FTP websites...

There are no FTP websites I can find related to business. I looked in over 300 results for google and they were all websites. Any suggestions?

Just report your findings. Don't waste your time after you have the basic idea.

by Tony

FTP sites, compared to Web sites, are not very useful in business. Anyway, the point of the lab is simply to learn about FTP.

Experiment! The "art" of using Google, or any search engine, is figuring out how to...

by Tony

narrow your search. Try "FTP" with whatever your major is, or "FTP servers" plus your major. Note that there are fewer and fewer FTP sites now (superceeded by Web sites) so don't worry if you don't find many. Just get the idea.

can't publish - website unavailable

by

I have been trying to publish for the last two hours and keep getting a "server is unavailable" error. Is it something I am doing wrong - this is really frustrating....... I can publish to the netscape server where I placed the other pages

You are not publishing to "the netscape server"; you publish on goliath.

by Tony

You have an account on goliath. All publishing questions should be sent to the golliath administrator, by clicking on the Contact Button. (I have nothing to do with the goliath server; it is maintained by the computer club.) I have not heard of an error "server is unavailable" error, but it could be that you Internet connection is down. Be sure to explain EXACTLY what your difficulties are.

I don't see why you would have problems with publishing Netscape (your "client" not "server"); I have not had reports of other's difficulties. Anyway, it is not drastic if you can't publish using Netscape because you will learn to use an FTP client (Core FTP) in Lab 6.

My computer died this week and I have taken it to be fixed. I am using a friend's computer to send this and check my mail. I am hoping to get my computer back next Monday or Tuesday.

I don't know how to do reworks since I am off site

by

I am not sure how to do the reworks since I am off-site. You did send me an email with the assement #s I missed - but I don't have a copy of the exam so I don't know the questions. Is there anyway to make up some of the points. I really need this class to graduate in the spring. Mike

You should have kept your exam, like I instructed.

by Tony

All I got was a fax of your exam. Where is your original? I guess I could fax a copy to you if you send me an e-mail with a fax address. However, you really need your original with YOUR ANSWERS so you can do the rework from it. Did you leave it with CCBC? I explained to you as well as Trish that you were supposed to keep a copy of the assessment from which to do the rework.

Anyway, there are no late penalties on assessment reworks, so just do it as soon as possible. On all future assessments, be sure to keep your original.

I don't recall you telling me to keep a copy of the exam and the proctor did not tell me to take it with me. In fact, I handed it back with the answer sheet. I will check with the proctor but I don't think she saved the copy. Thanks - Mike

If you have graphics, you must upload the image file as well as the HTML file.

by Tony

This will be easier in Lab 6 where you will learn to use an FTP client, Core FTP.

The basic idea is simple. An HTML file contains only the text with its formatting; all associated graphics, music, video, etc. are in separate files which have to uploaded along with the HTML file that has tags that link to them. It is important that the relationships between your HTML document and multimedia files, on your Web server, be EXACTLY the same as your originals (on the computer where you created them). It is simplest to make sure everything works on your originals and then upload everything exactly as is. See me after break if you still have troubles.

You have an account, so you must not be typing in your user or password incorrectly.

Your user name is "ndurst0", but (of course) I don't know your password. Just type in EXACTLY what you were given when you signed up on Goliath.

I do not understand. What is "It" and what is "site name".

by Tony

You must be specific and clear when posting on the forum. I assume you are talking about Lab 5. Also, I guess you mean Goliath as your site. If you have had a Goliath account set up, your name will appear on the list of students with Goliath accounts. (If it is not there, you are in TROUBLE! Everyone should have Goliath accounts by now; that was in the getting started section of the checklists - and I emphasized it in class.)

If you are Samrawit, you have an account and a home page, so I don't see any trouble.

"IF" you have an account, either your user name or password are incorrect, or both.

by Tony

You can check your user name by simply going to http://goliath.frostburg.edu/, clicking the "Students" tab (at the top). Then select "Search and Display All Students" from the drop down menu at the right. When you click the Submit button all student accounts will appear. If an account has been created for you, your name and URL (in green) will appear; your user name appears after the "/".

If you don't see your name, you have no account. In any case, you have to contact the administrator to explain your problem. Do that by clicking on the "Contact" tab at the top.

I saw you on NetMeeting today. I tried chat, but you didn't respond....

by Tony

Did you open the chat window, i.e. click the button that looks like a "text baloon", like you see in comic strips? You have to open that in order to see my messages. If you didn't, try again tomorrow, during office hours. It's important to get NetMeeting working, so maybe another office visit would help.

Incidently, NetMeeting is already built into Windows XP. This is discussed, in the Study Checklists, in item 4.1.1.1 under "2. Studying the Course"

Anyway, did you get registered for the class?

It would be better to get ahead and create your Web site on the FSU student server, ...

by Tony

Goliath. You should have already gotten your account (as it says in the first of the checklists) on Goliath, so do Lab 5 which is about creating that Web site.

I don't see why you would have "trouble sending" labs; just mail them!

I said "mail" them, NOT "e-mail" them.

by Tony

I really don't understand when you say the "attachment doesn't open". That doesn't make any sense. When you "send" an e-mail, attachments don't "open". They only "open" on the receiver end. In any case, sending attachments is very straightforward, but it depends on the e-mail client you are using.

Yes, you can develop your Web site with any HTML authoring tool, but...

by Tony

(1) I won't be able to help you much, with the details, of a tool with which I am inexperienced (such as Publisher) and (2) you should be able to answer "basic" questions about Composer, like those on preassessments and proficiency evaluations.

by James Hamu

just a question, when it says create a copy of the simple HTML document A SIMPLE HTML DOCUMENT EXAMPLE, is the lab itself the simple example or does it link to somewhere.

plus i have had troubles reading the scheduale and think everything is due a week later than what it really is.

It says create a copy of the document the link accesses! Click on the link and reporduce

by Tony

the A SIMPLE HTML DOCUMENT EXAMPLE, with the exceptions noted in the instructions. What could be more explicit? The schedule is very simple; the middle column says when you begin "doing" the lab; the right column says, very explicitly, when the lab is due.

WOW! You are correct. As always, "adapt and overcome"; you followed the instructions...

by Tony

so just say what happened. Finding a mirror site for FOLDOC (via Google or some other means) is even better. Something must be wrong with the server at Imperial College. You can still answer the question, by looking at the URL

("wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk")

even though you can't access the site. However, if you report the location of a mirror site the answer will be different; I will not know that unless you give the URL.

Since Imperial College and it's FOLDOC are such major players, I'd expect it to be back up soon. I'm amazed it has been down as long as you say.
