2 teams.
In the final Oakville played mediocre and Valley East played well and got a well deserved win.
Tills - terrible
St. Thomas - average team.
Best American teams were Hampton and Oakland - lots of speed.
Congrat to Valley East and Oakville - you guys proved you were the best.

I will agree that Tillsonburg was terrible this weekend. Not enough depth to compete against the elite A teams. Top end talent can compete but bottom end kills them in elite A tournies. Coming off a very physical OMHA series the day before hasn't helped the cause either. Simply not good enough to win last weekend period. |
