Grandparents in their younger days

My paternal grandparents kept their photos in a cardboard box, completely jumbled up. One of my favorite pictures from that box is this one:

I don't know where or when it was taken, but I love it. They seemed so playful and young, and I never knew them like that. They always seemed OLD to me. A little tidbit about my grandparents: she was nearly 5 years older than him (born in 1908, he in 1912) and she lied about her age for years to avoid the scandal it would have caused. She died in 1991 and he in 1998.

This picture is of my maternal grandparents in Atlantic City 51 years ago this month:

In contrast to that last picture, the reason I like this one is that it is exactly like I remember them together - walking arm-in-arm. I can't think of any little tidbits about them offhand. He died in 2001, and she's still around and sharp as a tack at 86.

Those are really excellent photos (m)

You look a lot like the maternal grandfather, don't you? Those bathing suits are absolutely fabulous.

I don't have anything like these--my paternals were in an UGLY divorce in the mid-1940s, that left my grandmother alone to raise three kids under ten--so pics of him are seldom seen. I looked up his yearbook pictures at Duke (I knew he'd played football there in the 1930s)--so I know what he looked like, but ... My maternals divorced in the 1940s or early 1950s too. I doubt there are any pics of them together--my mother was their only kid, she'd have them if they existed.

Enjoy your treasures! Do you store them or display them somehow?

Penny

Yes, I suppose I do...

I think my mother looks a LOT like him, and I'm told I look like my mother (although I don't really see it). That's the grandfather whose baby picture looks a lot like Eamonn's:

I used to display the bathing suit picture, but it got put away when we moved 8 years ago and I only rediscovered it recently. And the Atlantic City picture I only got recently. My cousin emailed it to me. I'm planning on putting both of them somewhere around here, but I haven't done it yet.

It's too bad your grandparents had that kind of history. Both of mine were married more than 50 years and were always great role models to me in that respect.

I love your pictures!

Great, great pictures. I'll have to dig out some of mine. My maternal grandparents pretty much eloped, so no wedding pictures. (She brought her mom, though. His parents weren't for it. DUMB!) Then they were poor as can be, so I don't know if I have a picture of them together. Have lots of my paternals. They didn't quite make it to 50 years. He died in 1972 and they were married in 1925. Thanks, I love them, too.

I have a whole box of pictures from my Dad's family, including plenty of my grandparents - some of my great-grandparents, too!

There are also a lot of pictures available of my Mom's family, but I don't have that many. My uncle has digitized quite a few, so I need to get myself a copy of the CD sometime.

Photos are so easy to come by in my family I sometimes find myself surprised that there are people out there who never had a picture taken of them. I had a hard time finding a picture of Neil's paternal grandparents a while back when I needed them for a project, but we eventually dug up something - they were in a group shot taken at Neil's parents' wedding.
