The head coach from the 2009, 0-16 season is going to be the general manager for 2010. Fact. If he was out to lunch for the whole season as coach, why would the team think people would want to play for him???

Tier II:
North Shore 8
Akwesasne 10

Final
Aces 10
Frogpond 8

There was a lot of hate going on for the Aces this year. Not sure why? Something to do with their stacked roster maybe?? Hah. Or the scheduling??

I just have to add the semis with the Aces & Akwesasne was some good entertainment. Akwesasne nearly had em! Would have been great to see.

No one said you couldn't...

by gabbyspree (Login gabbyspree)

Nothing in the rules says you cant stack your team. Only main stipulation is having to be of native desent! No reason why anyone else couldn't have got a better team together to challenge the mighty aces!! They sent the same team to Akwesasne last year and didn't win it, but nobody was complaining then. Why wouldn't snake island and Akwesasne make one team, instead of dividing up the talent?!?! And same goes for any other team that wants to compete.

I never said anything otherwise. Other people have been denying the team was stacked.

by Sect (Login aussiesnow)

C'mon now, honestly. That wasn't the same team from last year. There were a few 'big' additions to the Aces roster at this years cup. I never said there was anything wrong with stacking a team. If the Aces got to bring in all these big name players to play with them, then so be it.

My issue was denying it. A stacked roster is a stacked roster.

And why would the other nations have to divvy up their teams? Just so they'd have a chance against a stacked team?! If there are forty guys out there that want to play, they should be allowed to play. What are they suppose to deny a guy the right to play because he's not good enough to play against a bunch of pros?

Absolutley

by gabbyspree (Login gabbyspree)

If a guy isn't good enough to make a team then he shouldn't be playing! Thats like saying they should make 3 or 4 more NLL teams so EVERYONE has somewhere to play! I do admit, that YES, the aces are stacked! But as I mentioned, theres more than enough talent to go around and have a team that could better the aces! Frog Pond is only 2 or 3 guys off from giving the aces a challenge, and we all know that unless Akwasane combines all there talent they wont ever have a chance in hell at competing with the aces, let alone beat them! Just not enough talent!
It has been and will always be dominated by a team from Six Nations....HELL...we should start calling it the SIX NATIONS CUP!!! LOL..........GO ACES and FROGPOND!!!

RE: If a guy isn't good enough to make a team then he shouldn't be playing! Thats like saying they should make 3 or 4 more NLL teams so EVERYONE has somewhere to play!

I wasn't implying Joe Random trying to play, I was referring to the SrB and CanAm players who made up of probably about 90% of the teams playing in this years cup... These players all play together the entire year and just because of one team they are suppose to suddenly deny one of their teammates the right to play with them?

And I'm not trying to deny or take away from the Aces victory. I think everyone is aware of the caliber of talent from that reserve.

Well...

by gabbyspree (Login gabbyspree)

This is a very compettive tourney and if are just showing up to play some games, with the "Just happy to be here" type of mentality then thats exactly what you'll get!
The warriors cup at the start of the season is a tourney for you to have fun and give you the chance to play with whomever you want.

But this is a top notch all native tourney, not some beer/house league tourney that divides the teams up equally to make sure you and everyone else gets a good chance at winning the cup!
Lets get real, this about winning the nations cup and the first place prize, not about making friends! Hell, im sure the Aces would have no problem kicking some of there "Family Members" off there team if it meant winning a championship! Like i said, its about WINNING, nothing more, nothing less!

If you or your team can't take it that your team lost, then maybe you should think of taking up a new sport, Or perhaps joining a league where FUN, comes before winning!

you are misinterpreting my post ...again

by Sect (Login aussiesnow)

I never mentioned anything about treating this like a beer league (unless of course you think SrB & CanAm players are beer league players!) OR the tournament being all about "fun". Nor did I mention anything about players with a 'just glad to be here' attitude. If people are feeling so defensive about the Aces win then maybe they should question themselves why that is.

