Little Confused

by Patty

Tony,(or whoever knows the answer)
I'm a little confussed about lab 4. I started to make my web page, but for number 1 & 2 of that section, I'm not sure what it is I'm supposed to do, like adding FSU site onto it, and adding my e-mail address onto it. It doesn't show where to do that.

I don't see how I can be more explicit. I give exact details of what to do.

by Tony

To see what an e-mail link looks like, place your cursor over the "E-mail Tony" link under "FEEDBACK" on the NAVIGATION PANEL. If you can't figure it out, see me during class period in Pulen tomorrow.

Diskettes

by Rachel

Is there any way in the future that we can turn in assignments on CD's? My computer does not have a floppy disk drive reader and found it was inconvenient to have to use campus computers when I did the bulk of the work on my personal computer.

Yes, but not CDs. Use a CD-RW or DVD, something that I can save files on.

by Tony

Actually, from Lab 5 on, you will publish your files on a Web server, so this issue will be irrelevant.

Part C of LAB III

by

I think I have parts one and two done, but I'm not for sure about Part C. I'm not for sure how to create a "link" containing two other documents into another.
Hopefully I can get the homework to your mailbox this afternoon, but considering I'm having some difficulties it might be later on during this Friday of March 2. I'd just like the instruction, not really having someone to do this COSC 120 homework for me. I spent from 11 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. last night, and I think I've made progress here.

Part A - Gif Question

by Rachel

In Part A, in Part 2 it says that a GIF File cannot be copied. But on my computer I was able to copy it and save to my hard drive. Should I submit that copy or go ahead and reproduce in a new document what it says? It seems like that would be a waste of time, seeing as though the GIF can indeed be copied?

You missunderstood the intent of the sentence. ...

by Tony

You can copy a GIF, but you couldn't edit the words in it, so you must copy the text of the HTML document on FOLDOC, edit the words, and submit your modified copy to me.

I presented the example as a GIF because, had I left it as in HTML, you could "cheat" by coping my example - I wouldn't be able to detect that. So I presented the text as a picture (a GIF file). The difference is copying a GIF and copying text in HTML.

Confussion

by Patty

Tony, I'm a little confused on Part B of lab 3, do we copy what you have down already?? You really can't tell what is italicized or not. Sorry to bother you.

No, do not copy anything of mine. Copy the definition verbatim, from FOLDOC....

by Tony

The italics are in the 4th paragraph (beginning with "Other common...") and 7th paragraph ("Latest extension...") of the example.

If this doesn't help, come to Pullen 110 tomorrow at 12:00 or 1:00 when I am giving assessments in my COSC100 course. I will be free from about 10 after the hour to 30 past, while students are taking the assessment.

Don't think I can improve on my instructions, but...

by Anonymous

To copy an image into an HTML document, you have to:

1. Save the image (a GIF, JPEG, PNG, etc. file) on your system, e.g. hard drive.

2. Insert the image into your document. To do this, in Netscape Composer, (1) place your cursor where you want the image to appear, (2) click the "Image" button on Composer, (3) on the pop-up "Image Properties" dialog box, click the "Choose file..." button, (4) browse to where you saved the image (in step 1), (5) and click the OK button. (You you will have to fill in other stuff on the dialog box, but it is irrelevant.)

The image should appear in your document. Of course, if you move your document or save it at another location, you will need to do the same with the image; they are separate files.

If this doesn't help, come to Pullen 110 tomorrow at 12:00 or 1:00 when I am giving assessments in my COSC100 course. I will be free from about 10 after the hour to 30 past, while students are taking the assessment.

Copying and pasteing icons

Tony,
I am having trouble trying to copy and paste the CHOOSE and F.S.U. icons for Lab 3 PART A. 2.B.e. and C. Everytime that I copy and paste the picture, it is pasteing the COSC 120 and F.S.U. links to my document. I am not sure why this keeps happening.

I am not sure from you "symptoms", but if you right click and choose "save image as" you will get a copy on your computer that you can use in your documents. If this doesn't help, see me during class time.

Netmeeting

by Steve F

Just read the previous posts about Netmeeting, after completing the LAB. But just thought id add this anyway. Even if you wanted to download Netmeeting and install it is impossible. It will only install on the following:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 2000 Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows 95; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT

XP isn't one of them, which is on all computers between 2002-end of 2006

Confused, Netmeeting is already on all Windows versions, including XP.

by Tony

Read about using NetMeeting with XP in the Checklists,2.4.1.1.1. and on the Current Announcements, Introduction and Timeless Announcements, item 6.1.1. NetMeeting works; it is just blocked by FSU's network security. It is also complicated to use if you have a router on your computer, which is now rather common. (You have to configure your router to allow NetMeeting transmissions.) Consequently, I will not use NetMeeting now, but I will demonstrate it in class someday, probably after ans assessment. We can use it for project presentations if we are all in the same LAN, but that really misses the utility of that great program. I'm sad to say this; it's the first time in probably 10 years that I've had to abandon NetMeeting, but I guess it is "progress" - "BACKWARDS"!!! Anyway, until further notice, don't worry about NetMeeting. If you manage to get it to work, good for you.

Net Meeting

by Rachel

Quick question, if I don't have the computer cababilites to do netmeeting via my computer (sound card and updated microphone) than what should I do? I asked my mom about her use of Netmeeting and she only uses it for meetings to present slides and not to use as a commuincator between people? Will our presentations require verbal commuincation, if so how should I go about it?

In Lab 2, Part E, item 1 (or 1.A) there is no "account number" mentioned. If you mean item 1.B.b, that is the account for the chat service you are using. Actually it's not a big deal; I don't really have to have your chat account details.

by Tony

you are having trouble. No, since the preassessments and proficiency evaluations are all self checking, there is no need to submit anything to me. You must be reading some old instructions that I haven't updated. I've removed one oversite on the preassessment hub, but if I missed anything that says you should turn in preassessments or proficiency evaluations, let me know. Tell me exactly where they are and I will update those documents. Thank for letting me know of these oversights.
