The design is based upon German military aviator's watches of the 1930s and 1940s, faithfully replicating the classic instrument and Pilot's dials but placing them in a stainless steel cases with proportions more like those of a modern military wristwatch, albeit with a decidedly larger face (case diameter is 38mm, 42mm, lug to lug, overall thickness is 8mm). The original watches are not only rare and expensive, they are also huge and clunky -- really too big to be worn on the wrist (they were designed to be worn over heavy flight suits, often on the upper arm or leg, and had pocket watch movements inside).