I only came as a spectator, I had no vested interest in who won or who loss. Just went to watch some lacrosse. I posted something in jest and people have been on the offensive ever since.

I think the original poster was right though, aces din't have many fans. I think that's all he was tryna point out. They were a stacked team, and rightly so with all their pro players and so be it that a lot of them are related, no big deal. But you look at them - they are the veteran team, Maulers went with a lot of young players with a few veterans while the Aces were the other way around.
At least the cup stays at Six...

Iroquois Nations Cup hosted by Ohsweken Aces

OHSWEKEN - The Ohsweken Aces, two-time Iroquois Nations Cup champions, are hosting for the 2009 edition of the Iroquois Nations Cup being held at the Gaylord Powless Arena from Thursday, September 17th to Sunday, September 20th. This year will the 5th time (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007) Six Nations of the Grand River Territory will host the Iroquois Nations Cup. A Six Nations team has won the Iroquois Nations Cup every year Six Nations has hosted the tournament.

The Iroquois Nations Cup is the re-birth of the All-Native Championship which was held in the mid-1960s to the early 1970s by lacrosse legend, Candian Lacrosse Association (CLA) and Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) Hall-of-Fame inductee, Ross Powless. CLA First Nations director Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell helped revive the tournament in 1997 when it was held in Akwesasne.

The Iroquois Nations Cup is a CLA sanctioned event. All games will adhere to the CLA rules and regulations with one exception, Native-only eligibility. Teams will play at least 3-games each with semi-finals and championship final being played on Sunday.

All teams will be made up of individual players from Iroquois communities which are made up of Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca and Tuscarora ancestry. The competing teams will represent communities like Akwesasne, Onondaga, Tonawanda, Newtown, Senecas at Cattaraugus and of course, Six Nations.

Snake Island Muskies are the defending Iroquois Nations Cup champions as they defeated the Frog Pond Maulers in the 2008 final held at the Anowarako:wa Arena in Akwesasne which was hosted by Iroquois Lacrosse Association. The Muskies win ended a two-year reign of the Ohsweken Aces who were the Iroquois Nations Cup Back-2-Back champions in 2006 and 2007.

The Ohsweken Aces were the 2008 Tier II champions as they defeated the Island Redmen 8-7 in a thrilling Tier II final.

Tickets for the four-day event are $ 40.00 for the Iroquois Nations Cup Tournament Pass which will get you into every single game of the tournament.
Individual One-day Passes are $ 15.00 each while Seniors and Children under-12 are free.

Iroquois Nations Cup Winners:

I'm missing a lot of good players playrer profiles but I need the date of birth to create a profile. If anyone reading this knows the date of birth of any of the following players I would be very grateful. Height, weight and which way the players shoot would be nice but is not totally necessary as the more information that is enterred the better the profiles are:

Sr. Player Status

by BIG WOOD (Login big_wooden_stick)

I for one would like to see a change in the rules & the player status rule brought back if there was ever one?

-a player who has played Sr. A/Major/NLL/MLL must keep his status as a "Pro" player though the summer, if NLL.
-a Player can only lose his Pro Status if he sits out a year or two, from playing for a Pro/SrA/NLL team.
or maybe
-Sr B teams are only allowed 1 or 2 Pro Status Players.

Maybe this is something the CLA or OLA can fix. if they want to keep their Sr B Leagues competetive. maybe they should set some rules in place.

having said that Congrats to The Owen Sound Woodsmen on their back to back Presidents Cup Championships!!

question.

by . (Login oletimelax)

so what do all the " pro " players do that cant make a major team? or dont live near one?

are there going to be special exemptions for them?

how would the major drafts work? and affiliations with sr b clubs?

how would this affect bc, allberta and the can am, amongst others? do these rules apply to them to? would they all still get to pick up 3 players right before the presidents cup?

or would the CLA say no you cant do that anymore cause umm... thats not fair? err i mean competitive?

as ive stated before. players play sr b for reasons outside of the fact that they want to win.

cant please everyone. myself included.

