by

I just want to comfirm that there is no lab due this week. Only because I got a virus on Wenesday that wiped out everything that was in "My Documents". I know I can get everything off the server but im having internet connection issues (not sure if its my just my computer or our ISP).

"Ouch!" - at least you are in luck with COSC120. Nothing is due Friday, BUT...

by Anonymous

a two week lab means that I expect you to put in about 6 hours work, in this case searching the Web for more resources and classifying them as resources, references, indexes, and any other category that might suit you.

Tony, I looked at lab8, my graphics are on there through composer. I fixed lab8b, even though in the directions it says nothing about links for the mailing lists.

Stupid mistake

by Patty

Tony, I did a stupid thing, right as I was getting ready to hand in my test, I changed one of my answers #41, for some reason domain name kept coming to me but I had file directory, which after looking at my notes was right, I always second guess my self, I know I need to stop, but that's why that one is wrong, I shouldn't of changed it.

look for resources

by Patty

So basically we look for resources for our major, like web sites and then link them on our page, so who ever wants to they can open them up and see whats there? Would lesson plans be ak also? Or information about our major, like mine is early childhood.

You got it. They are YOUR resources; of course others can access them, but...

by Tony

they are there for you to use them - from anywhere in the world that you have Internet access. Therefore, you can put ANYTHING on your project pages, well anything that is relevant to your major. Things like pets, hobbies, friends, etc. should go on your home page or its subpages; your project pages should all relate to your major.

Web resources are Web pages in which you are interested....

by Tony

For your project they are Web pages that contain info on your major. Later, we will distinguish two subtypes of Web resources, "indexes" and "references".

Frustrations in Publishing (Frostburg Server)

by Rachel

I am having the worst problems with using the new Frostburg Server. I create, update, and save my web pages and everytime I think I had published them they never seem to show up when click on the link. I keep getting the message:

"Error 404: File not found"

It is getting annoying because I feel like even when I get the assignments done, they never show up. I have gone back and checked the file names, retyped stuff, and it seems like nothing works. Only once in a while, does a linked page ever actually show up on my site and when it does it seems like a miracle and not because of anything I have done.

Any ideas or suggestions on how I can get past this problem?

One thing for sure, the file name and your link to that file are NOT the same.

by Tony

The simple insurance for making a Web page function properly is to (1) make it work on your computer or floppy then (2) upload every file EXACTLY as they are on your computer. This means that all files have to be exactly is the same "relative" location, i.e. in the same folders. If you add a graphic to a Web page you must not only upload the updated Web page but the graphic file as well. My best tip is to "avoid typing" whenever possible, i.e. when linking always browse to the file and select it or "copy 'n paste" links. (Typos are the origin of most "file not found" errors.) If you continue to have problems, come to my office hours or during class period.

Question about Lab 6 turn in

by Steve F

Quick question, all we do for lab6 is do what it is required and then post it on our websites, correct?

Also I downloaded a great add-on for anyone using firefox, it's called FireFTP. It allows you to upload your web pages right through Firefox. I like it because its simple and you can easily go from the FireFTP tab to a tab with your web page to check if anything is out of place right after it is finished.

Yes, all you are required to do (in any lab) is what is specified in the instructions...

by Tony

Thanks for tip on FireFTP. You can use any FTP client, but I want everyone to understand that they are using a different client-server protocol, i.e. using a browser might "cloud" the idea that HTTP and FTP are two distinct services.

For Megan

by Patty

Don't feel bad, I've been having problems with that web page also, I have part of my link up my personal web page, but it won't let me back on to it to try to fix my link, it keeps denying my password, so I only have half of it done. Are we having fun yet!!!

Tony- if you would like to meet with me and tryto figure out what the problem is I would really appreciate it, also I really hope I do not get a late penalty on this due to the fact that I havent hard back from the webpage manager. by Tammy

Tony,
Do we still need to turn in the rest of Lab 5 on Monday or can we wait until Tuesday when we meet? I also have made the corrections to my Lab 4.
Thanks,

Always turn in labs on time. Incompletes are better than late submissions.

by Tony

Incompletes show you made the effort, and, consequently, fulfilled your Promise to meet my minimum expectations; late submissions don't tell me anything other than you did not meet your deadline.

meet after break

Tony do you think it would be a good idea for our class to meet after break( or for just the ones who need and want help), since there are a couple of us still having problems with this lab 5??

Of course, I am available during any class period, but attendance is not required except..

by Tony

for assessments and project presentations. I will not present any new material, so those who do not attend will not miss anything.
