How often should I service my timepiece?
People frequently ask us how often they should get their watches serviced. Like any other mechanical device, vintage watches require a certain amount of care and attention. As a rule of thumb, a watch should be serviced every three to four years to in order to assure optimum performance and to minimize premature wear…running a “dried out” watch is similar to running a car with no oil. Also, any dramatic change in a piece's timekeeping abilities is a good indicator of a service being needed.
What is done in a typical service?
As part of a typical service, the movement is dismantled, cleaned, oiled and reassembled. This is a time-consuming job and can only be carried out by a qualified watchmaker. To round off the service, the movement goes through an exacting series of tests, in several positions to ensure that the timepiece keeps optimal time while on the wrist.
The separate stages in a watch service are as follows:
- Dismantle the watch and movement, clean all parts, reassemble movement and watch, oil, adjust movement and put through final timing tests to that each timepiece is running as best it can.
- Replace worn parts and crystals (as available.
- Ultrasonically clean and polish case and metal bracelet.
