THE ELF
A noise awoke me
In the middle of sleep
Interrupting my dreams
The leaves rustled in the breeze
And the world dozed
In the autumn reverie
Of a November dawn
When I heard that sound again
Carried by the wind
Full of morning dew
As I went outside
The noise echoed around me
And the fields looked grey
Under the light
Of the rising sun
Within the infinite shadows
Of a bush
I saw an elf
Crying all alone
I covered him
With my gown
Knitted in autumn leaves
And wiped his tears
With hands wrapped in dreams
