How is it a coach who has been criminally charged for violent offences, still remains on the bench with our kids? How often are coaches checked?

how does this happen? Aren't they obligated to step down or at least disclose the risk to the organization...should parents not be informed, seems really risky from a legal stand point, not to mention a huge safety issue.

Must be a friend of the 3 Stooges. Send an anonymous letter to the Toro exec stating your concerns. Even an unsigned report (Speak Out) must be investigated. Make sure you never divulge your name or you and your family will be forced out of toroland. Make sure you send a copy of the letter to at least 6 executive members and make sure Orono and Port Hope rep gets a copy, they would be happy to help. Copy to the OMHA!

Definately not your own, like you said, you and your family will be tossed out of toroland. Who can be trusted to actually do something about the situation and not just shut someone out to shut them up. I think yours is a great idea to submit a complaint to all of the execs. Its ok for parents to question who is on the bench with our kids and how are they being treated. Why do we feel that we somehow jeopardize our kids hockey experience by checking up and questioning how things are done? Parents need to stick together and stand behind one another, who cares who is making the complaint or the question....the point is there is concern that there is someone influencing our kids who should not be in such a position of authority. Isn't that reason enough to investigate. Instead of pointing the finger at who is raising the concern, lets investigate...all I'm sayin. If it is indeed correct, which I believe it to be, who wants their kid coached by someone who has a violent criminal history....what parent is going to be ok with that? It is the responsibility of the organization to do their best to ensure it doesn't happen, and if for some reason it has happened...FIX IT, immediately.

That being said, I will remain anonymous.

All the coaches have to have a police check done. Are you sure it's not a rumour? I would hate to ruin someones rep, just for a rumour. I would definately double check the info first.

A 'current', up to date, background check on all the coaches would put any rumour to rest I would think. It is the responsibility of the exec to follow the correct process!?!, and if some concern is brought to their attention, they should investigate it by requesting the current coaches to submit an up to date check and reviewing them and making the necessary coaching changes if need be, before the next season starts. No ones reputation needs to be ruined. I am confident that the exec would handle it confidentially and professionally, however not at any safety or legal risk. Its kinda their neck too if there is speculation and they didn't investigate it. After all, whats more important than our kids safety. Its not a witch hunt.

Maybe the question of what a police check actually checks needs to be addressed. From what i was told a police check only covers "vulnerable sectors" which is any violence or devient criminal behavior against children or domestic situations. I don't know if anything else is covered.

police checks are mandatory.

Police checks are on the police computer, CPIC, and it checks for any criminal charges against you. On your application you have to state whether you are dealing with a "vulnerable sector" ie; children. Then you have to state for what, where and age groups. The computer then checks for anything related in that area.

The police check, while mandatory, only checks for what an individual had been caught and charged with. As parents, it is your due diligence to look for things that could be construed as "out of the ordinary". While not conducting a witch hunt, unmarried or non parent coaches are always the top of the list. Make sure your team follows the Two Deep Rule, by asking your kids. Talk to your children as well and make them street smart. You don't need to go into specifics but, you as a parent need to make your children aware that there are some real sickos out there. Ruining anothers reputation though on unfounded rumors is wrong.

Fear of reprissal from the executive is so very real in this case. Just check the backgrounds of those in charge. you will see. Be safe. Demand proof that the people around your kids are safe. Assault! And Adult out of control around kids! Thats wrong

agreed they are mandatory. The VS check includes all charges, pending and registered as well as outstanding orders ie:probation, prohibition orders. If the organization gets the checks done every 2 years, then coach could submit a clean background check on day, get arrested the next and no one knows until the next check is submitted. All data bases are checked for VS: which are CPIC, local, rcmp pardoned sexual offences.

If you're uneasy complaining to the Exec, why not just call the governing body (OMHA, Alliance, whichever) -- surely they would enforce it -- it's a Hockey Canada rule, no? Surely insurance wouldn't cover him?

I hope it is being investigated. As a parent on the team, how do we find out about our coaches? Asking for their background check sounds like a good way to get your kid stuck on the bench. Especially if the coach has something to hide. Do we go to the executive?

Tread wisely on this one. Friends had a horrible similar experience. Spoke up, an investigation ensued, and very little was done. Parents complained ALL year re abuse of the kids, yet when it came time to step up to the plate to voice their concerns in a 'legal' forum, they rolled over, and claimed all was 'good', and there was no abuse. Why, you ask? Because having their child have another 'A' was more important than rooting out an abusive coach. Parents are often worse than the culprit, because they turn a blind eye, all in the name of living through their "superstar" kid. In effect, in many cases, the parents are cowards, and end up enabling this kind of outrageous behaviour. What a terrible life lesson to teach their children.
A vicous cycle that is repeated year after year. I feel so sorry for kids that have parents that have no problem bashing the abuser behind his/her back, but lack the backbone to put an end to it.
