I wrote a little thing to look at the URL and determine whether or not you were looking at a forum page. If you are, it displays the RSS icon at the bottom. If you're not, then there's nothing to give to an RSS reader, and so it doesn't display the icon.
What I'd
really like to do is write one generic script to recognize
which forum you're reading and have it generate the code with the correct forum number already plugged-in. THe way I did it, I had to modify each footer directly and hard-code the forum number into it. I'm assuming it's possible to do this, but I'd have to spend some time reading language syntax documentation and such before I could figure it out.
I wish I could do that now, but the natives are restless - the little people need to get outside and play
