Hockey in the GTHL has become pretty darn expensive. On average its likely going to cost a family about $3,000 after tax dollars a year per player to lace up in the GTHL. The $3,000 comes from a combination of team costs and gate entry tickets. So if a household income is 50K to 60K a year thats a months salary just for someone to play hockey. Not much choice sometimes between grocery's and mortgage vs skates.
Two year cards and better run organizations can play a part, but if the pool of kids is decreasing because they simply can't afford the cost to play you begin to see the root cause of why teams are folding at a greater rate than before. Check out the organizations (Willowdale, Ted Reeve, Markham, Leaside that routinely put in the maximum 16 entries for both the A and AA levels. Thats now a rareity. Some aren't able to field 8 teams in a single level.
The game you grew up with isn't cheap anymore. At least in the GTHL it isn't.