Call-ups

by (Login laxflife)

There is a difference for a B.C. team getting 3 call-ups that are registered "B" players from other teams , or "C" call-ups. As stated earlier if a player plays N.L.L. all year or some of it , or "A "ball all year or most of it , he should not compete in a "B" Championship.
Pretty simple concept.!!!!!
The rules and backdoor ways to get these players registered on a team quite honestly are a joke, that takes away from the whole leaugue and players that play in it. Hope the CLA can look at this to make it a more equal playing field for all teams across the country. Limit these players to 1 or 2 per team.
If you want to play "B" lacrosee because of the reasons you mention then great.......if this is the case stay off the Senior "A" and N.L.L. rosters.

Congratulations to Tri-City who showed up with only 15 runners , which included 3 call-ups from other B teams. A great showing in the competition.Well earned win over Niagara to get to the final!!!

See you all in Burnaby next year!!!!

callups

by (Login absrlax)

What a crock! If a player wants to play B ball for whatever reason, who cares! It only enhances the competition. After playing NLL all year for peanuts, a guy has to make a living & probably has better work prospects playing at home. The committment level is far less & they still get to keep a stick in their hands. I can tell you factually, that the best young Alberta players will go to A ball in hopes of getting noticed by NLL scouts. That obviously has a direct effect on B ball in Alberta. We encourage, not discourage that at our own jeapordy. The NLL players that play B ball in Ab. are older, more established players that just want to play & I'm sure that is the case for the rest of the associations. Why get the CLA involved when there is no real reason for it, other than someone who doesn't really know the facts, beaking off.

That's fine

by Joe (Login joe_cee)

But players should not be permitted to play a full MSL schedule and Sr. B at the same time. Simply have a limit on the number of games a Sr. B carded player can play up in the MSL before he is deemed to be an MSL player. That will deal with 90% of he problems. If you have reasons to play B, then play B, but don't eexpect to play MSL also.

That seems to be a problem out east, that scenario doesn't happen in AB.or BC.There are rules in place to prevent that from happening in both associations.

alberta doesnt have those rules, as they dont have major or Sr A teams.

so, what are those rules?

which rules

by absrlax (Login absrlax)

Those are the key words, "as far you know". These rules are part of our operating policy & they restrict this kind of movement. If a player leaves A to play B, he must get a release from the A team & it must be before July 1. We do get that scenario at times. But it is handled up front not sliding in later. He can not be registered in 2 divisions.

yes, thats why i asked.

by . (Login oletimelax)

ontario has the same rule, its called reclassification, in order for a player to sign in sr b, they must be reclassified. which isnt automatic.

there is no difference. sr b players in bc can play with sr a clubs the same way as here.thats called an affiliation. just because it isnt done as much there, doesnt make it any more right or wrong.

You must be kidding

by absrlax (Login absrlax)

So, according to your pretzel logic, its OK to play all year in an A league, & then go play B in the playoffs. I guess Alberta should affiliate all their players that play A (Kaleb Toth/Geoff Snider et al) & bring them down for the playoffs. I have never seen BC use top rated A players in a B championship & why don't they use a guy like say, a Lewis Ratcliffe in this type of a scenario? Probably 2 words, pride & integrity. Look them up in the dictionary, it could be enlightening. This could on forever, so rest assured you are in the minority when it comes to this issue of WIN AT ALL COSTS. There has to be a line somewhere.

by LDA48 (Login LDA48)

You have been saying a lot of things about making changes and how things should be, but you are wasting everyone's time speaking about it on this forum. No changes will result from your sermons. If you are serious and not just a windbag you or your organization should submit a request to the OLA to have the changes made to the constitution and by-laws and it will be dealt with at the AGM. Otherwise stop stirring the pot and leave it to the people who are elected to make the decisions and know how the rules work. OLA teams operate within the existing rules and should not be bad mouthed for doing so.

