Grandma Cat taking over- help

I have several barn cats for keeping away the mice in my barn, and Grandma Cat, who is 3 years old, is trying to take over Mother cats first litter. Grandma Cat just had one kitten the last time, and it was about 2 and a half months ago.
Now that Mother Cat just had her first litter early this morning, when I went to check on them this afternoon, Grandma cat was in the nest, "nursing" the kittens. Mother cat looked like she wanted to be doing it, but didnt dare interfere with Grandma cat.
Is this safe? Would Grandma cat still have enough milk to care for them? What can I do to ensure the kittens survival? What if now that Grandma Cats trying to take over, Mother Cat wont care for the kittens?
