The Owen Sound Quantum Properties NorthStars found out the hard way on Friday night that there is no quit in the Oakville Titans.
The shorthanded Titans bounced back from a 3-0 deficit after one period to beat the NorthStars 8-6 in OLA Senior B lacrosse action at the Bayshore.
It was the first home loss of the year for the NorthStars and it didn't come at a very good time. A win would have kept them within one point of first place in a very tight race for top spot in the seven-team league. Instead, Oakville moves into a tie for first and Owen Sound is down to fifth, three points behind, with only three games left in the regular season.
Tyler Gibbons and Brandon McMillen each scored two goals in a losing cause. Bryan Kazarian and Adam Jones each added a goal and two assists. Travis Gibbons chipped in three assists.
The NorthStars looked good in grabbing an early 3-0 lead but the Titans outworked, outran, outshot and outscored them over the final two periods despite showing up with only 16 runners.
While Oakville's defence was solid for much of the evening, Owen Sound's was porous, allowing a number of breakaways, many of which the Titans capitalized on.
Nicholas Grasby led Oakville with a hat trick while singles went to Ken Coulson, Mike Gillan, Simon Desousa, Michael Rollings and Dan Hamlett. Goalie J Preece assisted on all three of his team's goals in the third period as the Titans snapped a 5-5 tie.
Preece made 31 saves for the win while Scott Komer stopped 33 shots for Owen Sound.
The NorthStars drop to 7-5-1-0 while the Titans improve to 9-5-0-0.
Owen Sound is at home again next Wednesday to Sarnia. Game time is 8 p.m. at the Bayshore.
