Hi Folks;
This is most likely the earliest Rolex wristwatch designed for military use. It was made during the period of the First World War, (1914-18), when men first used wristwatches. It is most unusual in that the case is made from gunmetal, this was the most utilitarian metal and cheaper than silver.
However as officers had to buy their own wristwatches, most of them paid the additional premium for a silver case; thereby making the gunmetal one much rarer.
Checking my records, I see that I have owned over 80 silver Rebbergs but this is only the second gunmetal one.
The case is double hinged and has a brand new original spec glass (not plastic) fitted.
The original black enamel (porcelain) dial has is sunk for the white small seconds and has skeletonised luminous full arabic numerals, gilt steel skeleton luminous style hands and a large winding crown. These early Rolex watches are rarely signed on the dial by Rolex although both the case back and the movement are also signed. The movement is the rhodium finished, 7 jewel Rolex rebberg calibre. These watches were some of the very first men's Rolex watches ever made and were almost all bought by officers in the allied armies during the First World War.
The watch has been recently serviced, runs & keeps good time (bearing in mind it is over 80 years old, so do not expect quartz accuracy).
It takes a 12mm strap and the original leather one is still fitted in the interests of authenticity. However a new one will also be supplied with the watch.
Diameter 34mm; Lug to Lug 39mm; Height 12mm.
