The boys have decided that they want pansies again this year, and lo and behold there are spring flowers in my front garden!
Thanks to my wonderful trees, I have a ton of leaves and sticks and stuff to move out of the garden patch in front of the house and there is one on the other side that is starting to sprout - get this - another peony bush!
So, I have to figure out what I want to plant there because anything else I plant in that garden patch will be behind that peony bush. I have cleaned the patch out since over the winter that patch was used as garbage storage before it was moved out to the curb.
Drama drama drama...lol
DH got me some garden soil to till into what we have, and I think I will take the boys statue shopping. We tend to like frogs here, so maybe a cool looking frog to stand guard in front of the garage...hmmm
So everyone is invited to share plans of what they want to plant...
We've been talking about planting something this year.

We need flowers/shrubs that the deer will leave alone, and are relatively low-maintenance. I don't really like working in the yard, but I'm so tired of the house looking like such a dump on the outside.
I'd like to plant some lilies (I know the deer like them, but I think we can find a way to protect them). I also have three gerbera daisy plants I want to try to plant, even though they aren't likely to return next year.
Anybody ever use one of those wildflower seed mixes? I have a spot that would be perfect for that, but the only other time I ever tried that (years ago, in another house) I had really lousy results. I'd love some hints for making that work.
Tori, you should post some pictures of your yard. I could use the inspiration!
when just sprinkling them in the ground. I think the only way they'd stand a chance would be to soak the seeds in water overnight, then plant them in egg cartons or something and let them sprout indoors, and then plant them outdoors. But that could be pretty labor intensive.
Eh, the mixes just depend on what you use, I suppose (m)

By the way, My goodness your girls look exactly like you!
Anyway, when I worked at a hardware store, they sold bags of this wildflower mix and it looked like (I kid you not) purple fluff, or cotton candy. It was bizarre stuff. You're supposed to spread the stuff out, water it, and BOOM instant flowers (well, in a couple of weeks anyway). I never tried it, but i heard that it worked very well.
If you haven't bought anything yet Lisa, that might be something to look into. Apparently, the purple stuff includes fertilizer?
I remember seeing an ad on tv years ago for some kind of dirt roll (kind of like sod, I guess) that had the seed already planted in it. You just put it down in your yard, water, and watch it grow. That's more my speed - I wonder if it still exists.
I'll let you know what happens. It wasn't my first choice for this particular area, but it was in a basket I won in a silent auction, so 1- it was free (meaning I already had it here), & 2- it was easy!
I have good luck w/ vinca & impatients here - those are easy & cheap. The list of what I do not have luck w/ is long, lol!
Good luck!

When we first moved here, there was a flower garden in the front of the house on one side. It was pretty the first spring, but every year the deer did a bigger and bigger number on it, and now there's nothing there but a handful of crocuses.
That's where I'd love to put some wildflowers - I'll be interested to hear how yours do!
They left the vinca alone last year, but ate the gerber daisies & impatients & hostas. So far, they haven't been back around since I put the new stuff in this year - I think they may be waiting til everything gets all nice & juicy, lol.
The wildflower seed is starting to sprout, not sure yet how they'll look.
I'll keep you posted.

I read on the website that Tori posted a while back that deer don't like gerbera daisies. I hope the deer around here don't like them at any rate. I still plan to plant them sooner or later
I'll be interested to hear how the wildflowers do!