Time for OwenSound to move up to Sr A

by laxkixstx (Login laxkixstx)

Come on Woodies, time to get some lacrosse balls and make the jump from Sr B to Sr A. And dah of course there is a difference between the two. Young men strive to make a Jr A team because they are a highly skilled player. I've seen flack on here is past years about young men remaining back in Jr B when they are clearly Jr A calibur. This of course is suppose to apply to men as well. Why is it glory for Woodies, when clearly the majority should be playing in the Sr A league? Is this the only way Owen Sound can get a ring is to play with players who will never make the NLL or in some cases even a Sr. A team.

OS is a very good team, however,if they really want to prove to Lax fan's in OS how skilled they are why not make the move to SrA and try and win a Mann cup!!!

OR..

by . (Login oletimelax)

youre arguments, while being partially valid, arent near enough to make a team move to the MSL.

there are far more things to consider when a player decides what league to play in.

and even more when it comes to changing the league at which you compete.

keep in mind the differences netween major and sr b. major is a for the most part, a weekday league. there are plenty of games during the week. not to mention more games, and more playoffs.

what i am getting at is that there is much more commitment. i can safely say that more than a few of the woodsmen that could be playing major arent for those reasons.

there will always be those that wont accept reality, instead substituting their own opinion as such.

Who you kidding

by fastest-game (Login fastest-game)

Should you not be saying, other teams need to start recruiting better sponsors that with give more money so they can pay their players (way to buy a championship).

I remember back when this league started in 2000, no one got paid and a very good Brooklin Merchant team made it to the gold metal game in the prez, back when guys played the game because they loved this great game.

I think this game is going down hill and fast, when non pro leagues are paying players.

Thanks.

gotta love facts.

by . (Login oletimelax)

well youre clearly informed.

i can tell you from experience, that in any league, when teams pay, they dont hide it.

i can also tell you for a fact, that yes, the amount players get for gas is different.

if you care to see what the differences are, feel free to look up a referees mileage book. thats how it is payed out. what refs get paid for gas, the woodies get paid for gas.

and believe me yaps, me knowing for a fact, is a whole hell of a lot different than you knowing for a fact.

fyi, i was paid $726.35 per game and practice, as well as a seadoo as is the norm for all woodies players.

its a great place to play, so now, go tell your buddies that you have it on good authority that woodies players are all paid copious sums of money solely for gas purposes. cause " thats how they try to hide it"

idiot.

PS. the reason we get so much for gas isnt for our cars, its obviously for our seadoos. gas guzzlers i tell ya.

ok for all of you people out there, crying about who should be on the allstar team,i heard each team had to pick five players from other teams but there own,so thats how the all star team was pick,so if you dont like who was on there, blame the coaches or gm or who ever pick them.

thats normally how all star teams are picked, but that isnt how the teams were picked this year. teams were not handed ballots to choose players.

how they did choose them, i dont know. i would assume the tournament committee chose them.

so just let it go. noone really cares.

Six Nations Sting Rumour...

by RoadiesGoalie31 (Login RoadiesGoalie31)

I heard from a couple of Sting fans and a couple of non-Sting Can-Am players that the Sting may be joining the OLA Sr B league in 2010. It was also mentioned that the Ohsweken Warriors will fold and join forces with the Sting.

I don't see any reason why the Sting wouldn't/couldn't make the jump to OLA. But it's not gonna happen cuz then where would all those Jr masters players play?!?!?! LOL There's to much adversity between the teams for them to join together.

rules

by BIG WOOD (Login big_wooden_stick)

the reason he was called on his face mask was because that style is illegal. everyone must play by the same rules. maybe by them calling him on this, it might have saved him a injury. look at the same facemask the Muskies goalie was using. Naigaras #7 who has one hell of a shot by the way. put the ball thru this guys face mask, crushin a cheek bone.
at the end of the season the sting were called for using two illegal players. overage Jrs. who didnt have their tranfer papers to go from OLA to CLA. a mistake by the office of the sting.
However the rules are set in place so everyone can follow them. both teams know this. & use them they did !

