Teams in the 3 to 6 or 7 position in the standings. The top 2 or 3 teams don't have much to replace or upgrade, so the few spots that are open are usually filled before try-outs even start. The 3 to 7 teams are looking to make the jump and beat those top teams, so they will have more open spots.
In the East, Penguins and West Hill will be full before the first try out. Leaside runs a pretty solid program and will not likely have many spots. Knights have a few holes to fill. Ted Reeve is not having a team next year. Islanders had some decent talent, but not enough depth. Aeros improved a lot, but have really far to go in one off-season to be a contender. Hillcrest and Ice Raiders are pretty much in the same boat.
On the West side - Rangers and Royals were solid and are only competing with each other to load up. Eagles seemed short benched most of the year and are probably looking for more depth. The Panthers were good, but need a few pieces to make a serious run. Avalanche have taken a few steps backwards, but have a good core. Duffield showed lots of potential in second half of season and could be the surprise team in the West next year. Huskies, West Mall, Sharks, Amesbury are going to struggle to compete with the tops teams. |