END OF STORY see you'se all next year !!

Niagara Hawks "earned" their way into the President's Cup. They took their bumps and bruises, they took their fines and suspensions for illegal players, they played in playoffs and came out on top. They made it to the semi finals and congrats to them. Yeah the Sting won the Bronze medal and congrats to them too.. lets look forward to next year and stop whining.. or better yet.. go whine to the Turtle Island, maybe they will listen...

Call Niagara whatever you want!! Those guys worked hard for there wins. Six Nations has always butted heads with them & everytime Niagara won they whinned about something else. They won! They have the cup! & your coach knows that if they didn't pull Fin you wouldn't of had bronze. Sting thinks they're so tough let them play again with Fin in net. Then see if you can still talk the BULLSH** that's coming out of your a**!!!!!!!!! Atleast they never got spanked twice by Owen Sound, they beat them!! Can you say that?? Quit talking sh** & take your losses as they come!! Hawks took there losses every year the Sting screwed them!!!!

This debate will go on forever! Who really cares if bensch or anyone major player or NLL player decides to play senior"B". I am from six nations and played for the Mohawk Stars/Warriors and loved playing against these guys. Its great compettion! It's even better when ya beat them. Not only that but as much I hate owen sound I love being apart of the Nations/Owen Sound rivalary. Nothing in the OLA beats it and I wish everyone as a player could experience it! But lets get real...who really cares who plays for who! Hell, in 07 we had Roger Vyse, Cory Bomberry, Ken Montour, Clay Hill who are all excellent players with the Bandits and Major calibur palyers, but was anyone complaining then?!?! NO...Cuz we got our asses kick! So quit being so sour! Owen Sound won the cup fair and square! There's no reason other programs can't do the same!!

format needs another look

by Laker (Login turftoe17)

I've seen this happen in minor tournaments as well but a tournament of this magnitude really makes this format look bad. Tri City with 1 win advances while 3-1 Okotos that beat Tri City goes home. A tournament where teams don't play other teams in their pool creates a horrible tie break formula. Pool A has 3 teams at 3 and 1, if they played each other head to head solves any tie break. Must be a huge frustration for Okotos who travelled from out west largley at each players own expense to not advance with 3 wins and only 1 loss to the heavily favoured Owen Sound. What happened to Owen Sound vs Niagara?
On a side bar I watched the Okotos - Massena game and if it wasn't for a couple lost officials that let Massena back in this game the goal differential would have been more and Okotos likely would have won the tie break.

Hawks vs Woodies

by (Login hopps)

I would have to say that this was the best game thus far in the tournament! Both teams played hard, it was full of good hits good ball movement and both teams not wanting to give an inch.

That being said the better team THAT NIGHT won whether or not the Woodies sat half their team or not doesn't matter just sounds like the Woodies thought they could walk all over the Hawks because they are a CAN-AM team ...

I myself am looking forward to Saturday and hope that both teams make it to the finals! This is a rematch that I am looking forward to seeing and both teams will have their best players playing!

Best of luck to Six Nations, Tri-City, Niagara and Owen Sound!

Well said. Lets just leave it as it is and move on. We all knew it was only a matter of time before there was some crazy explanation as to why Owen Sound lost that game. You knew there had to be something LOL!!
It was a great game either way you look at it and I really do hope to see these two teams play in the final!!

another reason this is a bad format

by (Login turftoe17)

I don't blame Owen Sound for resting players in a nothing game and avoiding possible injury but this is another reason this format doesn't work. In a national championship teams should be putting in their best effort against each opponent, if you get a big lead then rest your key players but this strategy clearly flaws the equality of copetition; Owen Sounds first 3 opponents didn't have the benefit of playing a lesser team at any point in the tournament and this game is what allowed Niagara to move on. It is what it is but they didn't earn their spot the same way others would have.

Format

by Hopps (Login hopps)

I do agree with you ... the format of the tournament needs to be looked at once the tournament has been completed. I hope that the committee for next years tournament looks at this format and goes to a round robin tournament where each team plays each team and the top 4 teams move onto the championship rounds ... It is unfair that a team that goes 3-1 has to pack their bags and head home when a team that is 1-3 gets to move on ... hopefully that will change in the future.

The decision

by (Login LDA48)

to sit these players had nothing to do with "the Woodies thinking they could walk all over the Hawks because they are a Can-Am Team". It was simply a smart coaching move to rest players for a game that had absolutely no meaning for Owen Sound. They already clinched 1st place in their division so why not save your better players for the following game that has a lot of meaning.

for sure..

by gabbyspree (Login gabbyspree)

For sure sitting your better players would be the best thing to do, ABSOLUTLEY!! But for some reason, Kazarian, Benesch,Sanderson,Burke,McLeod,Milnes,Campbell,Quinton,Arbuckle all got in the game...Weird!! What the hells going on...they should have been sitting out?!?!?!
I do agree that chugger and Koneczny having played would have made an impact and possibly changing the outcome of the game!! But Grimoldby's only played one game in the tourney...but there resting him for the big game tomorrow right??? Thought so.

Simple

by LDA48 (Login LDA48)

mathematics. A team has 25 players signed but only 20 can dress for a game so you sit out 5. Those are the 5 chosen players to sit. Why would you not dress 20 players and selectively play them during the game???

Of course...

by gabbyspree (Login gabbyspree)

Of course dress a full squad why wouldn't you. I was giving a list of players that could of easily sat and would have been more opted to sit over Grimoldby. Kazarian or even Benesch for sure should have been on the bench in this "Nothing" game. You play to win, you don't ever take it easy or take a day off because your already into the semis. Judging by the emotions of last nights game I highly doubt that the Woodies were taking it easy cuz they were already in the semis! Any true player will tell you that you never take it easy. Regardless of any circumstance! Thats usually when injuries do occur! I totally commend the woodies coaching staff for playing those star players who I felt should have been watchin from the stands Bensch, Kazarian(to name a few). And kudos to those woodies players who gave it there all lastnight...There actions on the floor spoke a lot louder than what you read on here!

Presidents standings

by Uh-oh! (Login plaxer2003)

Looks like there is going to be the same problem in the Presidents as in the Founders.

A team with a losing record getting into the medal round over a team with a winning record in the opposite pool - one that probably beat them too!

It really is time to go to a full round robin - this year would have seen 6 games spread over 5 days Monday to Friday - Saturday 1 vs 2 for the gold and 3 vs 4 for Bronze.

Have at it boys

BTW the tie breaker is GF/(GF+GA) I would suggest that in the case of Tri City and Khanawake that it would be the games played against the common teams(ie the teams from Pool 1)

In this case
Tri City has scored 5 + 10 +2 = 17 and allowed 6 + 3 + 4=13 17/(17+13) = .567
Kahnawake has scored 8 + 9 + 8= 25 and allowed 12+12+11=35 25/(25+35)= .417

Now I am wondering if they might try to go with the record against the teams in the other division Tri-City went 1W and 2 L whereas Kahnawake went 0W and 3L.

Either way Tri City gets the nod as the second place team and would play the #1 team from Group 1.

Re: Presidents standings

by (Login turftoe17)

Check my post on format needs to change. A team with only 1 win (Tri City) advances while a team with 3 wins (Okotos) goes home? In fact Okotos also beat Tri-City. Hard to justify ...

some teams can pick up players.

by . (Login oletimelax)

all teams in the presidents cup can pick up a maximum of 3 players from any team within their own league specifically for the presidents cup. except of course the ontario and BC representatives.
